Hi Fastlaners,

In my introduction thread, MJ went directly to the question that matters:

Is GoOverlay something streamers will pay for?
The honest answer today is: I don’t know yet.

The product works, but I don’t yet have recurring active users or real paying customers. I’m starting this progress thread to document what happens as I focus on validating it properly.

What is GoOverlay?

GoOverlay is a web-based real-time control layer for collaborative streaming.

A streamer connects it to OBS—or another application supporting browser sources—and prepares the overlays that can appear on screen. A trusted moderator, producer, or collaborator can then trigger and manage those overlays remotely while the streamer remains focused on the content and audience.

The collaborator does not need access to the streamer’s computer, OBS installation, or entire workspace. Permissions determine what each person can see and operate.

Large tournaments and professional productions can bring presenters and production teams into the same location, but that setup is difficult to justify for smaller tournaments and recurring streams.

I have worked on large global software projects and have seen the advantages of distributed teams. The right collaborator does not have to live in the same city or country, and remote collaboration can make production support more accessible across different regions and cost structures.

GoOverlay attempts to bring a lightweight version of that remote production workflow to streamers without requiring a full control room.
Although streamers are my initial validation target, the underlying workflow is not limited to them. It can also support corporate livestreams, internal broadcasts, webinars, podcasts, and product launches—any situation where one person presents while another manages what appears on screen.

I created this short specifically for this thread using GoOverlay’s Creator Mode. Both overlays can also be triggered live by a remote collaborator.

Current state

GoOverlay is already a stable and functional MVP—not just a mock-up or an attractive presentation.

AI significantly accelerated the implementation, but it was combined with around 12 years of professional experience in full-stack development, software architecture, testing, security, and scalable systems. That experience was important for reviewing decisions, structuring the platform, and distinguishing generated output from something I would actually trust in production.

The application currently includes:
  • User, workspace, scene, and collaborator management
  • Permissions and different collaborator access levels
  • Real-time overlay control and workspace chat
  • OBS-compatible browser-source output
  • Basic plug-and-play operation plus advanced customization and hotkeys
  • Automated Free and Premium subscriptions, billing, and a 14-day Premium trial
  • Multiple templates, anonymized usage statistics, testing, and security foundations
There are currently six content widgets: Countdown, Timer, Scoreboard, Text Ticker, Fun Fact, and Generic Text.

A seventh diagnostic widget, Testing Dot, helps users verify that the browser-source connection is working correctly.

Current business model

  • Free: Basic usage with a GoOverlay watermark. Recurring Free users would still validate the underlying need, while the watermark could help with organic discovery.
  • Premium: €3.99 per month for the first 100 paying users, with that founder price retained while the subscription remains active. It removes the watermark and includes more templates, customization, workspaces, scenes, and collaborator capacity.
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing for established streamers, studios, or agencies requiring higher limits and a dedicated design across all widgets. The initial design work would be priced separately, followed by a recurring subscription.
The provisional later Premium price is €12.99 per month as the product and widget library expand, but that price is still an assumption that must be validated.

Current traction and marketing

Some users have registered and tested the application, and I can see anonymized usage activity. However, I don’t yet have evidence of anyone using it consistently during real streams.

There are two paid test subscriptions—my own and one belonging to a family member—but neither represents a real customer. I therefore count the number of validated paying customers as zero.

My initial outreach focused mainly on small streamers. Some said they wanted to try GoOverlay but never followed through. A recurring reaction was that they considered themselves “too small” for this type of tool.

That suggests I initially targeted the wrong segment. My next outreach will focus on medium-sized streamers who already work with moderators or collaborators and are more likely to experience the problem GoOverlay is designed to solve.

Marketing attempted so far includes:
  • Direct outreach to streamers
  • Short widget demonstrations on Instagram and TikTok
  • Friends and personal contacts
  • A submission to the OBS forum that has not yet been published or accepted
Producing the short demonstration videos manually was taking me too long, so I built an internal function that generates ready-to-publish vertical videos from predefined settings. For now, I’m treating it strictly as a GoOverlay marketing tool.

The next 90 days

My validation plan is intentionally simple:
  • Get three, and then five, medium-sized streamers to use GoOverlay during real streams
  • See whether some of them continue using it for at least 30 days
  • Verify that moderators actually use the collaborative controls
  • Get real users to test the 14-day Premium trial
  • Acquire the first genuine paying customer
  • Avoid building more widgets unless real users reveal a specific blocker
A registration, a quick test, or someone saying “this looks interesting” will not count as validation.

I will update this thread as I reach these milestones—or discover that my assumptions are wrong.

Where I need feedback

This is the part where my technical experience helps less than my marketing and validation skills.

I have started reading Robert Cialdini’s Influence because marketing is an area I want to improve. However, I also don’t want to make the classic mistake of labelling a lack of demand as merely a marketing problem.

So I would especially appreciate your thoughts on these questions:

  • Does focusing on medium-sized streamers with active moderators sound like the right initial segment?
  • How would you reach these streamers and their moderation teams?
  • Does the current problem sound valuable enough, or am I trying to market a need that is not strong enough?
  • What would you test before investing in any additional product development?
The product exists.

Now the market gets to vote.
