1. "Hard work will get you where you want to be in life, and the paycheck to match as you move up the ladder..."

(Same thing with good grades, college, average jobs, whatever. They don't mention the disclaimer: Only if you are working towards a worthy idea or goal. (There is a cap or a limit to your potential when you're working for someone else's idea, goals and dreams.)

.....

2. Going back to the school, college and good grades part I just mentioned above..

A degree does not improve your chances of success, only you do. The only value of it, is that it's a push for some people to feel like they have a reason to take on more responsibility or a higher paying, more demanding, company position. We live in a golden age of information, there is no reason at all you can't absorb the knowledge needed to be successful. College is a simply a way of paying someone else to do the research and explaining it all to you. (That laziness comes with a hefty price tag)

Often people miss out on one of the best learning tools in the world: Experience. Anyone can read or be taught something, but it takes real trial and error to fully understand something and master it.

If you truly DESIRE with all your heart to be the person you want to be, accomplish something, or become the best in your line of work, there is no substitute for following through with passion, motivation and a relentless commitment to grow and learn.

Your average college student really doesn't care about learning, more or less they focus on getting through. The struggle is celebrated by partying and drinking all night. See the perspective here..

I don't consider that living forever, but... a lot of theorists are predicting we will have cellular replication and telomere length problems sorted out within the next hundred years, allowing us to at least live 1000 years. There's a good chance that all of us in our 20's may live to be 1000.

Whoa if this happens we have all the more reason to go fastlane. I want to live a thousand years and enjoy it too!
See you guys in a millennium!

Would be good to live to 1000.
But look at you just now, how many bones have you broken? Scars do you have? Near accidents have you been in?
The inevitability will be that we will likely die from accidents rather than ill health if this becomes the case/future.
I would rather them invest their money on Cancer Research rather than longevity. Far too many people are dying by the second through a disease that should have a cure by now.

"Start a 401(k) and you'll be set for life." I hate to admit it, but once upon a time, I actually believed this drivel. There are a few others, but I suspect they're too controversial even for this crowd.

Cheers,

A classic is "If you learn a trade, you'll always have work." That's not really a lie so much as it's an incomplete statement. The missing phrase that completes the truth is "...but you'll never have money."

One big lie that people believed most in their lives is that being rich is being happy. I also once believed that lie. Now, I know better, being rich and being successful aren't synonymous with each other. Money is a necessity and it may supply most of our needs we can't find inner peace through it.

biggest lie--------- YOU NEED LUCK TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS

PURE BULLSHIT.CONSTANT GAIN AND APPLYING KNOWLEDGE IS THE MAIN THING.

Yes you do need luck, however, luck is only pulled to your side by constantly gaining and applying new knowledge in a ever-changing world.

For me it is that we humans are striving and eventually will living in a world with equality, like equality is some kind of natural and right state of human society. The opposite could not be more true and this would not be more wrong, throughout history inequality dominated 99% of the time while equality is only a matter of dream that existed on some philosopher's mind. The book zero to one had a section just on this issue and Peter told us that the truth of the world is the 80/20 rule, and we will always be dominated to follow this rule, no matter how hard we try to make things fair and equal.

"The riches are in the niches."

Complete lie. I did big money ONLY after I went after big markets.

Honestly, these days it feels like every single thing I was taught is a lie - I basically had to revise everything.
If I had to pick one, right now, it would be "your obsessing over things is bad, you need balance". Oh, I think this held me back years.
You don't need balance, you need to channel the obsession and the guts to go all the way without making excuses like "you need balance".

-The good die young.
So that would make me a bad person? The world is full of old hatters?

-The devil is in the details.
You can detail yourself right to the grave and still be nowhere. Just get after it, JUST DO IT.

-Your friends will help you go far.
Correction, the right friends will help you go far, support not cynics.

-Stop and smell the rosses.
Don't think so, not yet, GET THE ICE CREAM.

1) Experience countable in years is the only mechanism for success.

What really frustrates me is just how widespread that lie is being spread. Its all I heard for the first few years of my career, amd through school. Go to university, get a degree with debt, work and when youre 35-50 you'll start living the life. Even the other day, I sat in a course which i need for part of my business acreditation. Whereas i saw it as a tool to add to my business, others saw it as an enabler to add to their boss' business because they were told "you need this to work for me", and get a little more change along the way. The lecturer constantly referred to "ask your boss" and how we would " never need to know" how certain things work. Nice guy but there was a clear tone that rather than adding to our personal value, his idea of the course was to tick a box and consign the participants to a life long employment. Worse still, the 20 or so others were happy to sit there and accept that and smile about it.

2) you'll be lucky to get near to a 6 figure salary and if you ever do, you've made it.

Money is in abundance and the only limit is the ugly brute staring you in the mirror every day telling you "you should be grateful". I got to a good salary, it is still just that. A salary. Bored days infront of a computer, arguing about someone else's money, whilst using my time, so I can enjoy my odd day off. I'm surrounded by people who think that having the odd day off, a few thousand in the bank, making a few thousand from their stock and retirement accounts and a series of mortgaged houses that will be paid off when they reach 65 constitutes making it.

I grew up in a place where earning 40k and having a 3 bedroom house and a leased car is doing well, and it's taught me that people don't have to be taught how to make money, or even whatever they want out of themselves; They just need to be taught to know that they can.

"Being an inventor is not a profession. You can't make money with it. Everything is already invented. If you really want to get rich, you need to become a lawyer or dentist" - my grandfather to 8 yo me, when I told him I want to become an inventor.

Just wondering where I'd be today, If I hadn't shared my aspiration with him back then.

You'll get rich by not going into debt and putting 10% of every paycheck into a mutual fund.

Ha Ha, well the way the stock market has been, this is becoming more a possibility!!

Rub a man's nose in it now, but once you realize it's impossible to make money in options, I'll have the last laugh! :)

Can you elaborate on this?
