Hi guys

My girlfriend has been an eyelash technician (beautician) for 4 years and has been self employed working from a space at home for just over a year now

We’ve managed to grow her client base massively through word of mouth, Facebook ads and overall providing a really good service. She’s now at the point where there is too much demand and we’re looking to open her own salon in Scotland, UK.

She does the fulfilment, I help with the business side (marketing, accounts, customer service, policies etc)

We’ve found a place that looks perfect for what she needs, has room to expand and is in a great location, we’re just in the process of getting together the funds to secure the property.

So I’m just looking for any sort of advice anyone might have around opening up a shop/salon? Has anyone had any experiences they could share (same industry or not)? Any mistakes we could learn from?

The plan is for her to work with her client base for the first few months whilst we keep marketing and pushing for more clients then bring in an employee to help with the demand. I’ve always explained how important it is for the business not to rely on her and we’re looking at ways it can run without her.

I’m well aware that beauty businesses are saturated and especially our local area there is one on every second street corner. This has always had me worried but I feel like the size of client base she has would help overcome this?

- Side question -

Can anyone shed a light on what sort of traits/qualities a location-based business could have to open up various locations? Would this be as simple as targeting other areas the same way as we do now for our local area? Creating a culture around the shop that people recognise or relate to? Maybe then if people are travelling further to come to her shop, it’s a good sign we should open up in that location?

Sorry for the bit of a brain dump!

Any help anyone could offer would be hugely appreciated. This will be the biggest step we’ve ever taken in the world of business.

Thanks in advance
