Does that mean that your hard-won illustration skills don't have to be part of your career going forward? You'd be willing to drop the airbrush and leave all that behind, if there was a better way to make money?
I'm only leaving behind a career path that I thought was really cool at the age of 15 and never really questioned it ever since. The skill set will carry on with me.

Read Scott Adams "How to Fail at Almost Everything..."

He is the creator of Dilbert, and talks about the idea of a Talent Stack. He was an okay drawer, decently funny, and knew what working in an office was like. He combined these talents to become a world famous cartoonist.

There is no way to make $200k/year drawing stuff. But your talent for drawing could be combined with some of your other skills to create that income.

I have an idea, but it is just a starting point.

It starts with this movie about the graffiti artist Baksy:
Exit Through The Gift Shop

I haven't seen this movie yet, and all I have is a vague memory from some review I read online many years ago. That reviewer watched the movie, got inspired by some marketing tactics mentioned in the movie and had some success with his own art. Once again I don't remember who this artist/reviewer was, just that he was reviewing this movie. At least I hope it was this movie.

Check it out. Watch it. If you get no ideas or inspiration, it will at least be an interesting two hours.

If you are interested in animation, there's a way that you can earn $200,000. There is a dude who earns that amount, or at east raises budgets around $200,000 (specifically he raised that amount on Kickstarter for two feature-length films). His name is Bill Plympton. He is the most successful independent animator and is the envy of many animation professionals.

He is also famous for turning down a $1 million deal with Disney.

He wrote a book about how to be a successful independent animator:
Make Toons That Sell Without Selling Out | Plymptoons Store

This one I DID read. It is a quality book, and if you have any talent, if your work has any appeal, then you too might just be a successful independent animator as well.

In case you're not familiar with his work, here's a couch gag that he did for The Simpsons, which doubles as a remake for one of his Oscar-nominated shorts:

If you want to learn more, do not hesitate to DM me.

Good Luck...

Drawing in my opinion can fill few of the most important Human needs.
The Need of a person to Feel 'Important' , 'Cared for', The need to feel 'Unique'.
Need 1: Feeling Important : Draw a painting of a person on a T Shirt and sell him that T shirt .I guarantee 7 out of 10 times that person will buy that T Shirt (or any other product, keep price reasonable though).
Need 2: Feeling cared for: Send a painting/Drawing to someone's parent on their wedding anniversary. Initially free of cost but afterwards charge very minimal fees. Surprise people on their birthday with your painting. Go to hospital draw something to help the patients in need.
Need 3: Unique : Use your drawing skill to Draw unique drawings for Car,Bikes something that make your customer feel unique .

Web designers are always looking to express a statement with a strong visual. Sites like ui8.net sell sets of illustrations for just $45.

If you have drawing talent, turn your drawings into illustration packs and distribute them across all stock sites that way you can build up many assets that sell 24/7.

I’m new to this but I think that qualifies as fast lane.

Good idea but I recon he could take it one step further and build his own website that exclusively sells his graphics. It would be easy enough to set up a monthly membership site and get people to subscribe. That way you have more control over your images and aren’t so reliant on other websites (who could close at any moment or increase their fees). If it gets popular enough you could then expand it and get other graphic designers to sell their designs on your website, for a small fee of course :)

If i had excellent drawing skills like OP, i'd certainly go for this route. It's fastlane and brings home money even if you're not around / working. IoT is constantly evolving and nice interfaces and graphics will always be of demand (imo).

Your efforts could also be heading towards the "Teespring-Crowds", with predesigned stuff that's easy to use for photoshop montages and cheap for them to buy, because they want to make profits after all. Give away some for free, charge small amounts of money for good ones.

After this system is up and running i'd redirect efforts towards things that are fun to you, even if they don't bring in much money.

Either I wasn't clear enough or you misread. I'm pretty much broke, but I freelance to make money at the moment. I don't make much, and I'm constantly grinding, hence why I'm here trying to split my time from my income.

I skimmed some of this thread, but based on what I saw, I think this is probably the crux of your problem - you don't believe your art skills are good enough to earn what you consider "big money".

You might start within the time-for-money constraint but going for bigger income opportunities - to break that belief and prove to yourself that your skills ARE worth big money.

For example, you could do high end charcoal or even colored pencil portraits. You don't have to be famous - a lot of artists I know sell by word of mouth, a few online sites, and occasional art shows/events.

On the commercial side - design corporate logos for mid to large companies. I'm talking about your own design firm or contracting with a design firm, and not selling logos on fiverr.

Then apply CENTS. Some ideas:
Create adult coloring books.
Create illustration books, everything from fashion to architecture to floral motifs, e.g., from a Google search:

Hey WTF,

I found something interesting--I was browsing through the Apple website, and on the page for the Apple Pencil, they featured an illustrator. Sarah Clifford makes illustrated notes for biology and medical students.

Notes Store

Here's a product for medical students:

Okay serious answer: i don’t think it’s gonna happen with a pen and paper

This is how you’re gonna make money:

Scrap the Pad and Pencil and pick up an iPad and Apple Pencil. What can you do? Make digital assets for Envato market. People need drawings for YouTube videos etc

I heard there’s some good articles on Shopify about monetizing your work

And dude your avatar made me laugh so F*cking hard... I think you’ll be fine. Google “how to monetize my drawing skills"

I've spent my entire life drawing, and I went to an unaccredited school for drawing for a good 4 years (I fortunately managed to leave with absolutely no debt).

Right now I'm pretty much broke. I have about $500 in my bank account and freelancing can only make so much...

What would you guys suggest I do with my drawing skills in order to make over $200k+ per year? I know I can draw really well (not trying to boast but I can). There's got to be a way I can monetize this -- a way to separate my time from my income. I currently have a few ideas in mind but nothing fantastic...

What would you guys advise me? Please also keep in mind that although I'm an artist, and I can draw well, and that I'd like to start a business, I'd also like to stay out of the public light/not generate any fame (so I can't be like an art instructor on YouTube or my own website or anything).

You guys got any ideas for me? I'm really looking to monetize this and not just put an entire lifetime's worth of skill to no use (or for you guys to just advise me to do something else). There's gotta be something the market always wants with this skill of mine...

Input? Advice? Business ideas? I'd really appreciate the help.

Cheers.
Web Designing is one of in-demand skills that requires art . Pornographic content has a huge demand of artists who can write and draw Erotic sexual games and animes online .Think SIM dating. You can make money through Patreon or use your own website If you are really good , you can make anywhere around 100k-250k a year. It follows all 5 CENTS commandment .Games like dreams of desire makes 100,000 a year .The err is you have to really good at what you are making and be consistent.

I think pretty much all the UNSCRIPTED aspects are applicable.

Most important: create a brand that is not tied directly to your personality and time.

The Oatmeal is a great example, but probably not if you copy the exact approach to content creation.
The magic is in the brand and the levers in the business model (Patreon income, Crowdfunding projects, digital products etc.)

Also, remember that you need to think about the value you create more than about the amount of money you want to make and the way you want to make money.

There is a proverb "practice makes a man perfect" you should do this regularly and increase your level of expertise. Besides you can take help from your older one. Who is an expert in this criteria. All the best!

You are chasing money... Not chasing value.

Your skills don't matter. The things you enjoy or are passionate don't matter. If you want to be "rich" as you put it, you must be part of a scalable venture.

You are essentially asking how you can trade your drawing skills for $200k per year. Which isn't rich by the way. That is a JOB.

Not to sound too bad,but I personally believe that if you want to make something out of your art skills,it should satisfy a need.I'm sort of an artist myself and I have made some really cool cash from drawing and painting for people, but I noticed that I wasn't really satisfying a need and that's where the problem was.If you find a marketplace or environment that really needs your services,go for it,if not focus on something else that really fills a need in order to fund whatever art projects, activities, businesses you want to enforce.Just a suggestion, think about it.
