Wow, and I thought writing a book was hard? This editing process is a real bear!!! Still going through that process ... good news, got the book down to about 115,000 words which is now workable and in a more normal range for a business book ...

I've hired the layout-typesetter and cover design is underway! The first editor had some real positive things to say so I am encouraged. Look out GET RICH SLOW -- the GET RICH SLOW anti-guru is coming!!

Great news, it's awesome to see the progress and know that hey I knew "that guy" before the book came out ;)

Now back to working on my "story", which I hope to one day turn into a book/movie deal, of course based on real events and others whose path I hope to follow such as those who made the spiritual/financial trek from Chicago to Phoenix :coolgleamA:

Remember the first one is just preparation for the second which will go twice as fast!!!

It is appreciated the communicated steps you go through and the set backs, hardships etc - gives insight into the process.

Hey, so you fired your designer I read on a different thread I believe and so have you hired a new one yet? and if so how is the cover design progress coming along??

And also, is it still set to come out around spring 2010 as stated on the millionaire fastlane dot com which would technically be in the next month or so?

If not or if its being pushed back could you give us a few updates!! I look forward to reading it hopefully soon.

:yourock:

Yup, I hired a new designer -- one that has a great track record and exclusively does book covers. We are midstream in that design process. When the cover is finished Ill be able to firm up an availability date/release date/publication date because then it goes to layout (or typesetting as they call it).

Yikes, even after all my edits (got the book <120,000 words) all my interior layout people are telling me it is still > 400 pages. Looks like I gotta go back and do more cutting ... and with each cut, I endanger the entire theme ... like trying to make an automobile lighter by removing the engine.

=(

When will it end!!!!?!? :pissed:Ugh!

It's your book dude; if you feel like it needs to be 400+ pages, keep it that way!
Personally, for me, the more info I can read from you the better. :D

Hahaha split it into TWO books for double the profit! :p

I understand that logic -- but to me, that would be like trying to sell a car without a transmission or an engine ... they both need to be TOGETHER.

Why can't they just cut the pages larger? Books come in all sizes.

Yea but business/finance/self-help books come in standard 6X9 or smaller. It shouldn't look like a college text-book -- a big turn off.

If their printing press can't handle a larger sized book and they're trying to sell you into something that fits on their press, I'd look for someone with a larger press. I'm not sure of the specifics of your situation but generally what happens in this industry is that the company that gets the order either prints it themselves, or has it quoted amongst several other producers and then naturally takes the lowest quote. Each producer has it's own set of limitations. I'm not sure exactly if this is a factor, but it's good to know none the less.

Both Trump and Kiyosaki have been very successful writing books that I would call "bathroom reading"-- they contain short, concise chapters that can be read at one "sitting" (sorry).

Since you have often extolled the virtues of your learning at Toilet U, I'm wondering if you've used this approach to your book, MJ?

My other question would be if you've hired a good editor to give you feedback. Having been a writer for many years, I can tell you that a good editor is the best-- and worst-- thing in a writer's life.

Worst, b/c it's often IMPOSSIBLE to see your mistakes/problems, and an editor bringing them up only makes it harder to see them!

Best, b/c a good/great editor can take something good-- and make it something that's a real page-turner-- and will be more readable/sell lots more copies/make WAAAAAY more money.

Perhaps even more important: They can do things that make your material more understandable-- that have a better "take away".

Hardest thing is to find a great editor (needs to have specific experience in this type of book)

Second hardest thing is to take their advice! :)

-Russ H.

PS I am reminded of the saying that a doctor who treats himself has a fool for a patient. Same goes for an author who does not have a good "outside opinion"/editor.

I'm anxious to read it.

I'm thinking maybe you and I could sit down with an oragami specialist and do a pop-up book version with the highlights, now there is a bathroom book for ya.

Yes, PM me your name/address and your choice of restaurant -- it needs to be a chain of some sort (like Chile's or Olive Garden) ... congrats!
