My wife and I have chosen to heat our house like poor people in a 3rd-world country: with biomass. I went up the mountain to get another load of fuel yesterday.
Snapped a pic of a couple turkeys. Behind them you can see lots of red madrone berries. Bear scat this time of year is full of them.

The spot I planned on going was occupied by a couple folks target shooting, so I headed a bit further up until I came across this recently-fallen giant. Someone had cleared a path and driven under it. Those "supports" aren't doing anything right now, and I wouldn't trust them to stay put under load.

I recognized the tree, and found a photo of it that I took a while back when it was still standing. The lowest branch is 60 ft up.

My saw is 64cc with a 25" bar. Not even close to big enough to cut through in 1 pass, but it worked fine for 2. Some day I'll get a big saw.

I don't usually pick wood this big to collect, but:
-it was in the road and needed to be cleared
-the heartwood was solid and dry
-it was split by the fall.
If it hadn't been pre-split I wouldn't have been able to load it. I didn't bring a splitting maul, only an ax, which was enough to break off partially-split pieces. I wouldn't even attempt to split full rounds this big with an ax.
Handling firewood is a workout. I struggled with this piece.

I loaded a face cord (1/3 cord) and took a lunch break. Made a tiny fire for fun and practice.

Fire is cozy, comforting, and entertaining. I have a theory that people's natural, biological attraction to fire is a big reason people like staring at TV screens and phones. I have half a mind to start a public health campaign to encourage kids to put down their phones and play with fire instead.

Just chillin with a bowl of home grown. No rush to wrap up as it's nice out, and the wife thinks I'm busy working hard. Extra time is extra credit![]()
Didn't see another person except for a small airplane the whole time at this spot.

Gnarly root ball pulled some big rocks with it, and the hole it left would be a great start to an emergency bushcraft shelter.
Split and stacked when I got home.

I see this as a lifestyle/hobby that saves a little bit of money. I probably "make" about $15-20/h doing this, but it gets me out in nature and is more fun than exercising in the gym. My wife thinks it's sexy, and that's always a plus.
Living that Big Timber lifestyle.
I pictured you living in suburbia, seeming as you own a shoe store
