This is something that has been bothering me for quite a while.

I must admit. I found inspiration to write it after reading this post from MJ on Elon Musk’s recent ‘behaviour’.

Link here:

What's going on with Elon Musk? Eccentric or going mad?

But this was just a trigger.

Do you know Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Or Warren Buffet?

Or Bill Gates?

Or George Soros?

Of course you don't (or you do).

Either way they are multimillionaires / billionaires.

What I have noticed is, they have allowed themselves to release brain farts in volumes, that made me think they had lost touch with reality (at least temporarily, great excuse, I lost it, did something horribly wrong, but only for a second, so I am excused...).

"Reputation is like china, once broken it's never well-mended" - Abraham Lincoln

One of my greatest idols, and the ‘biggest’ bodybuilder of all time. Arnold Schwarzenegger. One of the greatest figures of business, sports, entertainment etc… He ripped one like this:

"“if you work hard

and you play by the rules

this country is truly

open to you.

You can achieve anything."

but did he get to where he is

playing by the rules? Or would

he have ever even been famous

had he not taken

those drugs?”

That’s from a movie “Bigger, Stronger, Faster” (recommended watching). The transcript here:

Bigger Stronger Faster Script - transcript from the screenplay and/or the steroids movie

Another one let out by Arnold when I saw his FB profile and he was writing something about clean energy… The guy who got Hummer adapted to civilian application, who has driven ‘tanks’ and flying jets solo………….. While I admire all who want to better our world. I don’t like people advocating one thing (ban steroid, suppress ‘unclean’ energy consumption) and using the opposite to achieve their goals.

This one was from another thread I cannot find now. Mark Zuckerberg promoting open society:

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QM8l623AouM

Zuckerberg Wants An Open Society; Just Not Within His Own Company

While building physical walls in his real life:

Mark Zuckerberg is building a wall, and Hawaiians aren't happy about it

The last, but not least.

Warren Buffet, Bill Gates and the likes advocating some ridiculous policies, while benefiting from the complete opposite state.

Doug Casey’s Two Days with the Real and Wannabe Elite - International Man

To summarise.

Do you want to know my answer?

Because I am not omnipotent, I will reach out to mathematics, not to consume more of your time and space here.

Statistically speaking, the number of assh*les and assh*lness in every population should be in balance, according to normal distribution.

But the impact/influence/misery you can ‘apply’ to the world when having 5$ and BN5$ is completely different, isn’t it?

What is your opinion?

Dude, there were no such rules in bodybuilding back then. Arnie couldn't break rules that didn't exist, could he? At Mr. Olympia there barely are any today, even.

Steroids were legal when Arnold was young.

But yes all those people you've mentioned live in a bubble. They won't feel the effects of the policies they want. Some of them may even know that the rules don't apply to them.

Reality is a fun term, because everyone seems to have their own!

Seriously though - a lot of the social anger going on today is the result of everyone judging everyone else by their own standard for reality and demanding that the world see theirs as the "one true" version.

A billionaire does not live the life of a homeless person.
A software engineer making $120k per year is not living the same life as a waiter making $40k per year.
Someone in Ohio is not living the same life as someone in California.
A drug addict is not living the same life as a teetotaler.
A teacher is not living the same life as the politician who dictates education reform.
Democrats don't live republican lives.

We try to see other people's struggles but their reality isn't our reality.

Personally I interact with a wide variety of people. Some rich, some poor, some capitalist, some socialist, some teachers, some students, some atheists and some theists, some drug users and some health nuts. My social circles make about as much sense as a child scribbling on paper.

If it's one thing I've learned from all of this it's that almost none of these people will respect or understand the perspective of the rest. Trying to force them to 'open their eyes' is just an effort in futility and frustration.

I enjoy a good debate between these different people but the lack of understanding and acceptance between them is palpable. The greater the difference on some fundamental axis of life, the greater the misunderstanding.

And of course i'm no different. I have my own thoughts, ideas, feelings and realities. I'm cold on subjects people are hot to and hot to subjects people are cold to. That's life. We each have our own. The best we can do is try to live a good one by our own standards.

@above: I agree with you: there's survivor bias at play. If you know basic statistics, it's usually not feasible to run accurate statistical tests for nearly any studies. Here's why:
1. You have to get a random sample of everyone the study would affect. Even if you just take a small group of people, usually that group is easy to find which is a convenience sample.
2. You have to make sure everyone responds to the study in the study; usually that's not true. Also people could lie in the study.
So typically a study will be biased towards an outcome.

I read a fascinating book a few years ago. The author wrote it from a liberal/progressive viewpoint, but I think the science he quoted is valid. He referenced studies that found self-described liberals and conservatives have different brain structures and respond to stimuli significantly differently. Probably they developed their personal political ideologies as a result of their differing views of reality.

It made me despair that our polarized political environment could probably never come to a workable compromise, since we really don't exist in the same world. We have divergent values and beliefs of what is important and how it should be managed.

The same dynamic doubtless plays out in most interactions between people. Don't assume you can convince someone just by "explaining" your position. They may not agree with your axioms, your stated and unstated underlying assumptions about the situation. If you don't agree on first principles, it's hard to agree on anything derived from those principles.

They don't.

The thing with being F*cking rich is that:
  • You don't have to pretend to give a shit what other people think anymore
  • You have a lot more liberty to do whatever you damn well please
  • Many rules no longer apply to you
Got envy, OP? You green? You poor as hell, right? Feel better about this thread, instead of just working to get rich yourself?

Zero chance, absolutely zero chance, you're going to succeed. Nobody who talks like that, nobody who thinks this language is impressive, is moving out of his parent's basement in the next 5 years.

But the impact/influence/misery you can ‘apply’ to the world when having 5$ and BN5$ is completely different, isn’t it?
Well done, genius.

You should focus on something that matters. Really matters. Like: it can pay rent.

There are around 15 million millionaires in the US and you are basing your "opinion" on a couple of people that completed changed the industry/the world?

I'm pretty sure the number of assh*les (does the "o" really make a difference here? Sorry, I digress) in the population is equal to the population size. I guess it all just depends on your point of view...

The deviants are always the most obvious case studies. For every deviant millionaire there are many more relatively-sane millionaires no one knows about.
What a boring truth. More cash to the deviants! Ironically, the majority gets to define "sane", meaning anything they don't understand or agree with. Who pushes progress?

The thing with being f*cking rich is that:
  • You don't have to pretend to give a sh*t what other people think anymore
  • You have a lot more liberty to do whatever you damn well please
  • Many rules no longer apply to you
Sidenote; you don't need to be rich for all that. "chicken or egg"?

The USA has many millionaires who are leading normal, unsung lives. They are quieting taking care of their businesses and communities. Most of the time, you would never know that these people are sitting on large nest eggs. It's their secret.

What is most surprising to me is that there are people who are surprised to learn that human beings are often fallible, contradictory, unreliable, two-faced, self-deceived, self-absorbed, and in general do not behave as the rules of formal logic would predict.

What would ever give you (anyone) the idea that things were different or that money has any power to change it?

With Arnold. Think he fit that pose. And then he worked it. Definitely did not blow the planet up. Still business elements like royalities and more than that are working well towards that type of productacracy. With Elon. He is multifaceted. Must have some aces up his sleeve. Or a glowing tesla coil:)

True. Yet he slips something about banning steroids or being against…. Or his governor office. He basically said "I took one but you loser cannot do it anymore". I was naive. I know.

Lets just say it was true.

Why would it bother you?

I felt disappointed they could even say/do something like this. They influence millions. If not billions.

On the other hand, when I read your question, I shouldn’t be bothered because I can choose what to believe in. I should also stop thinking about it. But 10 years ago I believed what Buffet preached, not what he did personally. And it did affect my life negatively. I now put it under ‘life learning curve’ and have small regrets (hopefully none in a couple of weeks).

Thank you for this short but important question.

@DVU
See above. Thanks for commenting.

Yes exactly. I think these make headlines but most of them are silent heroes.

Which reminds me of this picture I saw today.

Charlie-Brown-and-Snoopy-cartoon-someday-we-die.jpg

@garyfritz

Thanks. Rep transferred.

I would also recommend “Sapiens”. @Longinus told me to read it and it’s one of the best books to get perspective about life.

They don't.

The thing with being f*cking rich is that:
  • You don't have to pretend to give a sh*t what other people think anymore

My idea was that if you are on certain level, it means you care even more about other people. I wrote I was naive.

Got envy, OP? You green? You poor as hell, right? Feel better about this thread, instead of just working to get rich yourself?

I don't know where it's getting from... Well, I know. From your keyboard, from under your fingers, from your head... Are these the only feelings, impressions and ideas you have about people?

About this? I don't have one.

Eleanor Roosevelt brain farts are also interesting. Did she invent a spaceship? Lead a group of scientists in the Manhattan Project? Who was she, because I don’t know her achievements except releasing brain farts like these.

Let’s stop discussing people and do what we love, don’t look at people in your business equation because people cannot be discussed. Because someone dead supposedly said so.

Oooo and ask MJ to remove this subgroup from the forum because the dead lady told you to.

What would ever give you (anyone) the idea that things were different or that money has any power to change it?

It seems it gives you choice to better yourself. And it seems it's not mandatory in some cases. Like Doug Casey wrote. When you achieve greatness in one field, it doesn't mean you know anything else. Except for this small part of reality.

What is your opinion?

I don't really care since I don't (try to) follow celebrities. Arnold has an electric H1 though. I had to Google that one.

As a note, these people aren't popular in a vacuum. They're popular because their opinion resonates with people.

If Arnold went around telling normal people the truth:

"You're all lazy piece of shits that watch too much TV and eat too much junk. You'll never become Mr. Universe or do anything great. Those of you that aren't lazy... well you most likely don't have the right body genetics for bodybuilding. Those of you with the top .01% genetics AND good work ethic. You're still going to have work your a$$ off for years with little to no reward, take steroids, and you still might not make it. Sucks for you."

Yeah... I don't think he'd be too popular.

It's easier to just tell people what they want to hear:

"Work hard kid. Eat your broccoli, do curls (in the squat rack), and one day you too can become Mr. Universe."

The takeaway.

People don't want to hear the truth. They just want to have someone reaffirm their own opinions.

It’s all your perception. Let’s pretend that I hate blue m&ms. So i pay someone to open up my m&ms and take out all the blue ones and reseal the package.

Does that sound crazy to you?

Well to me, it takes time that i value to do that and i have an assistant who i can tell to do that because i pay him a salary. Maybe it costs me $20 every 2 weeks and i have $50m. So why do i care?

But you make $30k a year so it seems ridiculous.

Its the same as having a landscaper or a house cleaner. It just sounds crazy due to your perspective.

You made my day today! Thank you for the forum $$$$$$. I love you Man!

I wanted to move this to PMs, if you ever would want to reply anyway, but will comment it here, for anyone in the future, let him find something useful, hopefully.

Have you done any of those things? I also don't know any of your achievements except releasing brain farts like this thread, so you think your opinion should also be ignored?

Let me know your thoughts on the Kardashians next, dying to know what you think. Can you believe Kylie Jenner is a billionaire? OMG, do you think she deserves it?!

Ok, I just don't think Eleanor Roosevelt should stand in the same row with Arnie, Bill, Warren, Mark and the likes... Maybe you will prove me wrong?

I haven't done these things because I am working on my own 'revolutionary thing'. No need to reinvent the wheel. And after talking to blue-collar-20+-year-experience-factory-plant-multimillionaire-owners, there are patents and ideas from before 1960s that are waiting to be developed and implemented into mass scale. Look at Musk, he took the idea from early 1900s and didn't add much to it, the battery sucked in 1917, sucked in 1980 when the guys quoted by me built the cars in the garages, and they still suck - lithium-ion made a huge difference, but still has no match to diesel and petrol. That's why I don't like Musk, I think he's not doing any good with Tesla (not to mention SpaceX but it will raise voices, I can defend, open another thread and challenge me there if anyone wants).

I don't know what Kardashians do, or Kylie Jenner. Are they fit into inventor/changing the world type of person and could stand in row with Buffet and Gates?

I actually didn't know this was the Gossip subforum, I thought the "People" in "People & Relationships" was in a different context, like most of the posts in this subforum, but then I see MJ's thread about Elon Musk, and while his reputation precedes him and yours doesn't, it seems like you posted this in the right place.

As for this one. So you basically 'discriminate' my ideas, because they come from under my nickname, not MJ's? Isn't that discussing people, instead of their ideas? Have you ever thought that MJ has ten more nicknames, with different 'status' each of them to lurk here and test users? Have you ever thought I might be him?

If your goal is to be wealthy and fulfill your life’s purpose, these are not the sort of questions you should be asking OP.

Start learning to ask better questions.

How did you assess that I am not wealthy and haven't fulfilled my life goals? Do you have some kind of device to do that? Assessing by forum posts etc.?

I humbly accept your advice. Thanks you @csalvato . The learning process ends with death, not a second earlier. And I still don't have evidence it ends then...

The average Westerner on 30k a year, is going tohave alifestyle that sounds crazy and out of touch to the average resident of subsharane Africa.

You pay a whole $1.48 to have somebody grow your food for you?

About half the world lives on $2.50 a day, 80% of the population of the planet lives on less than $10 a day. If you earn $50 a day, your out of touch with the rest of the world. You just dpont realise, it because they can't afford to get online and tell you.

At $300,000 as US median net worth, a billionaire is worth 3322x the average perosn

If you earn more than $32,400 a year or have a net worth of 770,000 (Include equity in your home, value of your car, computers etc) then your in the top 1% and out of touch too.

Are You in the Top One Percent of the World?

This post was the perfect way to describe it. I grew up in a family that was flat broke. Like no money, the only time my parents argued when I was growing up was over money, and it sure wasn't because they had too much of it. So throughout all of my life I viewed problems through the lens of what can be caused by a lack of money.

I then was put in a different situation in my early 20s where I was surrounded by 1%-ers. I was originally looking at all of their problems through the lens of having no money. I couldn't comprehend why they did or did not do certain things. Eventually I was able to realize and understand how and why they looked at problems a certain way. I saw that "rich" people had plenty of problems just like "poor" people, they were just different problems.

If people haven't been able to view problems from another group's or " class' " point of view, they will never understand their reasoning for believing certain things. Its something you have to experience for yourself. You can't apply your logic and reasoning to another class' point of view.

All of the world's problems could be solved if people could look at issues from other peoples' perspective without any bias. I feel that being able to remove your own bias when looking at a situation is a skill/ability that needs to be actively worked on and unfortunately is a skill that most people don't even know exists. If they don't know it exists, they can't improve it.

EDIT: I posted this after reading JAJT's post, without reading the rest of the thread. I think the conversation in this thread does a great job of proving my point.
