Hi Everyone, My name is Aparna; I'm 28 years old doctor based in India, and finally, after one year of lurking in the forum have gathered enough courage to introduce myself, so here we go
I graduated with a medical degree in 2019; I guess this one is obvious as I'm Indian, so that's the only option I had, or that's what we ( me and my family ) believed so
I got a job very quickly and started working; I've been money-blind most of my life, so with the first salary I bought everything I wanted to buy, a new kindle, dresses, earphones and spent it all and I continued this way, I had to write expensive medical exams for which my family paid the fees again ( they have paid for my entire education and I never had any part-time job or anything at all before my first job as a doctor at 26 ) and I was ready to get into surgical training in the UK which is a pretty straightforward path
My life wasn't the best, but it has been pretty comfortable, and I never dreamt about buying Lamborghini, etc. I didn't even know that people set goals to buy such cars
So why does it all change suddenly?
My Horrible FTE
On 7th Jan 2021, I was on rounds with a senior consultant, and because there was no sister/nurse available to give the file to another consultant, I went ahead and came back to round missing one patient
As I joined my senior, some staff came and interrupted him while he was giving me instructions
And that made him mad, and he threatened to rape the other girl and me, in front of everyone, other doctors, staff, patients
I panicked, and I couldn't believe what had just happened as I wasn't ready for it
I came home and didn't say anything about this at home and went to work the next day
I was expecting that at least he would apologize for what he had said but instead, three male doctors, two seniors, and one junior came and started asking me questions after questions trying to harass me even more
I couldn't take it anymore and decided to never work with them again
I cried and cried for months, and I'm still not sure why this happened to me for such a small mistake
Anyways, I learned my lessons
And it is
No one gives a shit, and it's a harsh world
So I decided to change my path, and here is what I've been up to along with my plans :
- I researched as much as I could about alternative paths in medicine and came across Emma Hitt Nichols course and books on freelance medical writing; I've tried freelancing in my free time after work but I never took it seriously, I feel like this would be perfect for me as it is work from home / self-employed kind of hustle,
So I'll try to educate myself about this as much as I can and work on my writing skills to make it a full time/bill-paying gig
- Building a personal brand - I think this has become a requirement if we are to survive in today's economy; I've started to work my Youtube channel and other platforms as well, which I see as a long term goal/journey
I've learned about all the required skills, like video editing, scripting/content creation, etc.
I know I have a lot to learn, and I'm too late for the party, but it's fine
Thank you to the author for writing the best books ever, now I can see the world as it is
I'm hoping to learn as much as possible and am open to feedback/suggestions.
