Solid show this weekend. Wish that there could have been more in-depth discussion about how they turned the customer service and employee happiness credos into improved bottom line. Also would have appreciated more discussion about how turning from a commission-based sales incentive to "no haggle" impacted

* Their bottom line (so did they switch from a model maximizing their per-unit revenue to a "let's lower our margin but make it up in volume" approach?)
* Sales associate retention and happiness

►►SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT FOR SATURDAY, February 21, 2015◄◄

Andrew Lee and Jack Tomczak from Twin Cities News Talk's Up and At 'Em morning show with Dylan Salisbury take over Mind Your Business this upcoming weekend, with a clip from their morning show discussing the article "6 Harsh Truths That Will Make You A Better Person"

http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-harsh-truths-that-will-make-you-better-person/

Quit your job. Start your life.™ Mind Your Business, Saturdays at 12PM Central on Twin Cities News Talk
Also, I read the above linked article. Spot on, spot on. Makes me wonder why having a realistic and honest conversation with kids is considered being "mean" in this day and age.

The way this segment plays out (that you will hear on Saturday), Jack and Andrew were discussing this article with their young, Millenial assistant. He didn't get what they were trying to communicate, but it will resonate with nearly everyone that is a fan of the Millionaire Fast Lane. I've not run a segment like this before (literally someone else's work) but because Andrew is our producer, and because the content was awesome, I thought it would really resonate with you all.

And, since I am sitting in Scottsdale this week soaking up some sunshine, it was the perfect week to use this material. :)

I think the whole interview was a little "softer" than I would have preferred. Still an amazing story, but the discussion could have been less surface and more hard hitting, more aggressive and insightful, and less salesy. Not only are we still learning, but it almost has as much to do with the degree that the interviewee is at ease. People get stressed out about having a microphone in their face. New experience. I think if we ever take the show live (plan is to secure national advertising and then stream it live across the country through iHeart/ClearChannel affiliates) I think we would sharpen up a bit. Less scripted, more spontaneous.

If Clear Channel monetizes this, we will keep doing it for a while. If they don't, my interest will fade. So, if you like the show... grab 'em while you can. Nothing eminent... it's just that I have a ton of shit going on in 2015 including Rachel getting married, a move to the coast, and some crazy business expansion. We're talking about getting some studio quality equipment that I could use on the road (Blue Yeti microphone, etc...) but it's not as much a function of the equipment as it is the time factor. We'll see. The ratings are still at the top of the charts, and it is fun to do but everything has to have a reason. For today, you all are my reason.

Quick show today.

I loved what the hosts were saying: It was harsh but necessarily and brutally honest. I'm going to play this for my teenager.

I will say that none of this surprises me but the one guy's response on the show (Andy?) was pretty typical of the mindset that probably 95% of the country has.

Was this the last show for a while? You did close with, "If we never do another show....."

Cheers!

Good show, read the article and really liked that. Good stuff. The Alec Baldwin scene is solid, never saw that before.
The big premise of the show really is exactly TMF 's premise- the world only cares what it gets from you. Provide value to it in order to get what you want.
Interesting points about the cognitive/psych biases, like pretending that self-improvement would be "seling-out" who you are. I've heard that one quite a few times.

Nothing eminent... it's just that I have a ton of shit going on in 2015 including Rachel getting married...

So you were satisfied with the fiance after you put him through the ringer?;)

It might be spotty over the next few months as I have a crazy life schedule coming up. However, I think I will do another show this Saturday. I was planning on attending the forum's conference in March, and speaking about a life skill called the OODA loop. The timing for me to be in Scottsdale didn't work out, so I won't be able to attend this year. I think I will deliver to you through the podcast the speech I was planning to give at the conference on the OODA loop.

OODA stands for :
  • Observe
  • Orient
  • Decide
  • Act
We will consider the OODA strategy from the vantage point of an intended victim in an emergency situation such as the tragedy that unfolded in a movie theater in July 2012 in Aurora, Colorado. However, the same reoccurring cycle of observe-orient-decide-act is applicable to most emergencies. Your ability to process through this cycle intentionally, and more rapidly than someone that might intend to do you harm may assist you in successfully navigating yourself or others out of harms way. U.S. Air Force Colonel John Boyd developed the concept to explain how to direct one’s energies to defeat an adversary and survive.

I am focused on using the OODA loop in an emergency/traumatic situation where instincts and training need to take the place of indecision... but the same life skills that keep you alive using the OODA loop are super applicable to business strategy, competition, and decision making for business.

So... tune in next Saturday at noon (central time) to the Mind Your Business show. It just might save your life.

Oh wow, that would be an amazing show! I wonder about things like this, so it would be great to have some thoughts in-mind, just in case. It's interesting to think how they could be applied to a business situation too.

You can train yourself to Observe. At first it is a game. With practice, it becomes intuitive. It's applicable to business, to spotting needs, and ultimately to life. It is the first phase of the OODA loop we will talk about on Saturday.

Heading into the studio right now to record this week's show. I have a heavy heart about this show, as I am leaning into the memory of what happened in Aurora, Colorado in 2012 to remind people what is at stake. I hope you listen Saturday, and then I hope you share Saturday's show with your friends and family members. - Dave

My brother just called me to tell me they were running commercials in the Minneapolis/St. Paul market during the Rush Limbaugh show for the Mind Your Business podcast. I had no idea! That's awesome.

Hey man, great idea about OODA loops. This is a GREAT lesson for anyone to learn in any situation, not just emergency. For those that don't know, it was originally developed by and for fighter pilots.

I've been using and teaching OODA loops for years. I first got into the concept when I started my training in Emergency Medicine, where it is eminently practical. Since then I've tried to teach them to my med students, residents and mid-levels. It's saved my patient's butts many times. Looking forward to the show.

Also, I understand about life getting in the way. I would be concerned about spacing out the podcasts too much as you've got a nice little momentum going here, but I totally understand.

Good show! Any way of getting the OODA loops and situational awareness into everyone's minds is a good thing.

As someone that has taught it before, what did you think of my down and dirty summary of it? I found it challenging to squeeze it in to the short time constraints of a podcast. As such, I hope people who were not familiar with it... get it.

I thought that you did a solid job. For those who haven't heard of it before, the concept can be confusing.

I always have an advantage because my students all have a familiar situation: the sick patient rolling into the ER. My first and constantly reiterated admonition is "Look at the patient. What's different about their "pattern.""

I finally got around to listening to the podcast. Neat stuff man. Question though, I left a review on iTunes and it's not showing up??? Is there a lag time?

Have you ever thought about doing an episode responding to questions regarding incorporation? I think that's one of the most common questions fresh entrepreneurs have when starting out.

1. What is an LLC, C-corp, S-corp, sole proprietorship, and which is best for me?
2. Should I incorporate now or wait for some consistent sales?
3. Where is the best place to go for incorporation?
4. What is an EIN and why do I need it?
5. There are a million upsells on this incorporation website that I'm on, which ones are actually necessary?
6. This whole process seems to have a ton of steps and I feel overwhelmed. Can you distill it down to 5 simple steps?

I wasn't familiar with the concept, and I thought the show was really awesome. You did a great job of explaining it in a condensed time-frame. One of my favorite parts was the example of going into a convenience store and noticing things that might be out of the ordinary. It was SUCH a great example, because everyone has gone into a convenience store, but probably, very few have been as aware as they should be. I have to admit, I'm not nearly as observant as I'd like to be, but it offered a concrete method for doing better.

1. Thanks for the review. Not sure on the lag time, but I appreciate it none the less (unless you said we suck, in which case...)

2. I like the idea above. It gets back to useful content. Might do this in one of the upcoming weeks. Awesome idea.

I loved The OODA Loop stuff. I have always Been like that. In any given situation. I can for the most part Sense peoples emotions and predict how things play out. it's proven helpful on many occasions. Life threatening and just personal. I'm Ridiculously Observant, And Meticulous About my exit strategy. I usually keep that stuff to myself because people take it the wrong way. But in the world we live in today. I see this becoming common practice.
Great stuff Vigilante!
