James Shramko has the concept of Infinity Projects in his book "Work Less, Make More".

Your Infinity Project is your side-project that will run and run and run, forever more.

This is the project you work on when you're taking a break from your main business.

It's ideal if you have a team, because you just tell them to work on the Infinity Project when they've got some free time. This means you don't pay them to sit around.

I guess it could be something as boring as cleaning the cars in the showroom, but ideally it's some kind of exciting change from the day-to-day - some kind of "skunkworks" that you and your team will benefit from as you pour more and more time and energy into. (Not just from growing it as an asset, but from all the new skills and experiences everyone acquires and can apply back to your main business.)

I've an idea what my Infinity Project is. Something I already do every . single . day. Something I can't NOT do, and have already been doing consistently for years. The best bit is that it's not unrelated to my main business.

But it's not about me...

What's your Infinity Project?

The thing that I can't NOT do is tinker with and talk about cars and recently motorcycles. While you do not need other people with cars to enjoy your own car, enjoying a motorcycle pretty much requires having friends on the same or similar motorcycles in order to maximize the experience.

How to make this infinity project, which you can't NOT do, related to your business? Well, I have already built one business around it. I make hop-up go-fast car parts for myself and enough copies for all my friends and customers.

Edit: Yes, I do what I love. Bite me.

That business would have become way more successful if I had chosen a better car brand to associate with and piggyback on.

Now I am thinking of doing the same thing with motorcycles. But I noticed there is not yet a decent internet community for the brand that I am interested in. I am now thinking whether I should start both -- the business and the community. Hence, my post from yesterday.

This sounds like a great concept; I've always felt uncomfortable leaving my VA's idle during lull periods, this sounds like a solution to the problem.

I've listened to some of James' podcasts before and would love to buy this book but I can't buy from Kindle store in my country, need to figure out how to get my hands on it lol.

Buy a VRN subscription and pretend that you are in the US.

Not sure if you'd be able to pay with your non-US credit card. You may have to buy an Amazon gift card then.

No question that my infinity project is health. It's such a key component to our lives and it's often overlooked. My good health is the thing I am most grateful for and as I age (nearly 30) it's something that I know will only continue to grow to require more attention.

For me, this isn't something that's taken the form of an external project. I've always liked to explore the mind and body. Recently that's been practicing yoga. It's what fills the gaps in my days - as you say the sand between the rocks.

I am sure this area of interest will materialize in various ways through my life. I am constantly finding myself with new ideas and thinking about how I could apply my skills to a project in this area.

Thank you for this post, it's interesting to see it conceptualized like this and really helps me with some thoughts I have on the concept.

I have a project that is 8 years old based out of Colombia. It was my first business and while I have not been able to tend to it, the project is always on my mind. I still have the site up and talk with contacts in the industry. I need to get back to Colombia for 3 - 6 months to get it back on track, it wont go anywhere or be taken, so as of now Im planning in 2020ish.

Some more thoughts on determining your Infinity Project (originally posted here).

Your Infinity Project may be something you do all the time already (infinity stretches both ways I guess?)

What can you NOT stop yourself doing every day?

What do you find yourself doing when you have a break?

What type of work ends up getting done first when you should have been doing something else more urgent?

Machine learning/deep learning/ data science.

I think those will be crucial skills in the future. With the advancement in computing powers and the amount of data being produced, it would be essential to have those skills (both the intuitive understanding of how it works and the ability to deploy code)
