I'm in the situation in my business where I need to be a better boss in order to drive things on. What books do you guys recommend or have read that impacted your leadership ability positively?

Thank you in advance.

I’m sure @Kak would recommend a few as he’s big on leadership being one of the top skills entrepreneurs need. I suspect some of his recommendations would be autobiographies.

I haven’t read any books on leadership per-se.

My thoughts though:

“Tell people what needs done and why, and let them figure out how.” (Blaise Brosnan)

"Praise in public, criticise in private."

"Catch them when they’re good."

People have different goals, values, and personalities. Some want new projects all the time. Some want to do the same thing all the time. Both can be equally valuable in the right role. Don’t run your cart-horse on the racetrack and get your race horse pulling carts.

Figure out people’s goals and try to align them with the goals of the business. Create win-wins. This can be as simple as acknowledging they want to get better at XYZ as it will make them more employable, and giving them experience implementing XYZ.

A manager is not a leader. Figure out what the difference is.

A leader’s job is to ask better questions, and then get them answered.

A leader’s job is to figure out what needs done (and why), and then arrange for it to be done.

You may want to get a project manager.

“People listen to experts, they follow leaders.” (Dan Gallappo)

Leaders Eat Last is a great read. It digs into the chemistry behind teamwork and environments. I know Sinek gets a bad rep sometimes but this one approached leadership with something new.

Other impactful books for me:

- The Ideal Team Player (Patrick Lencioni)
- Dare to Lead (Brene Brown)
- Culture Code (Dan Coyle)
- 21 Laws of Leadership (John Maxwell)
- Principles (Ray Dalio)

We’ve had a similar thread before which you may want to check out:

I’ve greatly enjoyed the recommendations there from @Kak (though judging by his reply here it seems that his own preferences may have shifted), @GPM and @socaldude - all of them amazing!
