Hey guys, I'd like to discuss guest posting on blogs as a strategy for 1) getting traffic to your site and 2) getting relevant links to your site for seo purposes.
This may be an "old news" method for some of you, but it's something I am in the process of learning and have been having good results with so far, so I thought I'd share with you the steps I've been taking (trying to make this method kind of newbie-friendly). Also, I'd appreciate any additional advice / tips that you can offer, not only for me, but for anyone else that reads this thread in the future.
*For the purpose of this guide, I'm going to use BLUE WIDGETS as the keyword / niche / industry that you're working in, to make it easier for everyone to understand the method.*
*This method also assumes that you've already done your keyword research and have selected specific keywords that you are trying to rank for in the serps.*
Step 1 - Build a Twitter following of people that are interested in Blue Widgets.
Search by industry on Twellow for Blue Widgets or, in Google, type in site:twitter.com Blue Widgets.
Follow a bunch of these people / pay someone to follow these people for your / use a follower tool like TweetAdder (can't recommend it though because I haven't used it). I'd suggest building a list of at least 500 followers that are specifically interested in Blue Widgets before contacting blog owners about guest posting though.
Step 2 - Find high pr blogs in your industry / niche. (You'll either need Scrapebox for this, or you can use the SeoQuake plugin for Firefox to do basically the same thing.)
Using Scrapebox, search the blog friendly web 2.0 sites like Blogspot, Wordpress.com, LiveJournal, etc. Probably want to stay away from sites like Squidoo & Hubpages with this method, as we're looking for blogs that have scores / hundreds of posts written on them, not one post lenses / hubs.
Of course you should also search individually owned domains that utilize Wordpress with this method (this is in addition to Wordpress.com sites - separate things, if you didn't know).
In Scrapebox, in the harvester section you will type in something like site:blogspot.com + intitle:"Blue Widgets" or you can do the same search in google (I'm not exactly sure how you'd do it to find individually owned domains without using Scrapebox though).
After your results show up, sort them by PR (in Scrapebox check PR then sort, using SeoQuake plugin, just sort by PR). Some of the results that come up may only have a single page on that site about Blue Widgets, ignore those results. You're looking for blogs that are well known in their niche / industry for Blue Widgets. Save the results of these high PR sites (PR of 3+) in a file, you'll need them soon enough.
Step 3 - Write expert-ish articles about Blue Widgets.
Spend some time writing 10+ articles about Blue Widgets so that you can have something to give to the blog owners. The articles could be tips / advice / your experiences with Blue Widgets, but it shouldn't be a big promotional piece about your website; nobody wants to read an 800 word advertisement. If you get direct traffic from their blog, that's great, but the real purpose is just getting a link. Preferably a link within the article with the anchor text keyword that you're trying to rank for in the SERPs.
Don't know the niche well enough to write articles about it? No problem. Post job ads on Craigslist under the Writing / Editing section. Tell them you're looking for someone that has experience with Blue Widgets to write articles, and you'll pay them $5 - $10 via PayPal per 800 word article (you can offer to pay more if you want, but I'm a cheapskate so I only offer the $5 - $10).
Post these job ads not just in your city, but in at least a dozen major cities / college towns throughout the US and Canada. My thoughts on this - college kids are always broke and will take quick little 30 minute writing gigs like this for some extra beer money.
(You could try Mturk for this, but the quality of articles you'll get will probably be crap, so I wouldn't recommend it)
When people reply to your ad, let them know that you appreciate them offering to write the article and that you're also looking for someone to write several articles over the next month or two and this could turn into a couple hundred / few hundred dollars for them if they're interested in writing more articles and if their writing style / expertise on the subject meets your requirements.
Collect your articles, check them for duplicate content using CopyScape, if they pass edit the article if necessary, insert your link (with keyword anchor text), pay your writers. Keep in touch with the best writers and ask them to send you more articles. Pay them well. Rinse and repeat.
Step 4 - Contact the high PR blog owners from your list.
Look up the blog owner's email addresses on their site and ask them if they would be open to the idea of having guest posters on their blog in return for a link to your site within the article. A lot of blog owners get tired of constantly having to provide content and may be willing to take you up on your offer, just so they don't have to come up with something to write about for the day. You might get half of them to reply to your email.
Of the ones that do reply, tell them that you'll also willing to send a shout out to your Twitter followers, recommending their blog (you should have at least 500 Twitter followers for this incentive to be effective in my opinion) and you'll have an article and Twitter shout out to them by the end of the day.
Step 5 - Mention them on Twitter, send them an article.
Send them one of the articles you (or one of your contractors) wrote. Also send them a screenshot of your Twitter page, proving that you in fact did recommend their blog to your Twitter followers.
Once they post the article on their blog, you'll have a highly relavant link to your website from an established, high authority blog in your niche / industry, with your keyword anchor text. The combination of these should be very good for seo purposes. And maybe you'll even get some traffic to your site directly from the article. Win-win.
So that's the strategy I've been using and it seems to be working good so far, just need to scale it up. I would really appreciate hearing any tips from you guys that have more experience with this method / other seo methods than I do.
