The point I would like to raise from that is, if your health care is able to handle the load (preferably the cases unfold over time versus at the same time) the mortality rate might be something like 1%. If not, the mortality rate could be 3-5x that.

Plus... if you have several countries going into a really bad situation at the same time the international resources get spread out much more thinly, compounding the problem.

This is why aggressive containment seems like the only right play now.

I think a business which delivers groceries or other essential items to the elderly or sick would do really well right now.

I was thinking that earlier, but not just for the elderly.

Also at-home live stream body-weight and other exercises. Let people pay to join a private online local community or something lead by you while you watch P90X on your television (or whatever program you prefer to get your sweat on).

Not going to happen.

This isn’t Ebola. You don’t tank the entire economy for a virus that has a 1% death rate. People would literally starve to death if interstate commerce was freezed.

If this was done from the very beginning. Borders closed, mandatory quarantine for ANYONE coming from China or other affected countries. We would have 0 cases in our countries.

Simply put, the important decision was how to stop infected people from crossing your border, while impacting your economy as little as possible.

Obviously, hindsight is 20/20, and we now know how important screening and closing down airports was. But right now we have failed at the borders level and we have moved the goal post from closing down airports to locking down cities. The earlier these critical sacrifices are made, the better the result.

TRAVEL FROM EUROPE TO US WILL BE SUSPENDED FOR 30 DAYS STARTING FRIDAY AT MIDNIGHT

UK Exempt, overseas Americans exempt once they pass inspection.

Also includes flow of goods (trade), but I think he mentioned that was more on a case by case basis.

Lots of financial stuff, stimulus/aid packages for people and businesses affected, insurance companies won't be charging extra for virus treatments (can't remember exact phrasing here, something about insurance companies easing up on people who have to deal with the virus).

And then the usual rah rah we are America we will emerge strong.

Hoo boy let's see what this does to the markets. Buckle up!

Economic aid "for those impacted by the coronavirus". Quite convenient a stipulation when you're not testing people for the virus unless they've been abroad.

I get that Trump is in a difficult position. Realistically there's nothing he can do to please everybody. But this was just about the most tepid plan of action I could imagine. It's a day late and a dollar short.

Not to mention all the platitudes about "greatest economy in the world" or "best prepared to deal with the virus". The American people need candor, honesty and bold leadership, not vacuous platitudes and half measures that would have been effective 3 weeks ago.

He is the president though. There are some very extreme measures they could take to save his life that would normally not be used.

ECMO is basically a lung bypass machine if your lungs fail, they usually use this with premie newborns, but they do have adult size machines. I’m sure the most extreme measures would be used on him.

ARGH..the appointment didn't go well. I'm seeing all of the practice's doctors at least once to get familiar with them, in case my baby decides to come earlier than my scheduled date and the on-call doctor has to deliver him.

I'd never seen this OB before, and she completely brushed off my coronavirus concerns. She told me to worry more about the flu, and that if we were to get it, it would be mild and we would't even know it was anything other than a typical cold. Then she said the news is just sensationalizing the virus for website hits.

Few around here are taking this seriously at all.

One way or another there will be consensus that forms over time. It is good for there to be some difference of opinion. It keeps the debate open, and in all honesty there is a whole lot unknown at this time. I have one viewpoint, I still like to have discussions with people that see this another way, because it’s good for all ideas to be challenged. I don’t fault your OB for having that perspective, there is probably some truth to it.

Nobody anywhere in the world is under quarantine with their government restricting their movement.

There haven't been any panic runs on useless paper products. Nobody would ever think to get food next.

People would never resort to violence over scraps when they realize they're behind the curve.

There are no supply chain disruptions that will limit peoples' access to goods in the future.

The truckers will always ship food to the stores, no matter how many of them or their families get sick.

The utility workers will never get sick and stop coming to work to maintain critical infrastructure.

The hospitals have infinite resources, so no matter how many sick people show up at once, they will all get personalized attention just like those on the Diamond Princess.
