Do you think it is really worthwhile to register the .net, .org, and other extensions of your domain name? Any thoughts?

I never bother and I might be the minority. For $10, some might feel it is worth it. However if I had the .NET and .ORGS of every .COM domain I own, it becomes too pricey. If I was in full development mode of a project, then I'd might do it.

I do not. Lets say I owned slickdeals.com. Do you know how happy I am that someone came along and developed slickdeals.net.

I would be happy if any .com had a .net or .org go huge for someone. There are few things that are easier money.

Well said Kurt, some speed. If someone develops a .NET you sipher business from their efforts via normal consumer behavior.

Good input kurt. I asked a few "un-internet savy" folks what a .NET and a .ORG extension was and they said "What is that?"

The site i posted with the low bounce rate... guess what. a well established forum actively promoted and some brands made it an official outpost for their PR.... all on a .net... well guess what.... i own the .com... daily traffic without doing anything at all.

Exactly! If you are the one building the business.. then buy .net and others... BUT.. if it's a side thing.. only get the .com. ... dang it... now I have a bunch of .nets and .orgs.. oh well.

I would start any website or busniess on .com only! Because most people know that.

From a different standpoint dot org's convey trust, non-profit, charity, giving, community. Certain businesses will benefit from a .org over a .com. Also, from an SEO standpoint you can mix a few .org's into your link building due to this.

While I agree with you to a certain extent, what can typically happen is people domain squat on the .net or .org of your domain adding no real value. You aren't stealing customers from them; they're using your brand name for their profit. Absolute worst case-scenario would be someone putting a porn website on those domains.

At the end of the day, if this is something that you're putting a lot of time and $$$$ into, why not save yourself the headaches and buy them for $15?

If it is a business domain, then I would suggest buying both the .net and .org domains if they are available. Granted, most people will assume your URL has an .com extension but there are some who may not assume this and try either .net or .org.

Also, if your company name contains a word which is commonly misspelled or contains a number in place of a word, then you may want to purchase those domains as well. This may be overkill but let's say your business is called Chicken2Go, you should consider buying chicken2go.com as well as chickentogo.com.

Generic .Net's and .Org's are goldmines for SEO purposes. Not only do I fresh register them when I get a .Com, but I buy them on the resale market too.

Andrew, can you please explain this a bit more?

He means that the type in .net and .org URLs usually rank very high for their type in keywords.

If bio and I are competing to sell "blue widgets" and he's in love with .com's and rolls out bluewidgetstore.com and I buy bluewidgets.org... he's working 3 times as hard to keep up right out of the gate.

Two things:

Mind you, exact match boost is exactly that, exact match. So me having the "s" contributes to that if "blue widgets" is the actual keyword... bluewidgetsstore is retarded also.

Second thing, everything I just said is null and void if no one else is really in the niche... it would just be us and a few others in the top ten, so who cares... go for a brandable name people can come back to and cut out search.

My point is, everything in this thread is on point, but I've made money with exact match .net/org's with affiliate sites.

Brands are built on .COM's ... Rankings can be bought with .ORGs/.NETs.

I've got a question regarding this example.

Let's say you're trying to build a brand. The .com is already taken (as well as the .net and .org) so you settle on GiantBlueWidgets.com for something memorable.

And let's say the major traffic search terms regarding "blue widgets" are:
best blue widgets (150,000 searches / month)
cheap blue widgets (100,000 searches / month)
blue widgets reviews (75,000 searches / month)

Is it possible to set up sites that rank on the first page of Google for the 3 search terms listed above, but have them set up as re-directs to your GiantBlueWidgets.com "brand name" site?

For example could you buy the the domains:
BestBlueWidgets.net
CheapBlueWidgets.org
BlueWidgetsReviews.net
and expect to have them appear on the first page in Google, but have them all as re-directs to your main site? Or would you have to actually create real sites with real SEO efforts in order to rank on the first page and then have them link to your main "brand name" site?

(I think this was a dumb question, now that I re-read it.)

Thanks in advance for your replies.

You need to set up new sites and SEO them. A redirect will only help if people would actually type in that and dot com in the URL bar.

That's what I figured.
Seemed pretty obvious after I re-read it. :)
Thanks.

Hey, another question...

Where do you guys think the the new .CO's are going to fall into this mix in terms of SEO value?

Do you think they will rank up with the .NET's and .ORG's or are they more likely to be in the .BIZ and .INFO tier?

Thanks again.
