You don't try to escape routine, you design it to fit your needs.

Feeling trapped in routine is what happens to people who live their lives on auto-pilot.

Take control.

Be very specific.

Oh man, I love me a good routine.

One that fits what I want out of life. One that brings me closer and closer to my goals. One that gives me autonomy and control.

Yep, love a good routine.

fortu1992 said:

how you escape from the daily routine?

Hi, I'm new to the forum and this post caught my eye.

I remember trying to escape the routine as well, and have tried in various ways. First, I went to teach English in Asia for years - the routine changed, but there was still a routine. Then, I went to work offshore on oil rigs. My routine changed to month on, month off. Now I run my own copywriting and web design firm, and there's still some degree of routine. In fact, I found I HAD to create a routine to be able to make consistent profits.

One of the dangers when you break free from the 9-5 is believing you can do what you want, when you want. This may be true if you have an income generating website or bestselling book, but for most businesses you need to make sure you put the business first and design your own routine.

Once the routine is built stick to it and make sure other people in your life know what to expect. This last point is important - I've had family members get mad at me for turning down invitations because they say 'But you can work when you want' - there has to be some sort of line or you will find yourself socializing more than working on your business.

Anyway, thanks and I look forward to reading and contributing more!

This is what I did.

I spent nine and a half years in what I like to call the "post-secondary phase of my education" where I mixed periods of university study with time spent in China and a few other places working and engaging in language study. Not everyone's cup of team, but time well spent for me.

During that time, I learned the skill of teaching language to children, so once I decided that it was time to finish the "post-secondary phase of my education" I applied to complete my bachelors degree and moved permanently to Beijing. I leveraged the skill I learned during the earlier period of my life to gradually move towards working just a few hours a day Monday to Wednesday and taking Thursday and Friday off altogether (from income earning work). By earning the bulk of my income just two days a week (Saturday and Sunday), I had a lot of time free on the other days of the week to engage in at least 3-4 hours of focused work on my own projects.

I'm just now nearly the finished line on the development of my first product, something that will help language teachers do their jobs easier and better.

Needless to say, the last several years have been far from routine. I've had the flexibility to pursue a lifestyle that fits my needs while having the time and energy to do the unroutine on a regular basis.

There are already some quite good courses, but I'm trying to do something new that may make the difference in the language's world.

I've done the ESL thing before... problem being there are literally millions of English teachers and schools and a lot of them are online. This is not to say you can't succeed, but you are gonna' have to do something truly unique to stand out from the others already in the market.

Other languages may be different and less competitive, but then that also probably equals a smaller market.

Have you thought of selling your business? Even if it isn't hugely profitable, most businesses can sell for x4 annual revenue with the idea being that someone can turn it around and make it more profitable. Can you use any of that time to develop a side gig to replace your income from you current business? Then you could sell you shop and just do the side gig. Or, can you use any of your working time to learn a new skill that you can market? Again, you would be replacing your current income, to prepare to sell your shop. Can you use a portion of space for anything else to help up your income? Adjust your glass and look at your situation again. You might find an opportunity lurking in the corner.
