What color shirts does everyone where? Does it matter as long as it is not bright and flashy?

I think most guys go with white or light blue when wearing a suit.

When not wearing a suit, then it doesn't really matter as long as it matches and isn't bright and flashy.

I'm a solid color kind of guy myself though. I've never liked the look of striped shirts.

For me solid colored clothing. Absolutely no logos.

this topic is interesting, but why almost all successful tech entrepreneurs of the last 20 years, dress like this. I mean like @Kak said, they need their customers, they need their investors but they dgaf. And no they didnt start dressing like this when they achieved fu money. Sam Walton dressed like a redneck in the beginning when meeting up with potential business partners.

I think KAK is right with this topic but i made several very bad experience with people that dress very well, either they are sales people or a big bluff. Just my observation.

Successful tech entrepreneurs who dress like that... How many have there really been?

How many deca-millionaires and higher are running around playing the game at an insane level and who are slinging 8 figure deals? A ton. Look at how many Bentley's, private jets, and mansions there are. People are buying those things, and it is not just the one off nutty tech guy who refuses to take a shower.

I will take my chances by looking sharp

Personally, I wear Sperrys or athletic shoes with golf clothes depending on what I’m doing. Try driving shoes. I generally wouldn’t wear golf clothes to a meeting unless I was inviting someone to my club or to an informal lunch.

That’s what I figured. They’d be something to wear when not doing business. Or to something a little more informal.

this topic is interesting, but why almost all successful tech entrepreneurs of the last 20 years, dress like this

This is a factually incorrect statement. It is a generalization fallacy. You’ve looked at Steve Jobs, Zuckerberg, and San Walnton and have concluded that all succeaful “Tech Entreprenuers” dress like this.

I am here to Inform you that this is incorrect.

Ross Mason of Mulesoft, Acquired by SalesForce.com - Team

Where is the Turtleneck?

Bob Young of Redhat, Acquired by Microsoft - IBM is paying $34 billion for a company that was founded by an unemployed guy working in a closet

Where is the turtleneck.

I established my ability to credibly opine on such topics in my first post.

Tell us about yourself @Vanderbilt What's your background? What created such a clear and perfect understanding of business attire?

i already said that i think you are right, reread my post. Sounds like some people here get offended on this topic. I just posted my observation. Nothing more, nothing less.

No offense taken. You made some pretty definitive claims... According to you “almost ALL” successful tech entrepreneurs dress like shit. Tell us how you came to that conclusion.

you are right my sentence was too overstated. when i look at people like Jan Koum(Whatsapp), The youtube founders, Tony Hsieh(Zappos), Daniel Ek(Spotify), Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs etc.. i get the impression they never heard about business dress etiquette.

I agree and can't help but wonder if it would have done them some good along the way. Once upon a time they didn't have the name to go on. They were introducing themselves to people that had no idea who they were. Today their credibility is established. They are operating on their name.

Many choose to continue dressing for success even after their name is well known. For example, all of the sharks on Shark Tank dress very nicely, except Cuban, but he looks like a slob doesn't he?

yes, Cuban dress the worst but is also the most successful regarding financial success.

Strange isn't it?

I don't understand Vanderblits opinion. Is he suggesting that the successful guys are wearing a T-shirt now, so that's ok?

Im sure this was said already, but Mark Cuban has his name, and credibility. people on these forums, and the mass public, do not.

That's really the difference.

Steve Jobs introduing apple products dressed like a bum/ordinary Joe...... YOU ARE nOT STEVE JOBS. lets get that through our heads.

There are very few people with super high-Iq's and also smart business people. The majority don't have that trait. So until you do, you gotta dress the part... no one is saying you need to wear a suit every day.

when you have a $1 billion dollar networth, then pretty sure u can wear whatever you want wherever you want.

but, mark cuban dresses for the occasion. he's always wearing a suit on shark tank.. what he wears is generally calculated.

Yea but his is like the ‘all billionaires dropped out of college so you should too’ this

the reality is ALL of the billionaires I can think of that ‘dropped out of college’ (Zuck, Jobs, Gates) did so because WHILE they were in college they started raking in millions. But actually most successful entrepreneurs didn’t do that.

i mean if you’re sitting in your calculus class while Microsoft starts raking in billions... yea, i agree. Drop out. Otherwise, I don’t think it’s good evidence.

but to elaborate on this stuff.. there are two types of entrepreneurs.. the creative innovator types, or the businessman who’s good at running established, conservative companies..

both of those have different ways of acting

but in general there are literally no drawbacks to looking awesome. When I see someone who doesn’t look good I just think they don’t care about themselves enough to put forth and effort. It’s such an easy way to make a good impression.

Gates wasn't making millions before he dropped out, not even close.

This picture will make you wonder. Who was the one coding the software and who was the one selling the software?

*Hint* Gates has said he looked over every line of code for the first 5 years they were in business.

Either way.. he dropped out because of Microsoft. People think because there have been some very prolific and public billionaires who dropped out of Harvard, they think that dropping out of college is the path to billions. First off, Harvard is extremely selective in the first place and to even get in you have to basically be in the 99th percentile of IQ (150 and higher,) and have already have an impressive resume before even starting school. In other words, guys like Zuck and Gates were extremely gifted before they went to college, which is likely the reason for their success, rather than the fact that they’re dropouts or don’t dress to the 9s (even though i certainly don’t think they’re poorly dressed.)

yes, exactly what i also observed. The sales guy is always dressed up and the tech guy just concentrate on the "product". You need both for a good business.

the rest here calm down, I don't say you should dress like shit or drop out of college just because any billionaire did. I don't do either.

The conclusion, if you hate fashion but good at making inventions you coop up with a sales guy hahah

Fashion is NOT what we are going for here. Fashion is what @The Abundant Man posted full of movie stars. Fashion people will buy skinny ties and tiny lapels and a suit so tight they'll look like a bobblehead.

Rico suave sales douche in his shark skin suit and his jet black greased back hair is NOT what we are going for here either.

I'm also not talking about wearing the same cheap, wrinkled, dress code, suit 16 days in a row like the 35k per year analyst on the 5:30 subway train living out his miserable existence.

Even the word "style" implies some sort of eccentricity.

We are ONLY looking at timeless business attire that has been the staple of American business for more than the last century. Clothes that make you look like someone that can do what you say you can do. The fact remains, we judge people on first impressions. If you look like a dipshit, you will more often than not be treated like one. If you look like an intelligent, capable and educated LEADER you will do better in business.

That said... this is why I like Brooks Brothers. There is nothing in the store I loathe. It's all classic American business.

@Vanderbilt this entire forum is devoted to entrepreneurship. A form of leadership. Ushering in the new. Leading people to adopt your visions of how whatever industry should work. We don't do that from the back room with our heads burried in some piece of technology dicking around with intracacies best left to the experts. There is a reason Ray Crock turned McDonalds into what it is today. There is a reason Waziniack needed Jobs. There is a difference between leader and expert. You can be both, but if your business is to outgrow your efforts, experts must be hired to their role.

I like https://ashleyweston.com/
Its men only style, with emphasis on timeless stuff that never goes out of fashion.

I learned a lot of stuff like
1)ur undershirt must never be seen under the button up, so always get a V neck if ur unbuttoning the collar.
2)its embarrassing to admit lol but I never knew about the concepts of "dressing up" and "dressed down", but it makes sense I guess.
3)theres 3 general types of pant length, Full Break, Half Break, Quarter Break, No Break. Chinos should be no break only, jeans and pants can get away with more.
I actually went to get my pair of jeans hemmed to not bunch up, and ffs I gotta admit it does look goddamn better lol.
4) I learned its not about Skinny fit vs Relaxed fit, its all about body type. Baggy clothes will make a big guy look fatter and a skinny guy look skinnier, and vice versa. In fact the whole concept that the point of clothing is to highlight ur strengths and conceal ur weaknesses is news to me LOL
5) a tshirt should be pinched at most 1-2 inches at the both sides of the waist.
6) oxford shoes are timeless
7) can't go wrong with white, navy, gray
8) best business casual type pants are WOOL, suit pants are too thin for that look.
9) no white socks
10) boxer shorts are best
11) some things like jackets are worth spending a ton of money on, other things like tshirts wear out too fast so don't go crazy.

and more... I really learned a lot lol

Checked out the Brooks Brothers website and I like it. Just a little...pricey.

Though I don't see anything wrong with the Celeb pictures that I posted. Why hate on James Dean and Steve McQueen?

It is a little more premium, but it's nowhere near the price of Bironi, Zegna and Kiton stuff that everyone loves to plug. If I buy a Brooks Brothers item, I intend to keep it for a decade or two. The patterns age well. I have a sport coat I bought a long time ago, gray herringbone in pattern. I just got a new overcoat from Brooks... it has almost the same pattern. That is timeless.

I know my stafford items won't make it half that long. They are often a little more of "what's popular" for color and patterns and that is OK.

No hate at all! Just a quantifiable difference as I'm sure you can see.

So check it.. I had a crazy experience today that reminded me of this thread, so I came back. For the past week or so I’ve been kind of depressed. I’ve been working non-stop, nose practically glued to my MacBook and barely had time for myself. Haven’t shaved... nothing.

So this acquaintance of mine that I’ve only known for a week says to me today ‘wow dude, you really have some pep in your step today.. the last few days you’ve just looked miserable.... why you look like you’re in such a good mood today” And I’m usually the type of dude to just be in a good mood, but the last week or so, I haven’t and since this guy doesn’t know me, he didn’t know that.

So after that kid said that I was thinking about it and wondering why. It happened around 11AM. So why have I been so miserable for literally the past week and at the snap of a finger my entire mood changed like that.

So I finally figured out why. I shaved. I’ve been so busy the past week that I neglected shaving and everyone was saying ‘don’t worry about it.. it’s No-Shave November” (I’ve never taken part in No-Shave November because I’m the type of person who always has to be meticulously shaven.) But anyway, my mood took a complete 360 by just taking some time to make sure to look good like I normally do.

Seriously guys, I highly suggest paying attention to the link. Pay attention to how different your mood is when you take the time to look great. Note how much more confident you are. Even aside from just looking good, you think different, you feel different and you act different.

I think this really underlines the importance of looking your best... not only for presentation, but for your own wellbeing as well.

You'd look great if you were a mafioso undertaker from the Jersey Shore about to go to a ridiculous club after work... Not to a business meeting. Still better than the Zuckerberg hoodie.
I am the mafia

I notice that’s a liberal, California CEO thing... Zuck, Jobs... CEOs in the valley are notorious for wearing 'flip-flops to board meetings.' But I also wonder if weather plays a part. A suit/shirt may be a little rough in the sun like that. I notice NY CEOs don’t do that.

I think it really depends on the person as there are wide variety of us. Some people can pull it off wearing t-shirt, jeans and flip flops while other have to be well dressed in business attire. I think it all comes down to how true you are (how you sell yourself and your company/product) since there are many sleezy guys wearing nice suits and genuine guys wearing the exact same suit (the end result is different as you will see (hope to see) past the BS of the sleezy guy).

Personally, if I am in a business setting I believe you should be well dressed so not wearing the t-shirt, jeans, and flips flops.

When it comes to meet and greet settings or casual business settings (ex: late dinner at upscale bar) then I think a nice pair of jeans (not your everyday) with button up and blazer looks fantastic.

You can get a decent price on Designer suits in Nordstrom or even Nordstrom rack. I bought one like that for my wedding and you cannot compare the quality of my designer suit to Men's Warehouse suit I had to get for my friend's wedding. My body shape isn't really changing so I've had that suit for 6 years and it still looks brand new. I am also a person that prefers Quality over Quantity.
