Update for 17/8/2020- 23/8/2020
Last Thursday, I caved in to join a family getaway to a nice hilltop place in Penang with NO Internet.
Most folks cry and scream about zero Wifi, but I remembered how old-school copywriters used to seclude themselves and continue writing killer copy, even after their heydays were supposedly over.

So I packed some emails and books to study and read...and somehow finished up LOTS of overdue reading.

And yes, watching greenery, flowers, monkeys on Penang Hill is really soothing to your eyes.

Somehow, the getaway makes me wonder if I should have a new Fastlane dream: to buy me one of those getaway places in nature. It's not impossible in Malaysia-in some secluded areas, you can even get the entire land FOR FREE, as long you pay for renovation, plumbing, electricity out of your pocket (which is the nightmare)

So I guess I found experienced a GREAT way to raise productivity: Go hobo in a place with as little tech or modern distractions as possible.

Too bad I still need Internet to do market research for copy though...otherwise I'd be happy to ditch it.

Oddly, in that nature getaway, I slept as late as 12AM+, but could wake up as early as 5.30-6AM, to catch sunrise and daylight transition! Maybe it's the natural air at work?

Ben Settle's Copywriting Grab Bag-Read till Chapter 24 (friend shared it with me...Ben no longer offers it, as his regular email newsletters and some products like Breakneck Content may have better nuggets on copywriting)

Tej Dosa (found some of his email newsletters floating in the Internet...pretty good on general business lessons. He also has a 6-Figures Promotions product, but I haven't tried it yet)

TMF - Read 6-8 chapters (how long have I NOT read it)

A Mind for Numbers-Read 5 chapters (Realised I BROKE many of its suggested math-learning rules for my current Finance degree...)

Thanks for asking. Similar to this week, I was trying to change how I do some things and was procastinating about it, looking for loopholes in my rules. Hope I've dealt with that now.

Ah nice. When it comes to learning how to learn, I can also recommend Scott Young.

Thanks for the recommend! I see he has written the book Ultralearning.
Odd that it's the first time I heard of it.
I'll check it out!

Loopholes in the rules?
Just things like: "Since I'm working on new ways to do things for an extended period of time, the old ways don't apply anymore and I can do what I want".

Just things like: "Since I'm working on new ways to do things for an extended period of time, the old ways don't apply anymore and I can do what I want".
Oh, I see.
I think that no matter what old or new ways we want to do or toss away, we need to understand just because something is 'old'...it doesn't mean its bad.

Example?

Reading (good) copywriting books.
Some folks might say real-life clients give you better experience.
Others say the classics are old-fashioned.

So, burn the copywriting books once you get the first few copywriting clients?

For me though, I've found that doing copywriting jobs AND reading copywriting books (like Halbert Method III and Breakthrough Advertising) enables me to learn something new each time, even from a regularly-read book.

There's some mysterious beauty in working hard at a craft, and then going back to the learning materials and finding new lessons to interpret from.

Another example?
Mutual funds.

They have been touted as Slowlane investments, but I've started putting in some extra dollars in them, and reaped some good NAV appreciations when the stock market picked up again after the first C0VlD-19 outbreaks.

They don't earn millions, but they put me in the green, at least.

In fact, in UNSCRIPTED , MJ even recommends mutual funds as good picks for the Paycheck Pot...as long as you can filter out those with costly management fees, and your investment principal isn't capped by a 9-5 job income.

On investments though, I'm hearing that the regular indices like Dow Jones may be seriously F*cking up their diversification features by taking on one too many tech companies to carry the game...me thinks I'd have to 'design my own indices' by picking my own stocks.

Good point. Finding the right strategy to do things can be hard, because most of the time there can be several reasons why you don't get results. Things are seldomly monocausal. So just because you're failing, doesn't mean all you're doing is garbage. There might be just one single thing that you're doing wrong that you haven't even thought about.
This of course, is what makes many things in life hard in the first place.

Wake up 8-9.30 AM DAILY

NOT MET for Mon, Tues and Thurs (work up as late as 11AM!)

I realised I found those days hard to wake up to because I had to wake up to some HATED university projects. While thank goodness those projects are done, I'm currently planning HOW MUCH prior content I'll have to create for subsequent projects (even for group assignments!)

Sleep around 11 PM-12.30 AM DAILY
NOT MET for Mon (slept at 12.40am)

For some reasons, I feel I hate going to bed these days, even though I can keep reasonable hours.
I know sleeping is needed for rest and recuperation, but still, there's an inner disgust for sleeping as a bloody boring exercise.
So, these days I just go to bed to simply 'get over it'.

I haven't found any solution to this feeling from my usual reads like Atomic Habits, so I'm left in the limbo on this...

-For Bible study habits:
I found a great YouTube channel called 'Wretched' by Todd Friel, which actually discusses lots of Christian pain-points in bite sizes (and Ben Settle-ish attitude) and following closely with the Holy Writ. Have been watching the regular episodes a lot more often.

His marketing for his side products is also one of a kind...worth a study.
No 'give me money for salvation' kind of thing, but something close to a Dollar Shave Club kind of thing.

-Remind me again to NEVER discuss or put my mind on politics-even for my country.
We had a state election, and I somehow dropped my guard to listen and talk in some WhatsApp groups when the election-mood was heavy.

That cost me lots of time and energy, and sent me into a day-long depression and angry spiel.

That's not to say one shouldn't vote...but people are going to talk a lot of rubbish that doesn't make sense, and just not worth listening to at the cost of your sanity and intelligence.

I noticed I spent more time watching Wretched TV vids than my own personal Bible study.

Don't get me wrong...the vids and their lessons taught me lots of things, but it's about as bad as watching entrepreneur video courses and thinking you did 'business'

I guess I'll have to break down this habit into sub-habits...maybe something like 3 prayer journals a week, 1 daily Bible read, X no. of good sermons to watch online?

Unfortunately, many Christians just listen to Sunday sermons, and think that alone makes them true Christians

I managed to nab Nate Schmidt's 6M6F course offered at $99...it had something that very few online courses touch on: time management. As in knowing what to do when you are still figuring out the initial online services or ecom stuff in the gap-times.

Somehow it discusses starting online business by offering services first, before evolving into more product-based systems...which must have been iterated on TFLF quite a number of times in the last few days.

Will spend some time on it this new week.

Daily Copywriting practice
Done all days.

For the next few weeks to come, I'll set a target habit of doing at least 4 copywriting practice rounds a week.
I'll read sales material on a daily basis though...that's for more active writing of a sales email or even a few bullets or paragraphs of copy.

For my freelancing gigs, even though I haven't taken in any new clients, I'm still getting job invites on Upwork...I guess my profile's optimisation went pretty well. But most of the invites are for jobs like content blogging, something that I'm not too keen with.

Yet, I have to set aside a lot my time in the next few weeks...I've talked about my Integrative Biz Practices unit in college that has a group assignment that consists of a lot of reluctant and un-innovative members that need a spanking:

Me thinks either I'll have to spend more time filtering and proofreading, or I'll write MY OWN business plan report, submit it early and mark everyone zero on the peer review. For some reasons, the second route feels evilly pleasurable, despite the fact that it'll result in a shitstorm with the unwary members.

Read a few chapters of a book a week
Some pages off Cal Newport's book 'How to become a Straight-A student' to read his chapter on writing college essays-I had to do a reflective essay for a class.

He needs to update his material with discussions on dealing with group assignments though...I guess when he first wrote the book, college was still all about your individual effort

Read the options chapter on A.R. Morton's 'Stop Being Poor', which I nabbed off a Ben Settle promo.
Finally could understand puts and calls after my college Derivatives 1 unit kicked in lol...

Vacation from 19 - 29 October
Fell out of rhythm and didn't get anything done, even though I had planned to continue working and to maintain habits.

Wow. I Just got an interesting view of a sliver of @ZF Lee 's life. I didn't realize you were in college. Your other posts strike me as mature, I thought you were older.

First off, congrats to you @bornoim for showing the consistency to be transparent in this thread.

Questions for you both. I don't feel like I saw a lot of improvement here. Maybe I'm wrong. Is this practice helping you? What have you learned about yourself by posting in this thread? Have any of your goals or thoughts about this project changed since you started it? If not, should they?

My main purpose for doing this practice, is to ensure I can keep consistent with vital habits like copywriting practice and even Bible reading...which are naturally very boring for people to stick with.

I've noticed that in these COVID-times, even simple habits have become more difficult to get through, due to the isolation or the winds of the times haha. This habits tracking project at least keeps me on my toes.

If there's one thing I learned...it is that even top achievers can fail big if their habits or routines fall to pieces. That applies to simple stuff like eating or sleeping properly.

For example, if I slept really late, past 12.30AM, multiple days in a row, the rest of my habits would really suffer...I would end up networking with less people, read less books and work on projects or meetings slower.

That isn't too different from business systems....a late email or follow-up call to a client can totally destroy the deal. One wrong screw in a machine or a wrong term in a sales letter could destroy a business' production or reputation.

And yeah, my goals and habits to track have changed throughout this time.
The habits I track change and adapt with my priorities.

I think I used to track what kinds of email content I read, and whether I cooked for the day (I wanted to cook more often, instead of burning cash on eating takeaways unhealthily). Then other more important habits like meeting new people and building R-programming projects came in, and I prioritized those until greater needs arose.

Even recently, I had to slow down my copywriting studies because I had a capstone college project to deal with for the next 3 weeks...it needed MORE of my attention because apparently, third-year group members need as much spoon-feeding as a kindergartener.

What I do need to do more often here, is to share my learnings/reflections from doing the habits e.g. what I learned from doing XXX habit for the week. If I'm not learning new stuff even from daily habits, then it might not be worth doing the habit in the first place.

It's more interesting that I went to college because parents pushed me into it...so I spent my first few months on here ranting shit-and-hell about how college was garbage.

But after spending more time studying, I've found that you can meet with professors with decent industry experience, and you can even polish your research methods and test ideas in a more logical manner.

For instance, I could never grasp how the banking system worked in tandem to wealth, or how shorts, options and derivatives worked to keep the entire financial industry afloat...regular blogs and books just couldn't explain them well for me. Somehow, having some old Financial profs and an organised syllabus helped give me some lingo to understand at least the basics of the financials.

The only horrible thing that ruins the college experience is people....college kids have somehow become lazier, more cowardly and even rebellious until the college system caved in. In my first and second year, the professors really pushed everyone to perform. But these days, they've let everyone slide away into mediocrity...

Normally, I would tell folks to go for college as long you can handle the cost, and if it's for a decent field like Law, STEM, Finance or Medicine. But in light of these dark days, I'd say go grab a bunch of Udemy courses, learn a side hustle and start from there.

ZF Lee and me also wrote a bit about our experience on the last page.
Maybe I'm not improving much, but then lots of people who don't do this kind of tracking/posting aren't improving much either heh.
Overall I really don't know how useful this practice is in the longterm, but it's not a big hassle for me to do, so I don't see any reason to stop for now.
My goals or at least my ideas of how to do things are constantly changing, but that's mostly independent from the way I track things here.

I've actually started using counters (with rewards attached if I have say, a 50 day streak) though, which I think helped my consistency a bit. But there are still a lot of interruptions, so I don't feel comfortable posting them here.

What are you using R for? Like statistical market analysis?

Sounds like me. Although recently I've also come to the conclusion that college can be quite good for learning if you have an actual reason and motivation to learn the topics it offers. Having practical experience and a related job, project or hobby helps in that regard I guess.

You can use R for forecasting, predictions and yeah, market analysis.

However, so far I haven’t reatouched market-ish data like stock prices.

I mostly dug into housing affordability, treasury bill spreads and some C0VlD-19 data.

Update from 26/10-1/11/2020 (Mon-Sun)
GOALS
Wake up 8-9.30 AM DAILY

Hopped out of bed within that time on all days

Sleep around 11 PM-12.30 AM DAILY
Went to bed within the time on all days

2X supplement intake a day
MET all days except Sat

Bible/prayer journal
Done all days except Sunday

TAKEAWAYS
Copywriting

If there's one thing I learned...it is that even top achievers can fail big if their habits or routines fall to pieces. That applies to simple stuff like eating or sleeping properly.

Ain't this a self-fulfilling prophecy?

This is the first week I reduced my copywriting practice to just 4 rounds a week from daily practice...but I ended up doing almost no copywriting.

Combo of procrastination, mental F*ckery and whatnot

I guess I'll just have to push my copywriting work back to daily...even a 'break' might just cause the entire routine to collapse.

Copywriting shouldn't be that mind-taxing, as long you have lots of research materials and swipe files to get inspired from...which in my case, I probably need to replenish on.

Networking
- I noticed I haven't networked with new people offline for a looong time...which is bad because I'm actually feeling more comfortable these days isolating myself (it doesn't help that some people around me threw up more toxic behaviour that makes me loathe people extra sometimes)

The least I can do is to hop onto the Zoom meetings that Meetup.com groups have switched to, but I worry they don't have much of a 'free-chat' session after the main talk.

Supplements intake
I noticed I have been taking my supplements on ungodly hours of the day...even as late as 11PM!
I haven't felt any harsh health effects, except for some extra fatigue in the evening from 3-4PM.

I think I'll have to fix my supplements intake to be on specific times (e.g. take vitamins at 9AM and 4PM precisely). That would also help lock in other habits like waking up early.
