I turned over the other night and saw my girlfriend sleeping.

When you're sleeping there's no concept of time.

And if you don't have a dream there's no concept of anything.

It made me think of death. Just nothingness, like a dreamless sleep, but forever.

"Memento mori" has become a cliche, but I think a lot of anything good that has come from my life has come from moments like these.

It is easy to take for granted the simple gift of being alive.

I did nothing to deserve being born.
I did nothing to deserve being given the gift of seeing a sunrise.
I did nothing to deserve the thousands of years of innovation and sacrifice of the people that built the civilization I live in.
I did nothing to deserve every single breath in life I've taken.

Every single moment and every single breath I take is something I did absolutely nothing to deserve.

If I have ever been entitled, or ungrateful, it was absolutely a mistake.

I owe 100% of my life to whatever gave me life, whether it was God, chance, etc.

I am not here to "be free".

I am not here to "prove" anything.

I am not here to consume. Seeing a sunrise and taking a breath is enough consumption for me to be thankful.

I am here to give thanks for the wonderful gift of life by using every second I am blessed with to work with the singular purpose of developing into the greatest version of myself and seeking greatness in everything I touch, as a thanks to the work of God and the work and sacrifice of people that have made my life possible, and even comfortable.

When I return my life and my body to what or whoever gave it to me, I want to be proud of what I did with it, and say that I did every possible thing I could do to make it worthwhile.

I won't care how much free time I had, or how comfortable I was. I will only care that I used my time well and that I used my life to do something objectively good. I was given a gift worth infinitely more than anything I could ever give in return.

Above all, I am thankful. And I will remain thankful regardless of my circumstances. I have so much, but I know that if I lost it all, I would still appreciate just waking up in the morning.

I am happy to work. I am happy to "struggle". I am happy to fail and learn all of life's lessons. I am happy for all of it because I know how lucky I am to get a chance to experience any of it at all.

I promise there is not a single thing that can happen to me that will make me ungrateful other than ignorance. I could lose my entire business. I could lose my legs tomorrow. All of those things are just icing on a cake that I didn't pay for. I have already experienced and enjoyed so much more than I have ever earned.

Thanks, great refreshening post.
Sometimes you get too caught up in your current situation to stop and think about how lucky you are to be able to experience it all.
And thinking about what you went through , and others went through to get here

And I second the purpose of becoming the greatest version of yourself. Just the thought of it attracts me

Beautiful.
Life is the most precious gift we have been given. It's not ours forever, eventually it will be taken away.

But while we're still here, let's do as much good as we can.
While we still can.

Thank you @Johnny boy ! What a great and simple post from you. I tend to build mazes in my head and over-complicate things so I'm gonna pin this link as a reminder. Life is beautiful and simple if we choose to understand that it is.

Excellent post, marked GOLD, almost missed it.

Every morning I wake up feeling terribly grateful for some of the simpliest things... hot water, cold drinking water, tasty food, being surrounded by beautiful nature, the smell of fresh cut grass, and sound of running water...

Life truly is a gift and miracle from the universe/nature.

There's a whole lot of people out there that are not healthy or happy. There are so many things to be thankful for.

The biggest breakthroughs in my life happened when I finally understood what a human being is, what good or bad really is and what the purpose of life is.

I am not here to "be free".

I am not here to "prove" anything.

great article. Your writings are often very deep and filled with wisdom. Thank you for this very refreshing article. I really liked.

We really should have full gratitude for the mere fact that we live. .the best, most precious things (time, love, health, nature...) in life are free and nothing can buy them so why not be grateful for all those things that are given to us for free? .I think it would be really very ungrateful not to do so, so let's have gratitude and enjoy every moment that is offered for free, as if it were our last. .because while you're living, right now, there's someone stuck in a hospital bed fighting to live and looking for the same opportunity you have. .before I didn't understand all these things but quite recently (a little while ago) I came to understand that simply being alive is an immense wealth, a great opportunity that life has given us. So live in the present moment and enjoy every passing second.
.Bravo for your article, I will often read it to refresh.

I am not here to "be free".

“You call yourself free? Let me hear your ruling thoughts, and not that you have escaped bondage. Are you one who deserved to escape from it? There are many who threw away their only worth when they threw away their servitude. Free from what? Why should Zarathustra care? Your eyes should answer plainly: free for what?

Thank you so much for this, it's helped me re-set my gratitude for life. Something I've been so good with over the last few years but admittedly in recent months had let seep away.

Gratitude and perspective are such powerful tools for life. When you realise that nothing about your life really matters in the grand context of the Universe, it gives you the freedom and confidence to just go out there an live, fail, succeed, and to just enjoy doing it all, good and bad!

Brilliant post and a great reminder to wake up to today. Stopping to think, reflect, and reframe my failures as part of the human experience is oddly calming for me.

So true, great post.
A few days ago, there was a major wind storm in my area. My dad's largest grain bin got crushed and we didn't have electricity for 3 days. It's funny how we take things like electricity for granted when we walk into a room and flip on a switch.

I hope I can tap into that feeling one day.

Everything just feels like one cruel and elaborate practical joke. Being dead just seems so many times more appealing than
  • having to breathe air that feels like there is zero oxygen in it
  • being lonely all the time
  • struggling and investing time and energy without getting any rewards
  • hopes and dreams being shattered every single time
No thanks.

Very interesting post. Truly eye opening. We tend to forget about these little moments of realization and slip back into our daily hectic routine, so these reminders serve as a great...well..reminder, to live better! There is this momento mori calendar I saw the other day that keeps track of the number of weeks left of your life (assuming you live an average of 80 years). It's really awe-inspiring to look at.
