homeadvisors / thumbtack
There are usually two complaints.
The first is that other people get to the leads faster than you do. So you end up paying for a lead, even though the person's already has three people coming out to quote them. Every industry is a little different, and every area is a little different.
This is part of why I prefer thumbtack to homeadviser, because with thumbtack if too long it's gone by, you don't have to respond. thumbtack you only pay when you respond, the other you pay when the lead is sent to you.
The other complaint is that the leads are too expensive. especially because you're automatically in a little bidding war with two or three other people. Pay close attention to your numbers.
I say find a way to maximize these opportunities. Like I was saying get reviews on Google. Give the people some door hangers or some business cards to give their friends after you've done such an amazing job. There's ways to make it work, even if the other people are right about their complaints.
