If we do everything that we are taught by the latest youtube videos, our morning routine would take about 4 hours and have us starting work at 11am... meditation, exercise, wim hof, sauna, cold shower, journal, read, affirmations, visualizations etc etc.

I'm not saying these things don't have value, of course they do. I just think they might offer an unrealistic insight into the day of an actual 'coffee and diesel' entrepreneur (non social media/online guru guy). The most successful guys I know wake up, grab a coffee, and get straight to their work desk.

What works for you?

Not exactly crushing it in business yet, but taking action to transition out of my time-for-money tuition business into C.E.N.T.S.

My most productive days actually begin the night before. I tend to experience clarity before sleeping re: what I want to do the next day, so I write down 2-8 bullet points. They might be task-specific 'todos', but they could also be things to contemplate, a principle to keep in mind, anything that directly or indirectly moves me toward my goals, or seems like a worthwhile experiment to run. (I've found the value of an attitude of experimentation to be vital, because it means I don't have to know that what I'm doing is right ahead of time.)

I'll typically take just one caffeinated drink and then go in one of two directions—
1. take in inspiration if I'm feeling less motivated (this morning was MJ YouTube vids while I did the dishes);
2. grab the laptop and get right to it.

I don't eat breakfast, so I'll tend to go solidly from 6/7/8 AM to 1/2/3pm, when I'll make a green smoothie. What happens after that varies. When I'm excited by the work, I might go until 8 PM. When I'm not, I'm generally accepting that 5 hours of focused work is enough, practicing 'winner effect' on that, and then seeing if I can aim for 5 hours 10 minutes next time.

I wake up usually by 2 am, stretch, drink a glass of water, start coffee. Then I go outside in the dark and walk a couple of miles to toss around whatever thoughts come to mind. When I get back I start on any client work for the next hour or two. Exercise around 6 am. After that, I do whatever for the rest of the day. Lately, it's practice piano.

I leave my phone in another room so I can't go on it when I wake up.

I get out of bed, cold shower, and do my daily morning journal which is simply, how do you feel, what are you grateful for, what do you get to do today.

Then I get started on work or hit the gym.

I also go outside and eat my breakfast in the sun to get some morning sun on me early in the day.

I pour myself a glass of 22-hour cold brew (no special recipe, I just finish the jug after 2 hours and start the next batch) and boot up Wordle and Quordle. Get that mind working with some fun times. Then it's off to the races, whatever fun thing I have cooked up. Right now it's getting jiggy in Active Campaign, cooking up a shitload of automation sequences.

Wake up at whatever time I feel rested enough to function at a high level (I don't use alarms for this, trust the body).

High quality coffee (brewed in a moka pot or aeropress).

Read over critical to-do list from previous night (3 big tasks per day). Read over critical "people to call" list for the day. (Note two different lists, stuff I need to do, and stuff I need to communicate). (60 seconds max)

Read over short / medium / long term goals, and one pager of quotes or notes that I have. (60 seconds max).

Start work.

Take short walks to clear head and increase productivity as needed. (10 min each)

Afternoon swim.

I deliberately created a life where I get a slow start to every day, with zero pressure to be anywhere at any particular time. Which means, since I'm a systems freak, and a creature of habit:

- wake up at 6
- take the dog out, make a nice cup of coffee, feed the cat, go back to bed with the coffee
- read/have sex/lounge/stare at the sky for some time
- eat breakfast
- take the dog to the dog park
- start work, every day, without fail, between 9 and 9:20 am.

Not on purpose. That last bit is just how it worked out. Sheesh. But it's nice. I absolutely hate being hustled, even by me, and I will just come to a complete stop if someone tries it. But if I take care of my lazy self first, then I'm good to go.

This is amazing!
Most people would get sick if they woke up in the middle of the night, when the body expects deep rest.
If it works for @Lex DeVille , more power to him.

If we do everything that we are taught by the latest youtube videos, our morning routine would take about 4 hours and have us starting work at 11am... meditation, exercise, wim hof, sauna, cold shower, journal, read, affirmations, visualizations etc etc.
I've started doing cardio first thing in the morning.
I'm not sure if it will directly affect my productivity right after it, but I am doing it because it's hard and it builds my character. I start the day with pain and suffering. (@MTF thanks for the inspiration)

Other than that, my most productive morning routine would be:
  • The day before: write a clear task list to do the next morning.
  • Wake up fresh after an amazing sleep.
  • Go straight to the computer.
  • Work.
  • Drop coffee after 1 hour - it's not a good idea to drink it right after waking up.

The purpose of those "inspirational" Youtube videos is to get clicks, views and ad revenue. And they are telling exactly what people want to hear: the magic pill of the magical morning routine that will magically solve all your problems easily.

There is no such thing.
You just get up, and work.

So true, from listening to these gurus you'd think the "key" to success was just getting up at 5am and aimlessly rattling off a list of "high performance habits". Of course there's value in having a routine and habits that prepare you best for the day ahead, but it only matters if you focus on the real work afterwards and put the feel good of your morning routine to actual work!

I do normally wake up early (5 - 6am, late in @Lex DeVille world ;)) but that's just because it feels natural to my body clock, I've always been an early riser long before "get up at 5am" became a thing! After that it's just some water, then coffee, then a short 20 minute run/weights session to wake me up properly, followed by shower and then work!

The one thing that I find most important to me is the morning exercise - when I do this at least 6 days a week I find my number of bad days is a low percentage, if I don't exercise my percentage of bad days rises dramatically! I find it truly amazing the impact that just 20 minutes of exercise has on my day.

I don't wake up so early for the sake of *the hustle.* I wake up this early because I'm a vampire.

But seriously... if I don't wake up so early, I won't have enough time to write or go for a walk before my daughter wakes up. Once she's awake, it's hard to concentrate on writing. Plus, I don't like to go for a walk in the daylight because... vampire.

Exactly, and the real danger of this advice is that it's half true:
Those habits are exceptionally useful and can help you a lot in the long run, but they are more like "support" habits, and not the core actions that will result in success.

The best approach would be something like focusing 80% on the actual work that will get you results, and 20% on those habits after the work is done, in order to take care of your mental wellbeing and improve your life over time.

Interesting, how can you recover from your training?
I am currently running every morning and I do get overlapping soreness and it interferes with my main weight lifting session which is later in the day.

Starting from tomorrow, I will do one day running - one day skipping rope, to try to use different movement patterns and different muscles in the legs.

I recover just by some light stretching after the run and maybe some later in the day too. Plus to be honest, I don't find much recovery is needed anyway as it's such a short session and I'm not running at a pace that has me feeling sick or anything, just getting a sweat on and slightly out of breath kind of thing. Likewise if I'm doing weights, I do them primarily for maintaining muscle mass (and for a change from running!) rather than trying to build muscle.

Interesting reading this, especially your 2:00 AM routine Lex.

I know routine are kind of like religions to people, so to those there own.

But even then, I’m now wondering how many hours do YOU ALL usually need to function properly? Just for fun. Thought it’d be pretty interesting to see the variety of answers to this.

I usually “think” I need 7-8 hours of sleep, but recently I’ve been functioning pretty well with less. At the time writing this I had about 6 1/2 hours the night before, feeling great, smiling a ton, and getting stuff done.

I usually rise at 4am, stretch, and chug down a liter of Highland spring water.

Once every cell in my body is replenished, I plunge into a cold shower and purge the little b*tch out of me. This is followed by 20 minutes of deep meditation and 10 minutes of chest-beating affirmations.

You'd think after all this priming I'd be ready to lay the next bricks of my empire.

Wrong!

Before I can let my fingertips wreak havoc on the world, I must first brew my specially-farmed, organic Columbian coffee.

Milk? Don't be silly.

A shot of vanilla? Now you're insulting me.

Only once my black coffee is at hand do I then go forth and conquer the day.

Then I woke up...

Rhode Island for now.
Wake up and work.

That's it.

I usually rise at 4am. I guess I drink some water, then work.

I don't have a morning routine.
Don't want one.

Don't want to meditate.
Don't want to reflect.

For me, there is limited productive time in a day.
I don't want to waste it.
So, I just do the work.

I write my list the night before, wake up and execute.
By 2/3pm, I'm tired and live my life. Exercise, etc.

--
I'm impressed with how much money is made on telling people how to be productive.
And how much time unproductive people waste trying to be productive.

What did Yoda say? 'Do or do not, there is no try'?
Just do the work.

Just work.

In my opinion - everything else is noise.

I love that @Lex DeVille posted his bed time. He's one of the few to actually complete the open loop of the rest of the story.

Because everyone will tell you they wake up at 4:30am, etc etc etc and everyone just gushes like it's some amazing super power.. but what most people skip out on is when they go to bed.

As long as you get in your 7-8 hours of sleep ( 6 for some people ), it's not anything amazing people.

You have 24 hours in a day. Everyone does. Don't let the rest of the world define how you should carve up that 24 hours.

If you wanna get up at 4am, then go to bed at 9pm.

Lol I don’t go to sleep before I do wordle and quordle. So just after midnight I go to sleep. Wake up around 9am, wake up, read emails, answer easy ones on the phone and then read this website in bed and am reading this thread at 9:12am. Then get up and answer longer emails on desktop.

My best productivity is when I'd wake up early, make coffee, and either immediately leave for the library or start doing focusmate blocks (focusmate.com). At the start of the work sprint, I'll set my goals for the day, and just gradually work through them.

The other thing that helped was MAKING A PATH.
I have ADHD so if it something seems difficult or uncertain I just won't do it. Doesn't matter if it could make me 8,000$, I would just procrastinate or watch youtube.
Setting goals then breaking them down into small actions or bite-sized micro-steps REALLY helped because everytime I could cross out an item or check it off, I would get that rewarding feeling of accomplishment and be carried on into the next task.

What works for you?
I think the point here is to establish a (small) routine that works for you to get your mind right in the AM.

Whether it be a podcast + walk, gym sesh, or meditation etc -- think we all have a go-to for what gets us going in the AM. Plus it helps you get into good habits (which you need for building a business), getting out of bed, and culminating a calm focused mind prior to starting the day. Obviously this is different for all but mine for many many years has been fairly consistent

Rise @ 6 AM with coffee / light reading
Some Version of Workout / Stretching @ 7 AM
Large Breakfast / Shower / Cleanup @ 8 AM
WORK @ 9 AM

I am very particular about getting all of these done before starting my day, if something is off it will typically alter my mental state for the entire day so I am really adamant on not skipping coffee / workout / shower or breakfast. I tend to stick to this schedule almost daily whether its weekend or work day.

Repeat 10x my affirmation for the future (subconscious programming).
Take an English course on Duolinguo: 5min max.
Do my routine to maintain good posture: 2min.
Visualize: 30s.
3 cardiac coherence session during the day: 15 min in total.
A sports session / swimming pool: 30m - 1h30.
At the end of the day, fill in the gratitude journal: 1min.

Well, that's a lot but I like doing all that to maintain myself both physically and mentally, and to have a good state of mind of course.
EDIT : + read before go sleep (5m to 45m max, when I'm asleep )
+ Re read a collection of book resume I've read on the past. (5-10m)

My morning awakening depends on the time I go to bed at night. Generally I wake up at 5 or 6 a.m. The duration of my sleep varies between 4 and 7 hours per hour, including the small naps that I take during the day. . my morning activities are: mediation, reading, stretching and working on my daily goals. that I have done the last night .

Alarm goes off. Girlfriend gets out of bed and makes me coffee. She comes back upstairs and climbs back into bed to wake me up. We go downstairs and I immediately start working on my business.

I do some scheduling, deal with growing the business, and handle any top level admin work.

She gets to work too, then she makes herself her coffee and we both are working on the business. We usually wait to eat until like 11 and it’s the same thing usually, eggs, salsa, maybe some bacon.

7 days a week all day every day. All we do is plot and scheme about the mission we’re on. We are always working and never working. We go to bed focused on it and we wake up focused on it. I’ve got 10 employees to manage, two franchisee owners starting businesses and ones in another state, I’ve got 300 customers we service and should be at 400 later this year.

It’s a blast and I couldn’t be happier.

I was thinking the same thing the other day...if I did all the stuff these books and videos and "gurus" say to do, half my day would be taken up by things that don't grow my business and don't seem productive to me.

I have always thought that is the key though...figure out what works best for you. Everyone is different. Personally, I hate working out in the morning, I'm lazy and unproductive in the gym when its early morning or late night. But put me in the gym smack in the middle of my day OR right when I'm done the normal hours workday and I'm on beast mode. On the flip side, even though I'm unproductive in the gym early in the morning, put me at my computer with a to-do list and I feel like a wizard. It has taken me a lot of years to figure what works for me, and it constantly changes and adapts as my kids grow, business grows, life changes, but I find the routine that feels right and go with it, tweak as needed.

Right now, I wake up whenever. I only set an alarm if I have a meeting or need to be on site at a certain time. If I wake up before the kids I get some nice peaceful quiet work in, if they wake up first then I hang out with them for a while, eat breakfast with them and then get to work. I just start grinding away at the day's to-do list (usually written out the night before) until I hit a point where I feel like I need a break. I notice it in myself when I'm getting stressed, or overthinking something, or just not being productive, that's when I hit the gym. A good run or lift session helps clear my mind and get me back on track. I don't usually eat much for lunch and even when I do it's typically at my desk or in the truck driving so I consider my gym time my "lunch break". After my workout I get right back to work, try to be home between 4 and 5 so I can eat dinner with my family and have time with them until the kids go to bed. After the kids go to bed it's usually back on the computer working until I burn out for the day or go to bed. My wife and I will watch tv together or just sit and talk a few times a week. The shows are ridiculously stupid a lot of the time but time with her is time well spent. I guess I'm more on the side of the wake up, coffee, and grind crowd. I just like getting shit done, that's what keeps me going.
