My wife and I are visiting our hometown of (cold a$$) Quebec City, Canada before moving for good in the Sunshine State. Unexpected delays to get our US residency paperwork lead us to stay a few extra weeks in town. I took this soul crushing day job in a small local garage to stash some extra cash while we're stuck down here and learned something very valuable in the process. For the record, the job and the business itself are everything but sexy. It's dirty, exhausting, doesn't pay much and at first glance it doesn't even seem to be that profitable.
So the other day a co worker asks me to look up a client in the computer system to get some info on her winter tires (ugh...). Client's first name is Ferdinande, which is a very unusual name even in french. Thinking she must be the only client matching this description, I look her up in the system using only her first name. Not one result shows up, but about FIFTY! Hell, this small local business got more clients named Ferdinande than I got total clients with my internet startup. This was quite a reality check and I immediately realized the power of running a business solely based on a NEED. The sexier it is, the more cluttered it will be and less money I will make.
I already knew that concept, but experiencing it was truly eye opening. I now feel compelled to start a business in the nastiest field when I get down in Florida, knowing the power of having a psychological entry barrier that guards your business like an army of stinking skunks. I'm currently involved in the Fitness field, but I'm reminded everyday that there are just too many "passionate people". Even if 95% of them don't offer a legit service, it's like a thick smoke screen that blinds the customers to the good product and services that are out there. Nowadays, everyone and their mothers got a fitness product to sell and I simply don't feel like competing with that is worth the hassle. Opinion?
