Does anyone know that guru gal that does coaching on business acquisition? I know there is a thread here about her but I cannot find it, nor can I recall her name.

Are you thinking of Codie Sanchez?

Edit: Sorry, I just realized how far back this was in the thread.

Since there was a few posts on health and living long I want to share something interesting.
Both my parents are Seventh Day Adventists and are in crazy good shape in their 60s.

My dad used to drink hard but the diet has reversed a lot of his party days over the last 20 years.
When he is around people the same age as himself he looks 20 years younger.

View attachment 44542

I have read before that other than genetics, or living in certain areas, that their diet is the next best thing for living a long and healthy live.

The basic diet is:
- Balance and moderation
- Not too much of anything
- Pure water, fresh air, and sunlight
- Exercise
- Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and mind-altering substances
- A well-balanced vegetarian diet

Its pretty interesting to read up on if you are looking into a diet to have really good health as you get older.

It's not really the diet.

Ikaria, a greek island that's also a Blue Zone, boasts a much higher life expectancy than other nearby greek islands.

Of course, they breathe the same air and eat the same foods, so what gives?

After researching Blue Zones extensively, I've come to the conclusion it's the social factor. These places have VERY tight-knit communities where everyone knows each other and they tend to gather around in huge groups outside for lunch AND dinner, with BBQ, cards, wine, and dancing almost every single night (if not EVERY night).

Basically, they make almost every meal a social event. That in itself is huge for stress relief, which means these people have much lower inflammation levels than someone living in the hustle and bustle of a metropolis. And people tend to be really, really kind to each other rather than flex their insecurities with Ferraris, Gucci, and similarly pathological "look at me!" attitudes. Better mental health = better physical health.

Additionally, the islands and towns in the Blue Zones tend to have a rather uneven terrain and fewer roads, which means people generally walk much more - and with greater exertion - than someone living in a heavily urbanized environment where they constantly sit on their a$$ all day whether that's at work, in the car, or at home.

Thus, they exercise more, weigh less, and again, have lower inflammation levels owing to their physical activity. It's fair to conclude that humans really weren't meant to stay in one place much. One's circulation, GI health, lymphatic system, and pretty much all of your F*cking organs need to be regularly revved up to work the way they should.

But what about the other islands we mentioned where people also enjoy breathing clean air and follow a Mediterranean diet?

Well, those islands are much more urbanized and busy. So the social aspect, the tight-knit communities, and the daily festivities are barely - if at all -present:

"Despite her consummately Ikarian air, Parikos was actually born in Detroit to an American father and an Ikarian mother. She had attended high school, worked as a real estate agent and married in the United States. After she and her husband had their first child, she felt a “genetic craving” for Ikaria. “I was not unhappy in America,” she said. “We had good friends, we went out to dinner on the weekends, I drove a Chevrolet. But I was always in a hurry.”

When she and her family moved to Ikaria and opened the guesthouse, everything changed. She stopped shopping for most groceries, instead planting a huge garden that provided most of their fruits and vegetables. She lost weight without trying to. I asked her if she thought her simple diet was going to make her family live longer. “Yes,” she said. “But we don’t think about it that way. It’s bigger than that.”

Although unemployment is high — perhaps as high as 40 percent — most everyone has access to a family garden and livestock, Parikos told me. People who work might have several jobs. Someone involved in tourism, for example, might also be a painter or an electrician or have a store. “People are fine here because we are very self-sufficient,” she said. “We may not have money for luxuries, but we will have food on the table and still have fun with family and friends. We may not be in a hurry to get work done during the day, so we work into the night. At the end of the day, we don’t go home to sit on the couch.”

On a serious note, this is horrible.

@MJ DeMarco how about a new thread with the posts about living a long, healthy life, like @Fox's post about his parents and @Simon Angel's post on blue zones? Could be an interesting discussion. I know there's a thread on longevity but that one is more about age-delaying technology. This thread could be about more general findings on how to live a long, happy life.

In most cases, shorter. Entrepreneurs tend to give way too many F*cks and hold themselves to much higher standards than the average person. This comes at a price.

So sad when I see this imagery of two people sitting behind a desk with dour, concerned expressions on their faces, men, women, it doesn't matter...

I know immediately that I'll be either lied to, or be greased for an agenda.

Immediate tune out.

Does this fall under "trust the experts"?

I see it as longer.

Look at all the 90 year old dudes who still work hard in their business every day. They keep their minds active and enjoy what they do, and they live a long and productive life.

Now look at all the 70 year old's past retirement on the edge of death who have nothing to do and nothing to live for. Once their work ends they literally don't know what to do with their lives.

Interesting that so many users on here got COVID around the same time lol.

I tested positive two days ago. I'm not vaxinated. Only prevalent symptom on day 1 was body aches and your regular slight fever/coughing. Day 3 now and I just have a dry cough which I had even before I tested positive.

In most cases, shorter. Entrepreneurs tend to give way too many F*cks and hold themselves to much higher standards than the average person. This comes at a price.

I sometimes think I’d have less stress if I just had a job. I don’t live a “balanced” life in any way. In that way I agree with you.

On the other hand, I remember my days of working for a company and hating it. Looking back, I was stressed anyway, just for different reasons.

People who have solo businesses and financial independence (thinking of @MTF as example) seem to complain about lack of meaning in life. Scaling down has no appeal to me, I know I’ll be miserable if I don’t scale up (staying same isn’t an option either).

@Kak says it’s a calling. Maybe it is, because even in the worst moments, I cannot imagine doing other things. Being in charge of my own decisions and being held accountable for each one with unbiased (typically financial) rewards is addictive. It’s a bit like a rollercoaster. Up and down we go, from euphoria of “I cannot believe how much money I’ll make on this” to depression of “I cannot believe this is falling apart“. That’s real stress that can shorten life if we believe that stress shortens life.

But does it? Giving a shit forces us to study, experiment, develop networks and social connections. I sometimes feel that by being in business for myself, I’ve already lived longer than my age. Let me re-phrase that, my experience of time is such that I’ve had 10x more “life” than when I just had a “job”.

Was on the train to Leeds (UK) from Huddersfield a couple of days ago. Train strikes meant trains were stopping earlier than normal, so the driver was reminding everyone of this fact, adding that if the last train was missed, the ONLY (yes, he emphasised this) way you could get back to Huddersfield was bus or taxi, otherwise you will NOT be able to get back, according to him.

I walked back. Not to save money, as that would have meant I valued my time at £6 an hour! It was only 14 miles, and I love walking, plus doing Kilimanjaro in September so I took it as an opportunity to contribute to my training.

Just amused me though, and a reflection of our society in my opinion, that the concept of walking back wasn’t even thrown into the mix.

Most people don't even walk 14 miles in a month, unless you count walking around the supermarket.

You had it quite easy then. Almost 3 weeks since my first symptoms and I'm still not feeling that great. It's funny because out of the 4 people in my family who got it at the same time (my 60+ parents and my girlfriend), I'm dealing with it the longest and had the worst experience, yet I take most care of my health and fitness.

That's a tough break but if you weren't taking such good care of yourself, it would've probably been even worse.

It’s not a popular idea, but a large part of health is just genetics. There are people who drink 2 bottles of whisky a day, smoke 2 packs of cigarettes, eat all sorts of crap and rarely get ill and live into their 90s.

On the other hand, there are people who drink a glass of wine and their heart rate goes through the roof.

There is little science here. All we have are statistics, which show that things like cigarettes are harmful for a certain percentage of people. From there people just extrapolate and say don’t smoke.

Warren Buffett eats red meat (steak) every day and ice cream and all sorts of harmful stuff. Doesn’t look like he’s very active. Look at him going strong at 90+…

Rum, sex and smoking… Cubans say lots of sex and tobacco is why they live longer

I really think the option to just Google things has made it worse for young people.

I can feel it myself. Don't need to remember anything either.

Don't know how to fix a flat tire on my bike? I'll Google it.

Don't know how to make a specific dish? Google.

Can't remember how I did something last time? I'll watch the YouTube video again.

My dad can remember birthdays for my whole family, world cup soccer winners, Olympic host cities for decades and decades and even zip codes for almost the entire country. I can't remember shit I learned yesterday. Why should I? I can just Google it.

Dominos Pizza outsources their phone calls to a foreign call center now. Holy shit I will never listen to my family try to order a pizza for 20 minutes again.

Bad bad bad value skew. Funny I looked it up and saw some reddit posts on it, employees love it (ignoring phone calls in store) and the customers hate it. Read this.

I guess the key is being able to solve issues and do them by searching for them. Give one of these kids a problem and tell them to solve it, I bet they won't even be able to look it up and do the actions.

My spelling is also shot to crap, and I can barely write. I started writing stuff down more often recently (pen and paper) and I really enjoy it.

Question: do you think being an entrepreneur leads to a longer or shorter life?

Might be a wash, at least for me. Most of the last 20 years of my life have been low stress. But I've also been sitting at a desk an awfully long time. A one hour workout doesn't cancel out 8 hours of sitting, kinda like, one plate of kale doesn't cancel out the 20 donuts you ate earlier.

In fact, I just bought a standing desk and a walking treadmill. Hoping its not too late for me.

Nothing says, "our profitability is more important than your satisfaction" than outsourcing fundamental aspects of your business.

You have some stunning hikes nearby. Maybe time for a new hobby? Pretty sure that 1-2 multi-hour hikes a week would cancel out a lot of that sitting.

Sitting at a desk for 8 hours is definitely not the way our bodies need to behave for health. The curse of research and writing… or an office job!

The question is, if you weren’t an entrepreneur, how would life compare? Longer or shorter against what? Right? Meaning, if you had a job that required 8 hrs of desk sitting time… plus the typical stress (financial or otherwise).

In fact, I just bought a standing desk and a walking treadmill. Hoping its not too late for me.

Most of our office staff have standing desks. Yet few use the standing feature more than 5% of the day…

I’m lucky in that I don’t sit that long. My day is typically full of meetings that break up the sitting part. Edit: In our business, travel is also typical. Last visit to the island was a beautiful flight on a float plane. Views were just stunning
