Wow. It's a shotgun mic? That should be great for excluding those leaf blowers!

I'm looking to upgrade soon. I listened to a podcast I was a guest on recently and the Blue Yeti Nano isn't great. It's great for voiceovers on video lessons. Hmmm... maybe it's because we were on Zoom.

Love the foam on the wall too!
It is an Electro Voice RE 20... THE mainstay of the world's radio broadcast studios.

I thought it would take some toying around with, but after messing around with it a little bit, I am fully confident today's show will roll with the new mic!

First show with the new mic... It is super warm. It makes me sound better. HAHA. Do I all of a sudden have a better voice for radio? LOL

I know there are a couple of plosives in there, but I am still getting used to talking into it. I think it sounds wonderful and ZERO background junk.

I am really rather surprised by the age curve of listeners these days! As we have gained listeners it has moved strongly middle age. Fascinating. It used to look like a perfect downward slope.

Honestly, I am just thrilled that people of a wide range of ages are finding great value in it!

Yes, it sounds awesome! Your voice sounds great and there's NO background noise as far as I can tell.

Today, I am taking an emphasis off of the more political topics and back towards the core of the show... Entrepreneurship and building. I will always stick up for capitalism, but I am NOT going to lose sight of the REASON I do, which is our building of great things.

Lately it has felt like an awful obligation to address the political happenings, since there have been so many. It has been tiring and uninspiring to me. Obligation ROBS my inspiration...

While it is never the intention to stifle an entrepreneurial process, too much dwelling on political misgivings can have a negative impact on our motivations. THAT is the LAST THING I would EVER want to do, yet, I am guilty of the demotivation such a focus produces.

Today, I begin to guard against that, even though it makes me feel like I have let the commies win (and it shouldn't because the destruction of motivation is actually losing.) We, as entrepreneurs exist to navigate, to the best of our ability, the system we have, and improve the world via our value.

We believe it and if the world doesn't, so be it. We will make it happen anyway.

Damn brother, the new mic sounds fantastic so far!!

Less than a year later and you legitimately sound like you have been doing this show your whole life. To say that I am completely blown away is an understatement.

Keep up the fantastic work. You make my drives so much more interesting, as this is when I generally listen.

Thank you buddy!

You have no idea what this means to me!

I am in HEAVEN with that microphone. There is a clear reason they use them in broadcast. I was way too ambitious with the Lewitt condenser, which is probably a higher clarity microphone, but I don't have a professional studio. The ElectroVoice RE20 is the best purchase of 2021 so far.

I can monitor the microphone and literally NOTHING, but my voice registers. I use almost zero eq, noise cancelation or gate anymore.

Today's show is a bit of a segway into this aforementioned change... A why...

YES, this crazy stuff matters, but what matters more is that YOU matter. Make it so.

YES, I will still spend time on some political topics, but never at the expense of our motivation or willingness to build.

A little housekeeping here...

As much as Anchor has been a good beginner host for the show, KBRS is moving on to a different hosting provider. Libsyn.

The biggest reason for this is what they call IAB certified statistics. These statistics are industry standardized and provide great reporting for the winning of potential broadcast media deals and or additional sponsorships.

The second biggest reason is that it is owned by Spotify. I once considered this a big advantage to the platform, now its reputation for some censorship has me making a preemptive strategic move.

In the Parler thread, I criticized their decision to allow a politically opposite single point of failure. That was an exposure to risk, and this is me following my own advice.

Despite the clean nature of the show, we preach an unpopular narrative of wealth building, individualism, and capitalism. I don't want to find myself deplatformed like Prager or scolded and messed with like Rogan.

The migration might come with some hiccups, but with any luck, you might not even notice. So, just in case, please bare with me on this and bring any issues you guys notice to my attention.

Thanks so much guys! Very excited about the future of the show.

So, if you noticed, I tried the “new” best thing since sliced bread social media app... Clubhouse. I bought an iPad today just to try it...

As fun as this might be for some of you. That’s not happening. It‘s way way waaaaay too much work for me and I have other stuff to do.

That said, I have been trying to find a way to get the KB message out in smaller bites that hit hard and encouraging new listeners subscribe and listen to the show.

I’m going to focus on Twitter and YouTube a bit with what I’m going to start calling SUPER SHORTS, they will be both slips from already recorded shows like this:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTB1uYI51V0

...and also me just grabbing my phone and recording short videos that hit hard.

I’m planning to keep these as close to one minute as possible and keeping them super simple.

Reminds me of the 5-12 minute Joe Rogan videos you see out there that are clips from his longer ones. It's a good reuse of what's already been recorded. Maybe you can get a VA to do that for you?

Oh, and I didn't try to join up to Clubhouse because I think there's plenty other marketing channels I should be using before some new one.

Exactly.

I was hoping clubhouse would be something perfect for me and therefore a place to put some effort.

The VA thing is perfect.

Thank you for the show Kak! I really like the intro and the positive message you're sending out to the world and think you're doing an important job, telling people they're in control of their lives and have the option to build something that's bigger than them, especially now when everything is whomever/whatever's fault for the world being not what people would like it to be. Like you said, it's important we keep up with current events, but try to remove ourselves from all the noise/drama that comes with it.

A suggestion of mine for the show would be: find a guest who (strongly) disagrees with you on a topic and have a discussion with them about it. It wouldn't have to be a topic that's causing a lot of division amongst people, although that would be cool if it were done in a civil way, but I think it'd be really cool to hear two different viewpoints and who know maybe you could teach each other a thing or two ;) Kind of like the discussion you did with Gilman following the pandemic thread, that was cool, except you ended up agreeing about almost everything.

Maybe you've done some of those already however (there's many episodes I haven't listened to yet), anyway: keep killing bigger and thanks again for the show!

Wow!! This sounds like an awesome idea. Everyone is just trying to improve their situation in the best way that they know how. Shocking to say it, but even hardcore leftists think that they are doing what they need to do in the best way possible for their situation. Hell, even hardcore legit racists who think that only whatever color they are think that they are doing the right thing.

To me the key is education, and bringing light where there is darkness. And yes Kyle, you are doing your part to bringing this light haha. Someone can't always know better if they don't seek to find a better way.

Also, I did not notice a change with your host, nothing changed on how I listen on my part. The audio sounds fantastic. I never noticed an issue with file size before, but perhaps this could be an issue with rural or foreign listeners, so anything that helps can never be a bad thing.

Also, thank you for diverging from heavy politics. To me what is going on is like negative crack that absolutely makes me feel like a big bag of shit. Sure, it is fun while discussing it in the heat of the moment, but then right after I am just sapped of will.

Keep up the great work!

Damn dude! Thanks for listening! The show with Gillman goes WAY back. Lol I didn't even know I was going to have my own show at that point.

That guest has been tough to find actually!

I invite almost every public figure saying something I disagree with in the most polite way possible. I always offer a friendly and thankful debate.

Getting them to debate the topic that they so adamantly declared "the way things ought to be" is extremely difficult. Most of them are people saying we need to save capitalism by adding socialism.

Although, I've invited Krugman like 20 times.

One of these days, I'll get one. But no one likes a debate.

The best I can give you at the moment is the one where I debate the writings of Leo Strine Junior and also when Dave and debated capitalism leaving people behind.

I like the way you brought up DeBeers. That is pretty anti-capitalism all on its own. Artificially suppressing the diamond supply and forcing the world to pay your prices is BS. They are the ones who are supporting the child slavery and "blood diamonds" through their artificially high prices. If any competition (or lab created diamonds) were allowed to flourish, there would be no need for mines at the expense of humanity.

I have never though much into those "fair trade" labels, but it is interesting to note that there is a premium associated with that. Much like how to be labeled "organic" your farm needs to undergo an absolutely crazy number of hurtles. Meanwhile it does not necessarily mean that your farm is any better than someone else's, just that you had the resources to obtain the labeling. Case in point, the organic eggs here are all absolute trash. Sure its organic, but the ingredients that the chickens are eating is horrible. Organically horrible. I eat local Hutterite eggs, a lot of them, and they are the best eggs I have ever had. They have 0 fancy labels.

Had an interesting show today for those of you in product based businesses or have a lot of potential supply partners... My advice, SQUEEZE THEM, because your competition does. It is better for both YOU and THEM if you have a viable product that continues to sell.

Hi @Kak ... do you know any good checklists/articles we could step through to set up a "proper" podcast (whatever that even means)? I've 30+ episodes hosted on Soundcloud and am wondering what I could do next.

You switched to Libsyn from Anchor I think. Why did you make that switch, and how are you finding Libsyn now?

EDIT: I found your why in your previous post:

I will do two checklists for you. One on the super cheap that is still "proper" and the other that is still affordable, but actually full blown professional quality.

I will get to it soon. I'm out and about. Buying an engine hoist and other weird kak things. Haha.

Ok, so getting started with a podcast...

Setup 1- I'm going to call it the minimum for a proper podcast.

  • Hosting platform- Anchor - Does almost everything a Podcaster needs, except YouTube for free. Very simple. Downside? Big brother platform. Maybe not taken as seriously? Stats suck. $0/mo
  • Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) - Audacity - Can record and edit audio and with the right workflow, it can sound as professional as anything else. It is open source, and also has a lot of great youtube videos about using it properly. $0
  • Interface, Focusrite Scarlett Solo. You could also step it up here and go to the Zoom Podtrak P4 If you plan to physically mic up more than one person. The Zoom has better preamp for broadcast dynamics that need a lot of gain. So room to grow. Focusrite Scarlett Solo can be had for as little as $110. The Zoom device is $200.
  • Microphone - Go with a popular dynamic stage mic. The Shure SM58 is probably the most popular mic in existence. I have the Lewitt 550 DM which was a competitor to the Shure. Either are good and can be had for about $100
  • XLR Cable- Just get the Amazon basics one. $10
  • Headphones - Do not underestimate having a pair of actual studio monitors. They will reproduce your sound better and help you EQ and build your mic control. I use in ear, but over ears are cheaper. AudioTechnica, Shure, Sennheiser and AKG. Just shop around to see what you like. Expect $50 and up.
  • A desktop microphone stand like the ammoon folding one on amazon for $13 is actually very nice. It is my guest stand for Brittany.
  • Pick a room that doesn't echo. $0
For $283 total you can have a very nice production quality with this setup.

Setup 2 - Big League

  • Hosting Platform - Libsyn - Why? Because most big deal podcasts use them. They have really good stats and have a track record of allowing freedom of press. $40/m for my Advanced plan.
  • DAW - Hindenburg Journalist Pro - It is excellent, just trust me. It is a big upgrade. $375, they also have a rental plan.
  • Interface - Get the aforementioned Zoom Podtrack P4. You will love multi track guests and huge preamps that don't require cloudlifters for the world class microphones. $200
  • Microphone - There is about equal love in this industry for both the Shure SM7B and the ElectroVoice RE20. They are literally what you will find in radio studios all over the world. Watch some YouTube comparisons to decide what is right for you. I chose the EV RE20. $450
  • XLR Cable - Get a good one. The Mogami Gold series is high end and won't be the source of any hiss. $70
  • Headphones - Spend more than before and do your research. They are important. I prefer Sennheiser and also went with their IE40 PRO in ear monitors. $100
  • Microphone stand - Matters ZERO to your sound quality so this is personal preference. I chose a 48 inch Samson boom to reach across my large desk. I will eventually just get a Yellowtec because my RE 20 might just be a TINY bit too heavy for the boom. $120
  • Actual echo control - Office has hardwood flooring so it was rough in the beginning. I got a nice rug and cut custom plywood to back 48 square feet of acoustic foam in strategic areas. $500ish
So $1815 gets you big league sound and $40/mo gets you professional stats and hosting.

You can obviously mix and match these setups to make it your own. I would totally abandon any USB microphone in favor of XLR, real studio monitoring, and the gain control that comes with a true interface... Especially when it can be done so inexpensively.

The stage mic is always nice to have, so starting with that gives you a good spare if you upgrade later.

If you have any questions, just ask!!

Thanks for this breakdown @Kak. I’ll bookmark it to come back to.

I’m currently setting a website up to embed each Soundcloud episode into a blog post. I’ll then look at moving from Soundcloud to Anchor, Libsyn, or something, and then maybe upgrade bits of kit after.

Tackled the concept of "Average" today. I think this is something a lot of people need to hear.

Had a great chat with a guy I know in a Facebook group this morning. Dayum, I didn't know he's got 25 years experience in radio, has done a radio show every week for 5 years (that's 400+ shows), and has 90+ podcast episodes.

You can tell he loves radio and podcasting. It's very infectious.

I'm going to go with Libsyn. I've already signed up and sent their support an email to see if they can import all my Soundcloud recordings. I'll then cross each bridge as I come to it.
