Deserve. One of the strongest, most powerful words used in marketing today. Why is it bullshit? Because it is misused to make side walkers feel important enough to need something. "Get the credit you DESERVE" or "Take home the car you DESERVE today!"
To me, if you deserve something, you worked for it and earned it. You took the steps necessary to gain access to whatever it is, and you completed your personal mission to earn it. NOW you deserve it.
In marketing, it's used in such a way that makes Joe the janitor with low income and bad credit feel like he's on top of the world. "I work hard, I DESERVE a new car, even though I don't pay my other bills." Or Dana at the drive thru window DESERVES a "brand new, name brand laptop" just for possessing a minimum wage job, but won't try to improve herself.
Maybe if you deconstruct the word, where "de" has a negating effect on the word "serve," then it would make sense. But that's not how it's intended nor used.
Manipulation seems to be an awesome tool to suck people in and keep them stuck for a long term commitment, but is it worth it for future sales? Sure it is, because there are endless numbers of suckers out there, waiting to feel special. Imagine if it was used for good, instead of creating parasitic debt for unsuspecting victims! What if someone used this powerful word to market something useful, like teaching them about creating real wealth, rather than driving them further away from it? Wouldn't that make more sense? Wouldn't that fill a desperate need? Sure, some people would get mad that they don't actually deserve that brand new truck in the driveway, but wouldn't they like to have the opportunity to know they've been duped?
Alright, I'm all done now.
NOTES: This post inspired by FOUR consecutive commercials on the radio, with outrageous claims about who "deserves" what, and why $300 per month is affordable to someone who takes home $1000.
I figured that with the word "failure" in the sub forum title, this just about fits perfectly here.
