I used to waste a lot of time online. My primary time sink was reddit - scrolling through low-value rage content just to pass the time.
Obviously I've known this to be bad for a while and tried a few strategies to stop but none of them ever worked long-term. I tried using blockers on my phone and pc browsers, custom android launchers designed to promote focus and mindfulness (I even paid for a few) but I'd always end up reverting my setup after a few days and going back to the same old habits.
What finally ended up working for me was redirecting instead of blocking. My phone and pc setups are pretty much stock now except for the fact that whenever I try to go to reddit, I get instantly redirected to.. the fastlane forum gold/notable threads.
The first few days using this setup were bizarre. I was now suddenly being thrown onto the FLF at random points during the day and it always took me by surprise. I would then realize that I just tried to open some useless subreddit and did not even do it conciously - it had become a reflex. Over the course of a few weeks I fully substituted reddit with FLF and now here I am making my first post after lurking on and off for... almost 10 years.
When it comes to the technicalities, it was pretty simple for me because I only ever used the internet browser to access reddit on both my phone and pc. So I just installed the first browser extension I found and made sure it also worked in private mode.
I realize that most people do their doomscrolling inside phone apps, so if I were to do something similar for e.g. the reddit app, I'd try samsung's Modes and Routines. It lets you create a routine which runs when an app opens. You can then automatically close the app which you tried to open and open another app instead. I quickly tested this and it looks ok but again, I don't use this because I have no need. I also don't own any apple devices so not sure if this can be done on iOS.
So that's it, dead simple yet worked far better than any paid solutions I tried. I really hope someone else can benefit from this and put their time to better use.
