One is closely aligned with spirituality, self-empathy, self-understanding, kindness, etc.
The second school of self-development is all about mental toughness.
Do you believe in self-empathy? Or do you believe it's BS and it's all about mental toughness?
Mental toughness, ie forceful self-direction, is the default mode of operation.
We learn and grow up this way. We are told what to do, we learn by mimicry, and we are compelled to action by the violent demands of adults who have the final say over our behavior.
As we mature and learn autonomy, we dissociate the compulsive demands of our parents, teachers and then finally of society, as we unscript from their demands and lead by our intended design. Though many of us grow into functional adults. few of us effectively individuate in self-understanding.
I think discipline, mental toughness, and hard work are all we've got, until we learn by intelligence to achieve what we want by choice, rather than by force.
This is an art of understanding, of integration of experience into harmonious action, of an intentional behavior achieved by the most potent and mature beings.
Forceful directives are useful for certain tasks, but as it pertains to self-development, I think learning by understanding oneself is essential for leading an intentional life.
From Carl Jung:
"Not only is it desirable for man to become individuated, it's indispensable because through his behaviors with others, he commits actions which bring him into disharmony with himself. In all states of unconscious contamination and non-differentiation there is a compulsion to be and to act in a way contrary to one's own nature. Accordingly, man can't be at one with himself nor accept responsibility for himself."
Self understanding is essential for elegant posture. The birthing hip joints that are free to articulate in every direction aren't so in the forceful person. The conflicting motivations we sustain by not understanding ourselves result in physical tension across our motor patterns of action.
Our movements will be rigid to the amount that we're stubborn in attitude.
