UBI lite is coming in a bank near you.....

Notice it is off Trump's suggestion, so let's not start the whole it's all Democrat's fault thing here now. Getting paid doing nothing until economy "recovers"...hmm I wonder who defines as "recovered", I bet it is not the individuals do.

And Trump just said we might make this longer...

I completely agree with Trump's federal guidelines. His team took a medically sound approach, not rushed. It might take a bit longer but he's doing it the right way imo.

No doubt, wasn't commenting on that, a slow and gradual opening of the economy is needed. He also hinted second round of cash payments, will probably not be as good as what the Dems asked for, but it will be some. He can't possibly want to piss off too many voters since Nov. is coming, just not wise to have a bunch of angry poor people on the streets without work, in an election year, his hands is forced.

Wow, just wow. I'm going to say this as nicely as I can being someone that has gained a lot of value from this forum over the last few years. I can see that people with TDS are not the only ones starting to suffer from a bit of political derangement over this crisis. I'm starting to see views like this expressed from both sides where people are starting to view this virus as a political weapon that has been sent to attack "their side". I know we are in an election year, but this is not a red vs blue issue imo. I hope people can focus on encouraging their leaders to remain united and do what is right for the health and economic wellbeing of the public and we can get this under control. After that happens would be the best time to go back to worrying about the election imo. I don't think whoever released this virus in China (accidentally or otherwise) cared much whether a D or R wins the next election in the USA.

I consider myself a pretty informed person that can see both sides of arguments, read and interpret data, come to logical conclusions and have empathy towards all. But I just want to say that I have no F*cking clue what you guys are arguing about in this thread anymore. Seriously many of these posts make no sense to me at all. There’s no knowledge being exchanged and this is just a shit show.

For a little humor, I wanted to leave this here. I thought it was funny enough to share with you. Sorry if it has been posted before:

Here are the official Coronavirus guidelines:
1. Basically, you can't leave the house for any reason, but if you have to, then you can.
2. Masks are useless, but maybe you have to wear one, it can save you, it is useless, but maybe it is mandatory as well.
3. Stores are closed, except those that are open.
4. You should not go to hospitals unless you have to go there. Same applies to doctors, you should only go there in case of emergency, provided you are not too sick.
5. This virus is deadly but still not too scary, except that sometimes it actually leads to a global disaster.
6. Gloves won't help, but they can still help.
7. Everyone needs to stay HOME, but it's important to GO OUT.
8. There is no shortage of groceries in the supermarket, but there are many things missing when you go there in the evening, but not in the morning. Sometimes.
9. The virus has no effect on children except those it affects.
10. Animals are not affected, but there is still a cat that tested positive in Belgium in February when no one had been tested, plus a few tigers here and there…
11. You will have many symptoms when you are sick, but you can also get sick without symptoms, have symptoms without being sick, or be contagious without having symptoms. Oh, my..
12. In order not to get sick, you have to eat well and exercise, but eat whatever you have on hand and it's better not to go out, well, but no…
13. It's better to get some fresh air, but you get looked at very wrong when you get some fresh air, and most importantly, you don't go to parks or walk. But don’t sit down, except that you can do that now if you are old, but not for too long or if you are pregnant (but not too old).
14. You can't go to retirement homes, but you have to take care of the elderly and bring food and medication.
15. If you are sick, you can't go out, but you can go to the pharmacy.
16. You can get restaurant food delivered to the house, which may have been prepared by people who didn't wear masks or gloves. But you have to have your groceries decontaminated outside for 3 hours. Pizza too?
17. Every disturbing article or disturbing interview starts with "I don't want to trigger panic, but…"
18. You can't see your older mother or grandmother, but you can take a taxi and meet an older taxi driver.
19. You can walk around with a friend but not with your family if they don't live under the same roof.
20. You are safe if you maintain the appropriate social distance, but you can’t go out with friends or strangers at the safe social distance.
21. The virus remains active on different surfaces for two hours, no, four, no, six, no, we didn't say hours, maybe days? But it takes a damp environment. Oh no, not necessarily.
22. The virus stays in the air - well no, or yes, maybe, especially in a closed room, in one hour a sick person can infect ten, so if it falls, all our children were already infected at school before it was closed. But remember, if you stay at the recommended social distance, however in certain circumstances you should maintain a greater distance, which, studies show, the virus can travel further, maybe.
23. We count the number of deaths but we don't know how many people are infected as we have only tested so far those who were "almost dead" to find out if that's what they will die of…
24. We have no treatment, except that there may be one that apparently is not dangerous unless you take too much (which is the case with all medications).
25. We should stay locked up until the virus disappears, but it will only disappear if we achieve collective immunity, so when it circulates… but we must no longer be locked up for that?

I used to think this thread was the best place to go for info on the virus. Everybody posting different viewpoints, articles, and all around having a decent discussion. I'm not sure what it's turned into now. Seems like a big circle jerk of "government and media suck".

Why isn't anybody talking about how we open back up? There are a lot of unknowns to this virus. It seems like it sucks to get and it attacks other organs. I know I don't want to get it and I'm young and healthy. I don't want to go to the hospital. Overrun or not. Honestly it's disappointing what this thread has come to. Does wearing masks become the new norm? What did South Korea do to stop the spread of this? Taiwan? Aren't entrepreneurs supposed to be problem solvers?

Why isn't anybody talking about how we open back up?

Here are some examples from Europe:

Switzerland's schedule:

First phase commencing 27 April
In an initial phase commencing on 27 April, the Federal Council intends to ease measures on businesses where there is only a low level of direct contact, where precautionary measures can easily be put in place, and where there will be no significant movements of people. Measures regarding the inpatient medical sector will be eased, meaning that hospitals will again be free to carry out all types of procedure. Outpatient medical practices will also be allowed to resume normal operation and carry out all medical procedures, including non-urgent procedures. This covers dental, physiotherapy and medical massage practices, and should prevent the negative consequences that could arise as a result of people foregoing treatments and examinations.

Businesses offering personal services involving physical contact may also reopen, for example hairdressing salons, massage practices, tattoo and cosmetic studios. Florists, DIY stores and garden centres may also open again, as can unstaffed public facilities such as car washes. Lastly, the restriction whereby funerals may only be attended by close family will also be lifted.

From 27 April, restrictions on the range of products that can be sold at grocery stores will be lifted. Shops stocking goods other than essential everyday items in their stores may then resume selling these too.

Second and third phase: 11 May and 8 June
In phase two, which is set to commence on 11 May, it is planned that schools for children of compulsory-school age, shops and markets will reopen. The Federal Council will decide on whether to proceed with phase two on 29 April. In phase three, set to commence on 8 June, upper secondary schools, vocational schools and higher education institutions will be allowed to resume face-to-face teaching. At the same time, entertainment and leisure establishments such as museums, libraries, botanical gardens and zoos may reopen, and restrictions on gatherings could be relaxed. The Federal Council will take a decision regarding the details of this phase on 27 May. The Federal Council has not yet determined further phases. A decision as to when large-scale events will again be allowed to go ahead will be taken at one of its next meetings.

Germany's schedule:

Europe’s biggest economy plans to allow smaller stores to reopen next week after a weeks-long shutdown and to begin reopening schools in early May, but the country is keeping strict social-distancing rules in place for now.

Merkel said a ban on gatherings of more than two people in public and an obligation to keep at a five-foot distance from others will remain in effect after Sunday, when it was previously set to expire.

Major gatherings won’t be permitted through Aug. 31.

Non-essential stores will be allowed to start reopening, with hygiene precautions, if they are up to 8,600 square feet in area — as will auto showrooms, bike shops and bookshops, regardless of their size.

The measures apply to the period from Monday through May 3, Merkel said, and officials will review the situation again on April 30.

Does wearing masks become the new norm?

Depends on the country. In Europe, mandatory at all times outdoors in Austria, Czechia, Slovakia and Poland (just a few examples I found, not sure about other countries). Recommended but not mandatory in Germany and Switzerland.

I like Switzerland's Federal Office of Public Health stance and hope they'll stick to their guns:

“It hasn’t been proven that distributing masks to the public protects people,” said Daniel Koch, head of communicable diseases at the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), at a press conference on March 17.

Koch has repeatedly expressed his opposition to the widespread wearing of protective masks in the population. In an interview with Swiss public television, SRF, on March 27 he said that wearing a mask could even give people a false sense of security.

“It’s clear that, wearing a mask, you feel you are better protected. And that probably results in some people paying less attention to other precautionary measures – they wash their hands less, touch their mask and face more, don’t keep their distance,” he said.

source: Should all Swiss be wearing face masks?

What did South Korea do to stop the spread of this? Taiwan?

React early, something that nearly every single country in the world failed to do. Then test aggressively and actually be proactive in reducing cases to a manageable level so that every case can be traced and every possible infected person identified over waiting for a mythical "peak" while doing nothing to actually slow down the spread.

Aren't entrepreneurs supposed to be problem solvers?

Good luck solving a giant problem created by the government. And just to be clear, I'm not referring to the virus but the utter destruction of the economy and millions of people's lives.

Online videos going from 11% to 51% across generations is pretty amazing (and I'm sure would be less than 11% in older than boomers).

It's honestly sad that books never rose much above 20% in any generation though.

More dismissal of people you don't agree as some self appointed noble authority. I think your posts are a circle jerk of boot licking and media loving.

Just because you call us all crazy doesn't make your position correct.

Well that’s likely due to the difficulty of getting books.

They should have added ebooks and audiobooks as well, which I’m sure went up.

Who said I disagree? The last thirty pages of this thread have been nearly worthless.
I'm curious. What's your solution? If you're in charge how do you handle this situation?
Are you going to overthrow the government? Start a news company that isn't biased?

Because the government sucks so bad how are you taking control of your situation? Packing plants are closing and dairy farmers are dumping milk. What happens when the country of cheap, plentiful food isn't so much anymore?

This thread has gotten off-topic multiple times, but generally, cooler heads have prevailed. There was my own pointless spat with Kak, Rivoli's stupid dick-measuring contest, and then the political clusterfuck on Wednesday. Nevertheless, the thread has come back to its original purpose each time and still has plenty of value.

Regardless of anyone's opinions, reality is what it is. No individual is going to change their current circumstances. As the maxim goes, "Focus on what you can control and not on what you cannot control." No one can control the governors and no one can control the virus. Entrepreneurs are renowned for finding opportunities in any situation and there are many opportunities in this situation also.

@YoungPadawan just yesterday posted about a huge opportunity that would likely benefit anyone in ecommerce.

Then there was the thread about selling freezers. MJ locked that thread, but even if questionable, the example is still valuable.

I was also talking with another Fastlaner yesterday and he was telling me about how "zoom lighting" is now a thing and how a random lighting company was able to pivot, target that keyword, repurpose their products and marketing for people looking for "zoom lighting" and really tap this brand new market that did not exist at all two months ago. How many other opportunities are currently available? Probably hundreds.

If you in non-FBA ecommerce in any form, now is your time to steal market share from Amazon and from your competitors.

If you are fulfilling FBM, now is your time to figure out how you can connect with your FBM customers as much as possible. Since sellers get zero customer data from FBA orders, you can utilize flyers, codes, etc to try to capture FBM customer email addresses.

If you are launching a new product, now is your time to do free giveaways and market to people when ads are cheap and when Google Adwords is giving away free credit. People are stuck at home, sitting on their phones, how do you connect with them?

If you are knowledgeable about building websites, now is when you should be reaching out to B&M places in your area to help them sell their products online.

If you really don't know what to do and you think the virus is no big deal, you could probably make decent money doing deliveries.

But one thing is certain, if all you do is read/watch the news and fixate on how shitty the current situation is, you are going to miss the opportunities you might have.

To be fair, Asian countries suffered a lot more from SARS. Wearing a mask in many Asian countries was pretty much second nature before. It wasn't hard for them to hear about the virus and think "Here we go again, at least we caught wind of it early".

Sadly, most other countries let the virus walk into their airports with the mindset that it only happens to others.
Many of us, early on in this very thread, called for closing of airports and 14 day quarantines for anyone trying to get into the country. Yes, that would have hurt tourism... But look at where we are now. EVERYTHING is hurt, and not just tourism (Except online entertainment).

Ultimately, this is all in the past now and hindsight is 20/20. It could have turned out worse, or better, if this or that was done. There are lots of lessons to be learned but, like many others said, this crisis stopped being about the virus 3 weeks ago.
This is now the trigger for a recession everyone was waiting for. Some got in early, prepped their food and shorted their stocks. For those who didn't? This is now a recession and we must treat it as one. Lots of businesses will go belly up, and that's a lot of new opportunities to expand if you have the eye for them.

Unemployed people are bored people, they will want entertainment and escapism. Some of them will want to learn new skills. Some will look at this as a chance and become entrepreneurs themselves. My friends have been worried about the coming hard times, but I am honestly excited.
With cheap loans and a lot of valuable skilled workers out of jobs, there is a lot of new businesses to start too.

This is our time to shine.

My answer is the same it has always been. Let capitalism and profit motives work through the problem.

What does that mean? People go back to work carefully, by choice. High risk individuals can take greater precautions, by choice. We live with our decisions. Nothing by force.

Right now the dole from the government is coming in like flash floods, the company I work for is hiring like bunkers right now, due to having the big brother as a customer. I think things will be this way for at least the next year, giving there is an election coming in Nov. Not so smart to piss off all the 20% unemployed people right now. I am thinking some kind of service/website to help those 20% manage their soon to be passed out monthly government free checks, that's a lot money printed to be passed out folks. While I am not having enough access to bid on all those government contracts that are being put on the market right now, sure there is someway we can sell products/services to the mass unemployed, being that I can still see I will have a well paying job and demand for the foreseeable future.

I feel that I am in a lucky and unique position right now that I should be doing something special about it.

I'm interested to see how everything plays out in Sweden. Seems to be similar to what you're thinking.

Being the captain of my high school debating team I have always enjoyed a good debate, but when much of this thread was filling up with exchanges of the kind that I would never have allowed from my team, I stopped reading.

Now, with the announcement by POTUS that indicates a return to business is on the not too distant horizon, or to put it another way, there is light at the end of the tunnel, I came back to see the response.

The best I found was by @Trevor Kuntz here:

I was also talking with another Fastlaner yesterday and he was telling me about how "zoom lighting" is now a thing and how a random lighting company was able to pivot, target that keyword, repurpose their products and marketing for people looking for "zoom lighting" and really tap this brand new market that did not exist at all two months ago. How many other opportunities are currently available? Probably hundreds..........
But one thing is certain, if all you do is read/watch the news and fixate on how shitty the current situation is, you are going to miss the opportunities you might have.

Since I departed this thread I have in my thread: IS COVID 19 THE TIME TO FORGE AHEAD? been encouraging members to plan and be prepared for the GRAND RE-OPENING. Drum Roll !

I would love to see constructive input here in this thread about how to capitalize on the vast opportunities that are looming on the horizon.

Walter
