My first progress thread on the outside!

Don't see why this cant be out here for everyone to see.

I have been teaching cooking classes online for the past 6 months, still doing that but i like branching off and trying other things.. but monogomy! (dont care)

So i have a list of potential clients in my home town in niches where the CPC isn't to crazy.

First one on the list i am crossing of is mechanics!

I have 3 google ads set up for lead generation for this niche at the moment.

3 shitty landing pages with a CTA which includes my phone number and a form if they wish to put in there details and be contacted.

All i am planning to do is to get the phone calls and enquiries that come to me and passing them off to a mechanic to see if they want to work with me.

I will charge them after i have shown them i can produce results, if they don't want to work with me there is plenty of other mechanics around here who will.

I have some idea of what im doing.

A business owner has expressed interest already and has an ad budget of $200.

This business owner runs a business in vinyl collection, small budget i wont even charge him anything but i'll use that money to learn.

If i get results i'll charge then.

That's it for now.

Starting local and getting known locally is a good way to start off.

Also following. You can definitely do this.

I guess the hardest is the copy on the ads and the landing page. I need to go read Andy's posts again !

The copy is easy. Take a cue from what they were looking for.

The hardest part is signing up and keeping clients!

Didn't really care much about the landing page.

But that's the copy I have below, just making sure what's on the ad is also typed in the landing page when they get there.

I have 3 different landing pages all under the same website.... different pages just have different words and pictures and a different CTA

11 Impressions.

No clicks so far.

adding more ad groups and bidding at the keyword level.

I notice most searches come from mobiles so i am optimising my landing pages to be easy to navigate on mobile.

Getting my next landing page ready for people that are looking for a real estate agent.

Competition is low with decent monthly searches.

What i like about the idea of selling to real estate agents is, that i would assume each lead is worth a fair bit to them as there selling high ticket items.

You've learned this with no clicks and no ad spend so far. That's why I love paid search. You can learn on a whiff of spend.

Slight correction:
  • Each *sale* is worth a fair bit to them.
  • Each *lead* might not be, depending on the lead-to-sale conversion rate.

So true.

We get leads at work from an AdWords guy and every lead for the last month....I have not had one convert, yet other sources of traffic I'm converting into sales.

Donno what the boss is paying him for..

Hmm maybe I can sell my boss leads instead lol.

Your boss is paying him to help dial it in.

Try not to think of it as a "source of traffic". It's people, who happened to be on Google, YouTube or whatever.

The question is: What were they doing? Searching on Google? Watching videos on YouTube? Reading blogs? Checking their gmail? (Google Ads can show for people doing all of the above.)

If they were searching on Google, then what were they searching for? What are the search terms you're seeing in the account? Do they match what your boss is selling?

Hmm maybe I can sell my boss leads instead lol.
Selling leads is riskier as you have to foot the ad spend first and dial it in before you get profitable.

Maybe you can charge a low introductory monthly fee to run the campaigns for him?

Had a chat to my boss today he has no clue about what there doing hes just paying them i guess.

But yeh that makes sense, you have to collect data and see what search terms are coming up the most, i believe i am right with that?

Yes yes that's right, they are people not traffic.

Maybe not my boss, but for others that would be a good idea, i was being a bit tongue in cheek with that.

I also said the freelancer is *helping* to dial it in. It needs the business owner to take ownership and get involved. A media buyer doesn’t know what’s a good search term or bad. They can guess, but a (smart) business owner only needs to see one search term for a whole new “angle” for the campaigns to be born, or a whole new product line.

Tell him you’re studying Google Ads at the moment. Then let him know how things are going. What’s the best that could happen?

He has these guys doing it at the moment.

I don't think he is that smart, i asked him about how the google ads was going at the moment.

He was a bit stand offish, asked what do you mean?

I said well im typing stuff into google and i don't see any of our ads.

He replied with ''google is a bit complicated and doesnt make much sense''

Apparently they do facebook & google ads for us.

I feel i could potentially help but don't know if he would accept my input.

I suppose it is worth bringing up one more time with him and letting him know iv'e been studying it.

Upped my daily budget a tad.

Also increased my bid price by a bit aswell.

I am not getting many impressions at this level.

Added in a bunch of more keywords to in different ad groups.

Also changed up the ad copy a bit to see if anything changes and I get some CTR.

Cold called 3 mechanics today before work.

All not interested for one reason or another.

Some businesses are just happy staying small or wouldn't be able to handle the workload.

Franchise owners are the worst i find, there attitude is that everything is done for them, i found this in my cold calls as well as my day job.

There attitude is no X franchise does that for us as a franchisee, they dont want any involvment.

So any franchise businesses are my last resort.

I will be taking the first leads to the mechanic i go to, who i have talked business to quite often when i go in.

About our struggles etc etc, just life stuff.

He will be my first call, i will just casually say oh hey bob!

Been learning this thing lately and im getting pretty good at it, anyway the reason im calling is ive got a sales lead for you this person is interested in getting there car serviced, heres there number, name etc etc.

Let me know how you go with it, hope you have a good day!

It is much more likely to convert with him specifically than if i was to go in there and start speaking things he doesnt understand, what he does understand is, phone call - sales lead - sale for me.

Definently have to dumb it down for these guys, got to dumb it down so they get it.

I have an excel spreadsheet done up of all mechanics in town with there details.

That way i can keep track of who iv'e spoken to.

Broad match is great im finding for discovering new search terms, don't fully trust your own head for coming up with search terms.

I though i had everything relevant covered, but new search terms are being uncovered by my ads.

70 Impressions

CTR 7.89 %

Total clicks 6.

Updated the Landing pages and made them a bit more sexy and professional.

added another add group and keywords as well as putting some negatives in.

No leads yet, but still early days.

Keeping an eye on my bid price across all ad groups and where im positioned on googles home page depending on my bid price.

Seeing roughly what ad position i can get with the bids.

Going nicely over here :p

Money-Down-Drain.jpg

I exact matched some keywords that where triggered by certain search terms.

Don't know what the result of that will be but im excited to find out!

Just when i think i understand this stuff i hit another barrier of confusion.

That's alright though the barrier will be smashed down to the ground soon enough, my daily budget is going to keep me out of trouble anyway.

Launch and learn.
