For mmorpg games, just give your account away or sell it. I played Runescape, I just gave it away on a forum. Great decision.

For video/computer games, delete it or give it away.

Leave the game forums, change your social circle.

Start the real game, life...

Who sets the missions now... you do!

Fill that wasted time with some useful. Sell the console, shut down the accounts. Now refocus on your overall wellbeing: hit the gym, read, research, learn. Find new hobbies that are productive and will help you succeed rather than remain a waste of space and time.

Do you still live at home? Yes, that question matters.

Here's what happened to me.

I've been a avid gamer for nearly 10 years! At certain point in my life I was so addicted to it, that I would just skip my university lectures, ignore my girlfriend, family, friends... I lost my girlfriend and was kicked out of uni all in the same year, and even that did not stop me from gaming.

So what did? How did I completely stop playing computer games?

What I realised at certain point was that the REASON I was playing games, was because I would get those fake achievements. An in-game achievement felt good, really good, and that kept me going. I could not find the same kind of sense in real life. The whole idea of having to work endless hours, study and care about people seemed to dull as compared to grinding my way to that epic achievement online! I was getting appreciation, fame, digital money, a huge sense of achievement online, so why would I ever want to live the Real Life??

One day I met a girl online. She never played games. In fact, she sucked at them completely. Instead, she was a great achiever in real life. She was a lot younger than I was, and had achieved much more! I got jealous as we kept chatting on and on, every single day. I would spend hours just chatting to her instead of gaming. I was shocked seeing how I just completely ignored games for the last few days.

With my mind fresh from new insights, philosophies, I knew I didn't want to spend the rest of my life just playing games. Hell, I wouldn't wish that kind of burden on my family and friends. I knew I had to become SOMETHING. I knew I had to make Real Life Achievements. So I started reading. Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Slight Edge, The Millionaire Fastlane , The 80/20 Principle, etc. I was fascinated by all the great people who have hit the jackpot in life, who have achieved all those great things. I wanted to be like them. I read more about these great achievers and started idolising them.

The books I read had changed my thinking. I realised I am more than capable of achieving something in real life, and that the games I played acted only as a set-back. Every day you wake up, you choose how you want to spend it. You can either enjoy playing games, or you can enjoy reading a book or talking to people. You can spend half a day in bed being hungover and then hit the next club that same evening, or you can have some coffee, write a blog post, hit the gym and finish the day with a book in your hand. Your life will go downwards, or upwards. You can rot, or you can improve, but your life WILL go a certain direction. It's your choice which one it is.

I chose to improve. Every day. Gaming does not help that, so I chose not to spend my time doing that.

Oh, and I sold my Windows machine and got a MacBook instead. Gaming on a MacBook SUCKS!! That kinda puts me off gaming as well :D

If there is one thread that I can give some insights to it's this one!

I've been an avid gamer since the original Nintendo came out. I've played most of the traditional gaming systems as well as some computer games. I think the reason why I quit playing was multiple parts:
1. I had a family. Others were depending on me to be my best.
2. After a while you realize that most of the games are meant to take away your most precious asset which is your time.
3. Most games detach you from your reality by offering you a better one. If you really had the life of your dreams would you waste it playing video games?

But everyone isn't where I was so I'll leave you with this....

If you die next year would you want the person giving your eulogy to say my friend helped impact multiple lives with his business/product or my friend was at level 37 on (insert game here)?

P.$.- I believe MJ's insights are the best.... if you didn't read it please do.

I probably spent my afternoons camping your corpse in game and then ended up upsizing your combos at night. It's not worth it, trust me. I thought it was fun at the time, but if I could go back I wouldn't make that particular mistake again. 10+ years at anywhere between 10-14 hours a day + nothing to show for it except bad eyes and a bum ticker = epic fail.

I can help with this.

1. Get in the car
2. Go to the hardware store
3. Buy a good size hammer... at least 22 ounces. A 32 ounce ball pin hammer preferably.
4. Go home
5. Smash all of the games, game consoles and controllers into a pile of plastic.
6. Sell your PC and get a mac or surface because I have heard they suck at games.
7. Take a picture of the smashed up shit, post it here, and I will give you $2000 of my rep points. Post a video and Ill give you $3000.
8. Continue to impress and achieve here instead of games.
9. Don't buy any more games.

The true answer is...
You have to choose to give it up. Then act on that decision.
Game over

Hi guys.. I have a real big problem. I can't do anything or finish anything unless I quit games. I know it's not a serious condition that I have, but it does get in the way with a lot of things that I do on my computer because I get way to distracted. I end up playing 1 game then another then another......again and again. It's really just frustrating at the end of it all. I realize I haven'y gotten anything done at all. And minutes of gaming have become hours and it's really depressing.

I'm not trying to limit myself to a few hours a week/day/month, but I'm trying to quit for good. I know there are those out there that play games and are successful, but I really just want to get gaming out of my life.

If you guys are wondering whether I have a gaming console or a pc, I have a pc. That's why it gets in the way so much because since I'm using my computer to play games, I can't seperate it and I end up gaming because I see it on my desktop.

I want to thank everyone and anyone who helps me overcome this. There are many things that I can do in my life and I don't want it to rot away because I simply couldn't resist my urge. Any ideas and tips would be super helpful.

Thank you again.
I sold my gaming pc and got a Chromebook. You can seriously do everything but heavy video editing on it because google has it's own aps and most things are web based anyways. My productivity is through the roof now that I don't have games to distract me. Best Chromebook for the money is a Toshiba Chromebook 2. Got it refurbished from Amazon for $225 and it's in perfect condition. There are other people on this forum who have also made the same switch which is where I got the idea from. If you want something desktop you can get a chromebox. You just have to buy a mouse, keyboard, and monitor. (Which you already have.) I just ordered the samsung Chromebox 3. It's the fastest cheap one. I got it because I can't really be ergonomic on my standing desk with a laptop.

pfft u guys are crazy, games are awesome!

Y'all just gotta develop better discipline.

Games develop hand eye coordination, make you smarter and help u think outside the box... well depends on the game i guess lol

i've been hooked on games since i was 4 years old, absolutely major part of my life, but i gave it all up almost 100% for the fastlane.

But now a few years down the line i see how long it can take to succeed in the fastlane, I once again play here and there and i even started a gaming youtube channel to promote my game company brand or whatever... killin 2 birds with 1 stone here fellas :)

Usually avoiding things you want like working on your business is part of a bigger issue- need to focus more and gain more clarity on what you want out of life .

However- sometimes the case is just putting yourself in a better situation. I choose to not tempt myself. If I don't buy shitty food, I won't eat it! I was so close to buying a PS4, literally at the store... and I realized, why would I tempt myself with having this in my house while I'm trying to build a business with limited time? When I'm rich, I'll have all the time in the world to game!

Easiest to remove temptation. I deleted all my games. It gets rid of the "I'm bored and just need to kill a few minutes" spiral of rationalization that leads to wasted weekends and evenings. If you have to re-install that shit, you lose interest. Also broke my youtube addiction by killing my internet service for a couple months.

Maybe I don't have the self discipline some of the other folks here do, but removing the temptation long enough to kill the habit worked wonders for me. Now if I could just get every Whataburger shut down....

Here is the real deal here:

Gaming is situational avoidance - you game because it is a way to ignore reality.

You ignore reality because you believe - whether consciously or unconsciously - it hurts less to look away from the things about your life that you want/need to change than it does to look right at them.

Drugs, alcohol, gaming, TV, porn - these are all ways to distract yourself from the messages that your life is sending you. The messages you are ASKING your life to send you to get yourself off your a$$ and become the person you actually want to be.

Want to quit gaming? Drugs? Anything else that you mysteriously do to yourself that inhibits your own growth?

Next time you want to game, stop and ask yourself "what just made me want to sit down and play - right now?"

Not "Why do I like this"

Not "Why do I do this"

In that moment, what was it that flipped that switch and made you want to tune out.

Now, ask yourself what you are feeling in that moment- Anxiety? Loneliness? Fear?

Do this for a few days and my guess is that you will see a pattern.

Now comes the hardest part - you have to look that fear, whatever it is, right in the face. You have to accept that part of yourself, and realize that it isn't the gaming (or drugs, porn, TV, overeating) that is your problem:

Your problem is whatever you are using these things to ignore; the things that you are afraid to confront.

If I'm not mistaken Andrew wrote a whole thread about "triggers" and why you do certain things, including distracting yourself from reality.
@AndrewNC

Your post is on point as well. It's the same for just browsing the web.
If something pisses me off or I get stuck for a while while working, I unconsciously pressing strg+t (new tab), type in "f" and "enter" to pop up Facebook within a tenth of a second, just to catch myself 15 minutes later looking at cat videos. :shifty:
(Edit: not literally but you get the point ..)

This works. I used to be extremely addicted to one particular game. And have been addicted to games all of my childhood.

I didn't smash it though, nor did I record it being dismantled. I just gave it to the recycling centre. (lame I know).

Do you believe in coincedence? I don't.

Just after Christmas I could work from home as we had night shifts (IT support for APAC region) and all I and my two colleagues had to do was to log in and do nothing work-related as there were bank holidays in Australia at that time. So I and my team leader decided to spend time playing Battlefield 1.

tt was 2 am, I was trying to rank up my assault class when I saw on my laptop that a new email arrived. I checked the subject and saw there is a new post in the watched thread:

"HOW DO I SERIOUSLY GIVE UP GAMING"

I wish someone took a photo of the expression on my face at that time. "WTF are you doing?!" and "Why are you wasting your time on this?" thoughts were running through my mind. I did not know it at that time but the snowball started rolling.

I have tried gaving up on gaming in the past but I did not engaged on anythin new so it resulted in selling PS3 and... buying X One very soon. This time it was different.

I sold my X One 10 days ago. I have not been visiting any game sites/forums for 15 days. Each time I feel like just checking what's going on in the game industry I visit thefastlaneforum.com :)

As I do not play before sleeping I sleep more and feel much much better in the morning. My mind is not occupied with games and I can focus on important things.

Giving up on gaming or at least limiting the time you play may be a challenge but trust me - it's definitely worth it.

This is some real Truth, right here. Also, this applies to many more things: shopping, dating, exercising, food, etc, etc, et F*cking cetera.

"What is so bad (or perceived to be so bad) in my current reality that I call my life, that I actively look to distract myself with things in an imbalanced manner?" Also, it doesn't have to be "so bad" as it can be something that's potentially mildly uncomfortable -being human, we default to a path of least resistance. But that's not usually the way that will lead us to what we really want out of life.
