Hey there, my name is Marc (obviously from my username) and I am in the UK. I first bought and read MJ's book around 3 years when I first starting out in business, and it genuinely gave me some solid inspiration.

But, sometimes you need to refresh on these things, and I think I've probably read it every year since. Just finished up with the latest book too so decided it was time to jump into the forum.

To give a little background on me, I've recently turned 40, and since jacking my corporate job in 4 years ago to start up in business have done relatively well compared to how things were for me when I was doing the 9-5. I wouldn't change that decision I made at all.

But... I feel a little bit like a fraud. Let me tell you why.

I make my money via SEO, affiliate marketing, online lead generation. That kind of thing.

Don't get me wrong, the money is good, and my family doesn't really want for anything and we have a comfortable life compared to most people I know, and certainly compared to 99% of the global population.

But all I am doing really is gaming the search engines, offering no real value to an end consumer because ultimately the products and services I refer them to they would have found anyway, I am just an unnecessary link in the chain earning my percent.

The whole concept is like a house built on sand, and let's be honest, could collapse at any time. I don't control the product, the service, or have any form of ownership from the customer's perspective. The companies I do business with could pull the rug out at any point, as could Google, and so it just doesn't feel sustainable.

So back to the fraud statement. I feel like a fraud to my family really... they think I am successful businessman, and I guess in some part it's true (comparatively speaking), but I don't honestly feel like I am running a bonafide business.

I worry that the whole thing could collapse at any point.

Whilst aspects of my life are very Fastlane - in so far that I work when I want, and don't have to answer to anybody - it's not true Fastlane.

I want to build up a genuine business, with a brand that I can be proud of, and that offers value (thinking of some of the points read in UNSCRIPTED ).

So what do I hope to get from the forum and what can I give to the forum?

That's an interesting one I suppose. I am not sure I can 100% answer that at the moment.

All I know is each time I read the Fastlane book it gives me a temporary boost which tends to last around 2 weeks. Perhaps being part of the forum I can get that adrenaline boost on a more regular basis.

Essentially though I am in the process of giving serious consideration to starting a completely new business and am in the formative stages of research relating to that. I am in the process of selling part of my business and a large portfolio of websites I built, so it's time now to change direction potentially.

On a daily basis I tend to work in isolation, so with the forum I am going to be honest and share progress for feedback (I hope that's not a hollow promise) and also see how I can contribute to other's own journeys.

Hopefully I will be building some relationships on the forum, whilst building a better business, and changing my current mindset of being that fraud.

Hi Marc,

Welcome to the forum. You shouldn't be too hard on yourself. You've accomplish more than the average person has so start building on that. Use the processes and thought patterns that you've already put into place into a new venture and I'm sure you'll do fine.

Depending on what route you're looking to take, I can advise you to read the following:

Give yourself some credit.

If you can succeed in your current activities, you could succeed elsewhere. If someone is giving you money, you obviously are communicating value and delivering, you just don't like the medium. Recognizing this disconnect is how the change starts.

Welcome aboard.

I agree with the guys. You're providing value to the people who're rewarding you for the sales or leads you generate for them.

You've also done it by swallowing any ad spend yourself and pulling yourself up a helluva steep learning curve. Getting profitable doing affiliate marketing isn't a mean feat. Doing it consistently and that can keep a roof over your head is even more impressive.

Are you capturing the email addresses of people before "selling them on"? Can you offer more value to them afterwards?

I don't do affiliate marketing. Maybe @Coalission @eliquid can suggest other things too?

Sounds like you could easily make a success in e-commerce.

And even better if you're already making your bills/living money from the affiliate marketing.

Then you'll have an e-com business with real world value and still have the affiliate marketing money coming in! Hopefully you won't hit any real issues with the affiliate marketing either so you'll be earning loads more, be more stable and have a "real" business as you put it.

Personally I think affiliate marketing is a real business with a real skillset, whilst it can be quite volatile I think it's still a good way to make money if you spread your risk across multiple products and treat it like a proper business and also use the money wisely.

I wish I knew how to do it as I'm sure there is good money in it AND it'd give me the skills to enhance my ecommerce business. Even if I could earn an extra £1000 /mo from affiliate marketing I'd be pretty happy! I've registered a few domains, but never really got anything off the ground for one reason or another!

Feel free to PM me if you want to do some skill swap chat... I'm from the UK also, very good at the technical aspect of E-commerce but a little lacking on the marketing side.

Thanks guys, great replies and will dig into some of the links and info asap. Re: ecom, I've actually set something up recently but early days, and @SparksCW will definitely drop you a line in here shortly.

I don't think turning 40 has helped... I seem to be perhaps analysing things too much and over-thinking on the amount of perceived time left.

Hi @Andy Black, no, and no... the niches I work in don't really lend themselves to this type of activity unfortunately.

@MarcUK, I also went through that stage of feeling as though I was taking advantage of people when I first began selling my sourcing and importing book online some years ago. That was never my intention and I knew I was giving value to those who made good use of what they had bought from me.

The reason for feeling uneasy was that I knew that a big percentage of people who buy such books never act on the information in them, so I have taken money from them and they have not really benefited.

As the years have gone by, my conscience has eased mainly because of the expressions of thanks that I so often get, some of which show that I have in fact saved people from potential disaster.

Maybe you could concentrate your affiliate marketing on promoting only those products or services that you know will bring real benefit to the buyers. Don't trouble yourself with the thought that they would have found the product anyway. As an affiliate marketer you provide a service that can be of real value to the end customer who, without finding them through your promotional efforts might remain in ignorance of the availability of exactly what they were looking for.

There are many good products and services available, but they wither and die because of the inability of the vendor to make them widely known. Affiliate marketers have a genuine role to play in helping less skilled marketers.

Walter
