i'd put them on eBay and let people bid on them

you'll have no ethical qualms since people typed in the price they wanted to pay and you'll probably end up making more anyway

win/win

The only problem I can see with that is you can only have one identical listing running at a time.

I suppose you could list them high with a best offer option.

Well, I don't think you can sell beer on Ebay, but I'd bet it would cause a bidding war.

I could see news services picking up on it and sharing it.

Something to offset all the bad news...

Good call; using the opportunity of outside events of which we have no direct control, and be able to capitalize on them. My brother in law did something similar with hand sanitizer back in 2009 when the swine flu was around. His mistake was not taking it online and only selling local.

I thought about that long time ago, around same time as you January. Then I said to myself, there is nothing wrong with making profit, and take advantage of any product that might run out. But this is not a make up product. It’s something people need, and a lot of old sick people, and poor people will need it. It also will prevent the virus from spreading, and save a lot of people life. Not my style .

Random thought: Using the same model but selling to gov/hospitals would have probably multiplied the profit and also would have placed the masks where they really need to be. Ofc it's like when you think of what you should have said after the conversation happened, lol. :clench:

All business owners seek for opportunities and make a profit. The fine line for me will be when one attempts to profit off human's worry and panic, to hike up prices, I no longer can agree on that way doing business.

My belief about making money - there are opportunities everywhere. But some opportunities I will give a miss.
I fully agree.

I understand that there will always be a lot of people without morals and principles. But just because others are doing, or will do, wrong, it doesn't mean that I will.

I saw the opportunity with Corona early on, and I think a lot of other people did as well, but money is not over everything. Integrity and morals stand above making money off people who are suffering and dying, at least to me.

It's interesting to see people rationalize things, though. Very creative!

No. Not even close.

I am probably known as the biggest capitalist on this forum. NO. This is NOT how it works.

Capitalism is built on win-win value exchanges.

What you are describing here is a Madoffesque view of the the world and business. He wasn’t a capitalist. He was a plunderer.

1. Selling product is kind to you, but it is also being kind to the customer as well.

2. Compassion and understanding are important qualities in a leader.

3. VALUE above everything.

4. Everyone moves up after a transaction.

Your slash and burn linear thinking worldview creates linear thinking socialists.

There is always a place for compassion in business.
Money is not above everything, there is millionaires who pimps, and billionaires who are drug dealers el chapo, and some gang members too, etc.
In order to rise up, you have to rise some people with you, it’s a business not a gang game, or Scarface movie.

A short small story:
Only when thar thread started, when I walked through stores, I had a look on masks. I saw the prizes and began to buy and sell.
I tried to source some more, but I was too late. But in one shop I got a small amount of masks.
I offered them on ebay and sold them.
It was a great expierience in things of entrepreneurship.

I had a case of illness in my family, so I rejected an offer of a forums member to raise that business.

now yesterday a friend of mine, working in an old peoples home said, the lack ... I gave the rest of the masks to them for free.

You can discuss the ethical side controversian,
but from the entrepreneurial side it was soooo interesting for me.
I So directly see the meaning of „think big“:
I tried different marges.
I had the first invest of 300 turn into 500 profit.
Than I got the next 130 into 1000.

When I didn’t invest 130 to make 1000 profit, but had invested 10000.... and so on.

This was a real interesting and satisfying experience.

Hope I didnt bore!

edith: the only bad thing I see is, that I couldn’t provide real value.

In hindsight, this is what I would have done. I would have bought up all the N95 masks. Then I would have held them a few weeks and then sold them only to hospitals or medical institutions at the same price that I paid for them plus shipping and credit card fees.

The reason I came to this conclusion is because we here saw this coming a few weeks prior. But even if a nurse at a hospital thought the same thing, she wouldn't have been able to convince the hospital or their budget to purchase 10000 masks. And she would probably not have the means or forethought to buy them using her own savings, especially not knowing if she would have been reimbursed.

So it takes people like us here to take action. We have the brains and the means, we can use our skills to save people from themselves.

We could have and still can do this with toilet paper, hand sanitizer, etc...

Only 5% markup about and got wrecked. Can’t believe people here praising OP...
OP was charging much more than that.

edit: I guess this guy sold much higher markup in the past though.

I've been thinking about this and have come up with a designer mask that will be popular. Now I just need to seize the means of production!

I didn't buy from China.
I do not import directly from China. My Suppliers (wholesalers) have their own brands under various names here in the USA. I buy products that are already here in the USA. In fact,
a large percentage of my many products I sell, are made in the US.

My supplier is only 4 hours away, by auto.

There is a large segment of the population that are willing to pay for US products.

And, BTW, there are N95 masks made in the USA.
Oh you did not buy from China I see.

yet the people providing this to the government can charge whatever they want?

It depends. I see masks for sale everywhere (Walmart is selling them from multiple suppliers) here in central Texas but that might just be a regional situation. I'm not sure there is a demand any longer. I would do some research on it. All the best.

Hey, million$$$smile. I'm selling masks too but not these ones but Face Shield ones. From the start, I couldn't sell as many masks as I wanted, I've made a lot of mistakes and because of that I was about to close it, so one day I desperately tried to find a solution on the Internet, I've been searching for 4 hours and when I was almost crying I found a topic on a forum where I found an article about selling advises and tips for business. You can check this out too, maybe you will find something useful there too. This article helped me and my business started to be more profitable, I was really looking forward to closing it up but fortunately, I didn't do that.

Nice! You were quick to pull the trigger and got rewarded as a result.

One of my friends lost 70k with N95 masks. He ordered about 100k worth of asks from China but by the time they arrived the price of masks had already gone down significantly. He ended up having to sell them at a big loss.
