This is a pretty good reminder why you shouldn't mix passion with business.
The author is a well-known vegan bodybuilder. A few years ago he co-wrote a New York Times Bestseller "The Plant-Based Athlete." He recently published his solo book, The Impactful Vegan.
Despite all his social media accounts, connections, reputation, etc. his launch failed and now he's jobless and without any career prospects:
Sitting in the car by myself feeling sad as I reflected on what I perceive as a disappointing book launch. I sat there and texted my best friend the following message:
Overall, this book launch has been a big disappointment, and that’s too bad. But, it is what it is, and it’s time for me to focus on other things now.
I know the book is good, and I appreciate all your help for two years getting it ready for this moment. It has just underperformed and that’s all there is to it.
Time for me to invest time and energy into creating income. No job. No career. An underwhelming book launch. Gotta figure out what’s next.
Hi, everyone!
I want to say thank you to those subscribers who are still here (many left during my recent weeks of book promotion).
I know I sent a lot of newsletters about the best and most meaningful book I have ever written, but I'm at a point now where there's not much more I can do to promote the book, so I'm taking a break.
Though it's easier said than done, I'm trying to let go of attachment to the outcome of my book's performance.
What makes it even more challenging is that I don't have a job or career to fall back on.
This is all I've got. And I gave it what I had. And it doesn't appear that it was good enough.
The book may be the best and most meaningful book he's ever written but the market doesn't give a F*ck. There's not enough of a need, the audience is too small, and the book doesn't address what people are truly interested in (looks over ethics). Of course, it's a shame that you can't make good money off a "deep" book but it is what it is.
This reminds me of my old thread:
GOLD! - HOT! - MINDSET - An Important Reminder: It's Not About What You Like
"We do not get to decide what works." - Dane Maxwell "You have a place in the universe. And that place is not to make the universe be what you want. The place is for you to serve. You serve the moment, you raise the moment, you help, you bring love. You never take. You wouldn't even know what...
