A genuine question regarding lead generation, is word of mouth KING?

Alright let me get straight to it.

Exactly 6 months ago, I taught myself programming from nothing to the level where I am now. (Engineering background helped a lot, and I'm still in my senior year).

I landed 3 clients, and just yesterday I broke the 1k USD mark, which is a huge milestone for me.

But, now I am back at the same point where I cannot generate leads for myself.
I landed my first 2 clients by offering to help them for free, one liked my work paid 500 euros, the other was too busy to complete the project (I still used it as portfolio project anyway).
The third was a referral from my first client who paid me, and I broke the 1k usd mark with him.

Another one of my online friends saw my work, and by a stroke of luck he told me that his boss want's to revamp his website, I showed him my portfolio, offered 2k, and he accepted. Still, nothing is real yet since he told me we'll get in started in 2 weeks.

But even if I complete the work, I still cannot get leads in a systematic reliable way, and while waiting 2 weeks for the upcoming client, I kept challenging myself to land one by myself, and so far, I didn't even contact a single person, I simply don't know where or how I can find leads. ( I really want to get rejected, I really do! It's just that I can't find anyone to contact yet)

Which got me thinking, if I was going to hire a window cleaner or an electrician, I'd ask my relatives or friends if they know someone, I wouldn't go on google searching for an electrician.
Can I create a lead generation system using word of mouth only? If not, how do I reach people who'd genuinely need my help? Maybe I am asking the wrong questions, but that's why I'm here at the fastlane forum, to always learn from the better!


If it doesn't break any rules, I'll list what I've done in the past 6 months. (in a chronological order) I'd love some feedback too if you can, is what I am doing even good?
