Would you provide static/dynamic contents that require translation page by page?

Depends on what you need translated, but usually a website has 2 separate parts that need translations.

- Static texts: Think buttons, menus, footer links, greeting messages from emails etc. Basically stuff that once written doesnt change. To translate this I give them usually a text file and inside it a JSON array (search for the term in google if you dont know what that is) But this has been a hit and miss, depending on the agency. Recently we prepared a sort of editor, that translators can use to translate static text. The editor is basically a list of all the texts in the base language and text fields for each of the language translations so they have minimal ways to screw it up.
The static texts are difficult to get right, since you need context on some of them to get a proper translation.
Sending context along with each text for a button, menu or email sentance is close to immpossible though.

- Dynamic texts: Think blog posts, articles, testemonials, pages like terms and conditions and so on.
These are bit easier, since you can just send the agency a bunch of links to the pages in the base language, and you get back a very accurate translation for each of the links (each link -> different page).
The formatting here is a big problem and I`ve yet to come up with a solution.
Translators LOOOOOVE MS Word and what you get back from them is usually badly formated, if at all.
Forget about images in blog posts, they are like invisible to them SMH.

How do you update the "translated" content to the app/website/platform? Do they provide snippets of translated contents and they are updated individually within the tech stack?

Yes, static texts are updated by hand each time there needs to be something translated, and for the dynamic texts we just use an admin panel, the same one that the site editors use.

Wow, I really appreciate the time you took to write down all these details!

This is helpful in understanding the issue. I just recently started learning/working on web app development (I'm focusing on building an MVP for a SaaS targeting the space that I hope I understand pretty well - engineering professionals/students)

alexkuzmov said:

The static texts are difficult to get right, since you need context on some of them to get a proper translation.

As I was learning about how websites/apps work, I thought to myself - there's gotta be significant challenges in setting things up in non-english settings. For example, getting behind in the latest tech updates due to language barriers, Needing a 3rd party to get things translated with the cultural context, understand regulation differences, etc. Having a layer of software syntax on top doesn't help at all. I am gonna definitely think about this space

I feel like I'm finally learning how the world really works in this forum. This is really exciting.

Typically a code wrapper would map to pre-translated strings at render time. (Check out a bit how behind the scenes stackoverflow does: Getting Stack Overflow Localization Tooling Ready for .NET Core | m0sa.net & Nick Craver - Stack Overflow: How We Do Deployment - 2016 Edition , this is very similar to how the companies I've worked at have all done it to a degree).

Then at whatever interval you choose (usually major release/minor release) you send out the mapping files (prepared via script ripping out from source code) to an agency who does it by hand. Yes sometimes you need to provide them more context, sometimes they ask other times they just hack job it. How the context is provided is usually company by company different.

This is expensive and takes time to await the translations (moreso if you target many languages) and its done a lot more tediously/manually for companies that can afford that.

I've not seen static/dynamic used the way the other responder replied. I will say in my experience static means text that is known ahead of time and can be in the mapped/translated lookup files that come back from the translators. Dynamic usually refers to things users input in realtime and cannot be pre-translated (think variable driven strings/in JS template literals, etc.). I've seen a few methods for approaching dynamic but there isn't really a great solution. This is an area ripe for AI use / browser improvement.

Seems the person made the box for low cost. There are downsides to this shuffler though that don't 100% fulfill the need of a truly randomized deck. In Casinos it's a very expensive machine in order to make the card deck truly randomized. I wonder how much a competitive venue would pay for the same machine to fit the sleeved cards?... Maybe someone from the forum will solve your problem for you. Maybe you’ll find a half baked idea you can develop into something.

I’ll start with mine:
- Uber for freight, there’s a massive shortage of freight drivers right now, how about someone with a Ute/truck can just do bulk local b2b deliveries for warehouses like an Uber.
- people with Crohn’s disease sometimes have to do these strict diets where they only eat these shakes, they do this for months and they only have 3 flavours. I think this is the case anyway I don’t have crohns but I remember a workmate doing it years ago and complaining there was only 3 flavours, how to spot an idea 101.
- a phone charger cable that’s some kind of folding circuit board that folds up shaped like a credit card. Definitely doable with the new thin connectors and the usb that are just the flat board part of it.
- a print on demand 3D printing business that prints peoples custom in game characters from games like RuneScape, this is probably the best of these ideas, it would make a huge business if it was done well
- when houses are auctioned people have to get a house inspection before they bid because they can’t do it after they bid, this can get really expensive if you lose a bunch of auctions and is so inefficient. Set up a business that inspects every house being auctioned and just resells the same inspection to anyone interested. Even better if you just pay a share to someone who’s had an inspection done there already and gives it to you to resell to recoup some money.
- yoga mat covers like towels that slip over the mat, cool patterns, washable, grippy. I think I’ve started seeing these now but still an idea.

That’s all I’ve got, hopefully some others a willing to share theirs.

It doesn’t matter how terrible they are just share them here it’s what it’s for.

- A machine that puts Babies nappies on or puts Babies into Nappies (my 10 month old daughter won't let me put hers on without a 5 wrestle as she tries to crawl off the changing table!)

- A suction cup spoon that sticks to the ceiling of a microwave and stirs your fodd as it rotates

Top 20 books & movies
I was wondering of building a micro SaaS site that lists the top 20 books and movies. Users might be able to upvote/downvote them. And aggregate data from sites like Amazon, Goodreads and IMDB could help to sort the list. Just want a simple sane list - either as an app or as a website. I always hunt for good books to read and movies to watch and end up wasting time on the wrong ones. So, this is my personal problem to solve. Thoughts are welcome!
