Your angle is quite unique, about local good. Actually most Singaporean consumers are actually celebrating that more competition is bringing out the best…and that local food providers need to adapt to it.
Most of the rant about immigration here is about PMET jobs. I don’t think we have any choice either, given that we rely MNC so much as a regional hub and they have the bargaining power to hire from all over the world, (and as a matter of preference they would helicopter drop their own nationals over) that if we don’t allow them to do so, they will just locate to our competitors.
I don’t think our culture is hard to integrate. Follow rules. Follow laws and make money. We have our own working style that is more on the prudent, cautious and meticulous side. Survival conscious, likes to win and borderline paranoid personality disorder with hyperpragmatism. Our policies, and local companies business practice reflect that too.
The near term challenges I anticipate is large scale losses associated with AI, automation and outsourcing. Even our own government is betting on JB economic zone. That’s like a white flag move. You don’t even need MOM to issue a work pass or EP to move lose to job to a foreigner. Most jobs are just one zoom away to someone in India or Philippine at 20 percent of the cost.
The long term challenge is that we don’t really have a high barrier industry that we could fall back on, like Samsung, Nvidia or Huawei, TSMC. There are growing trends of more and more countries copying this Singapore, Dubai model.
Just curious, are you still working a 9-5 job or have you escaped the corporate rat race altogether and is working on your own business?
EDIT: I just asked ChatGPT to list the negative effects of the JB-SG SEZ project and it's terrifying af.
