Just wanted to share an encounter I had recently for those that may benefit from it.
So a couple of weeks ago we sent our product to an athlete for them to evaluate. This person was very complimentary and nice enough to thank us on social media. A quick read through the comments was an overall positive vibe until I reached one particular comment that gave me pause. “great, the Rich getting Richer”
At first it didn’t make sense to me, I thought, did he comment on the wrong thread? Then it sank it, he was angry that someone that can easily afford 'Widget A' was receiving 'Widget A' for free, and he, WHO DESERVES a break, is not getting anything for free.
The more I thought about it, I realized MANY people have this same way of thinking.
In fact I used to have the same thoughts. Why do celebs get gift bags of high end items? Why do athletes get free stuff? Why do police officers get free coffee? Why does anyone but me get anything for free?
This was all before my mindset shift and for those of you that haven’t made that leap yet it is simple.
IT IS ALL ABOUT VALUE.
While this person did not give me a dime, they gave me a small piece of their time. That time has value, their input has value, and the exposure has value.
I provided this person with something that they found useful which of course has value.
That exchange to the untrained eye may look like a gift to an assumed undeserving party. But in fact tremendous value has been transferred.
The celeb and free gift bag? The celeb provides greater exposure than you can buy with money.
Same goes for the athlete and exposure to others in that sport.
The police officer and coffee? That officer provides safety and security.
So next time you have a thought about deserving something more than another party, ask yourself, Do I provide enough value to others to deserve them transferring value to me?
