As usual dot com has been prominent since 70s/80s to current date

If I had to classify as category:
First Class: dot com
2nd Class: dot net & dot org
3rd Class: io, co, xyz,

Now-A-Days - I see these io, co, xyz, club, academy, - these kinds of domain extensions

Are these extensions for next trends and take over the famous: dot com, dot net, and dot org?

Just like Audio Cassette Walkman back-in-the-day turned into Ipod?

I am not looking for perfect answer. Just seeing a trend here. I maybe wrong but please correct me If I am saying something wrong.
Any thoughts?

In my opinion, .com is always the best option. If anyone types in the URL manually, their first instinct will be businessname.com

However, if your business relies only on links and few people type in the URL, I can see going with a .co or .io domain.

Google's parent company Alphabet uses abc.xyz. Aside from that, I can't think of a convincing reason to use a .xyz domain.

For convention, I'd only use .org for non-profits or other "organizations".

From a technical point of view, it doesnt matter.
And these days a very low percent of people type out a domain name.
Usually they type what they are searching for in google an go from there.
Here is my loose guide to domain choice:
.com: commercial site, saas, company site, online store etc., basically anything which has to do with direct sales.
.org: charity, forum, sport
.net: social, gaming, small ads
.me: personal
.io: data source, API
.biz: company website

For the rest, Im not quite sure.

It depends, a lot of tech and blockchain sites are going for .io, which I like because it's kind of mimics binary.

I like .org for academic and open source stuff.

I'm not against using industry specific endings like .tv or .medi

Plus sometimes having a country specific one like .co.uk is better than a .com

All in all though, whatever you go for, always buy the .com as well.

You're overthinking it.

Just take the one that looks good and is available.

Also, sometimes is just a matter of availability.
To give you an example:
I established my business a few weeks ago and I could not find an available domain with the .com extension or my country's extension.
What was the solution?
I simply purchased a .tech domain since I consider my company a tech company.
Problem solved!

And to add up: if you provide what others are searching for, the extension doesn't matter at all.
I used to have traffic even with my Blogspot domain.
