Yes.... it was a very good conversation.
Figuring out the spouse / entrepreneur thing is a very big challenge... and an important one too. It is something that affects most of us. Either we are dating and considering marriage someday or we are already married.
I tend to disagree with a lot of people that were involved in that conversation. (Andres and I could have gone around and around all night).
It is about priorities. Yes, financial freedom is important for the family and yes, everyone will have to pay a price. But, at what point is the price too high? Protecting the peace of mind of all the members of the family is important too.
I disagree that you need to find someone going to the same place. We are all on our own journey. What is important is learning to support one another. Learning to give the other what is important to them while still preserving what is important to you. That is the "dance" of marriage and it is a never ending dance. To think that you will find a spouse that is the perfect entrepreneurial match for you may leave you searching forever. No two entrepreneurs have the same pace, risk tolerance, methods, and comfort levels.
When ever I say something like that, the person at the other end of the conversation says something like... "easy for you to say. You and your husband are both entrepreneurs. You are headed in the same direction. You are partners. You just don't understand."
Well. We have been married for a long time. It hasn't always been like this. We have been to hell and back, walked through fire, etc. etc. Marriage is a constant process of give and take, nurturing both yourself and the other... compromise... growth... Marriage is a process, not a destination. Your spouse is your partner through thick and thin., not a dream person that will fulfill all you are looking for.
Through thick and thin means working through the differences in how you handle and think about money. There will always be differences there.... even when two entrepreneurs are married there will be differences. Learn how to solve that, and you will have a happier existence together. Go looking for someone else . . . and all you will do is take that problem with you.
