Just a little background information before I go on with this post, I started reading Unscripted a couple days back, which is one of the main reasons this caught my attention.

I'm a senior in High School and within the first week of school, we had a Senior Meeting. We were told a lot of stuff, mostly about college and how some colleges will send "scouts" to our school to try and convince seniors to go to their school and stuff like that. I understand the concept, it's a good idea..until they came to my class.

Fast forward from the time of the senior meeting, about 2 months, and I walk into my second period Economics Honors class to find a middle-aged woman handing out flyers. What I found on the flyer was an ad for Keiser University, a college pretty local for me. Now, I feel like I would've been more interested in the start but I already have my future figured out. When she started speaking, I still wanted to give her my attention (because she's just doing her job, right?) She talked about her college and how it could be beneficial to us and such. What really caught my eye is what was on her PowerPoint. One of the slides was about how you want to get out of college and get a job that you want to have for the next 40-50 years. I was starstruck by this information. She was preaching the words of the Script and was teaching it to the young. On the next slide, false information, or what seemed to be, was plastered all over her slide. Talking about how college is a good idea for everyone, how you make more money with a college degree, e.t.c. I was concerned for my peers because I'm the only one in my class, or possibly the whole school, who has knowledge on MJ DeMarco and his books. In my head I thought, Ok she's just advertising, she's just stretching the truth a bit. But when she switched slides, that's when everything changed.

A video, accompanied with the title College Degree v. High School Diploma, was printed on the slide. When she started the video, I was greeted by a friendly tune with a soft voice preaching about college graduates. One of the first things the voice said was that people with a college degree have a less chance at becoming obese than people with diplomas. I shit you not, that was the first thing the voice said. I couldn't believe what I was hearing, but it gets worse. One of the next things the voice said was that people with degrees are most likely to care for and love their kids more than someone with a degree. Like WHAT? Is anyone listening to how ridiculous this is? Once the video was over, I actually had to keep my hand over my mouth because I really wanted to call her out for trying to brainwash everyone, including me.

I'm writing this as she's sitting in the front of the room, preparing for the next class that'll come in. I'm actually somewhat angry at her for doing this. But on the other hand, it's her fault that she lives an average life in the scripted world.

Scripted propaganda. Pure an simple.

Somewhat sad that at 17 years old, 99% of the teens will believe it.

I'm sure she didn't mention the $100K in backbreaking debt and slavery that comes with it.

She mentioned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the downfall of college (Student Debt, Possible Credit Card Debt, etc)

Is it Scripted propaganda? Yes, perhaps. If she were teaching Unscripted ideology, would your classmates lead more successful and fulfilling lives? I'd argue not likely. If Unscripted principles were taught from Kindergarten, I'd feel differently, and that's a whole other subject. Someone should make a private primary school that teaches kids how to be creative and resourceful, and think in terms of value. Anyway...

Statistically, people with college degrees earn more, live healthier, and live longer than those without. That's the average.

The Effect of Educational Attainment on Adult Mortality in the United States*

*I'm having trouble finding any articles correlating level of education to credit card debt. Obviously those who do not attend college will not have student loan debt.

**Another interesting statistic that I can't track down would be the average education level of small business owners in the US

According to Experian, Small Business owners in the US earn 21% more than the average person, with average income of $71,690 (compared to $59,378 of the US population). - http://www.experian.com/whitepapers/BOLStudy_Experian.pdf

The average person WITHOUT a degree is not a business owner. That's the part that seems to be getting missed. What will the vast majority of your classmates do if they do NOT go to college? Which "lane" will they end up in? She's not talking to you (although she doesn't know that).

There's a difference between, "on average, college graduates earn more" and "college is the best thing for @Josh Harmsen". There's way too many variables for anybody to make that conclusion. But, on average, college is probably the best choice for many of your classmates.

She's preaching slowlane to keep people off the sidewalk. In her world, there is no fastlane. In the vast majority of your classmate's world, there is no fastlane.

I think the problem with the statistics she read off were also people that dropped out of high school AND just got a diploma. If you take out the numbers for people who dropped out, the numbers would be higher for people with diplomas.

I'm not sure I follow, but the colleges use a lot of different tactics to skew their success metrics. No question about that!

The propaganda doesn't end in high school. In college there's career fairs, in companies there's 401k presentations, even parents and close friends will try to nudge you in the direction of getting a nice stable job, retirement accounts, etc. But it's not malicious, people are doing their best to educate you given what they know.

The average slowlaner will be better off than the average sidewalker and the average slowlaner with a degree will be better off than the average slowlaner without a degree. Being unscripted is not for everyone and not everyone can make it work; there is no harm in my opinion in 'herding' the sheep in a certain direction, if its with good intentions. Some people have different life goals, for example they'd rather be a nurse and helping people and a degree from a better college will help enable that. Just know that the information was not for you and to take it with a grain of salt as you are much wiser to know better.

Schooling is maybe the best buisness system in the world, brainwash people from a young age and close the sale when they're nearing 20 with a promise of a good life. So uh.......anyone wanna build a college campus? Split profits 50 / 50

Kinda sidebar rant...

...until they get into the real world and discover that the healthcare industry isn't about patient care, but about the maximization of profit while "assembly-lining" patients as fast as possible. Such altruistic expectations are quickly squashed leaving the person who went to college for 4 years and dreaming of idealistic career aspirations very disappointed. Instead they're left with a pile of debt and a career that leaves them unfilled and deep in regret. And by then it's too late... they're in deep and in a career that they "hate" -- not because of the career itself, but because the Scripted system doesn't allow expectations to meet reality.

Like everything in the SCRIPTED realm, real life is a rude awakening, much like the idea that your M-F for 50 years is a cake walk void of any struggle.

I'm in... but only if we can use the university to UNbrainwash these kids and send them out to wreck havoc on the status quo
