Copywriting/Freelancing to get going

Hi,

I have been on the forum for a couple of months now and tried to take action, but I am sort of paralysed, because I don`t really know, what to do, and I am afraid to lose money.

So right now I am thinking of starting in the freelance world as a copywriter. That would have three benefits:
1. I would stop action faking and instead would take some real action.
2. I would learn a new skill.
3. I would earn some money to fuel my other entrepreneurial endeavors. (Right now I am thinking of ecommerce, but who knows.)

I was thinking of using the money I make as a freelancer only for business endeavors. That way, I could circumvent the fear of losing money, because if I dedicate the money I earn for my business, it changes the way I see the money, from money I have to money I am going to invest. That would make it a lot easier for me to invest the money.

Now I got some questions:
1. Do you think, that this is a good plan to get things going or do you think that it would be better to invest the time in a business in the first place?
2. Just out of curiosity: How long would it take, until you can earn a living as a freelance copywriter if you don`t have any experience?
3. I need around 10k to get things going. How long would it take, until one can make that sum with freelancing / copywriting?

1. Copywriting is a business. It's also a skill, an art, and a science. So keep that in mind. You will be investing your time in a business if you become a freelance copywriter. If you don't treat it like a business but a hobby then it won't treat you like a business owner and you will end up with hobbiest pay.

2. I earned enough for a living my first month on Upwork both times. That didn't include clients outside of Upwork. I didn't have any copywriting experience my first time around, but I did have a couple years publishing ebooks, training in psychology, and a background in collections that helped me with sales. Plus I was willing to take huge risks and took ongoing training in other areas.

To be honest, I don't think I've met a single person who asked this question who ever earned a living with copywriting. If you were serious about the craft, the business, and growing it into something real from scratch (with none of the skills listed above) then you will likely need at least one year to get good enough, experienced enough, and confident enough to earn a living on-demand.

You can make money fast with freelance copywriting. But to earn a living you have to think different, be better, and take risks that other people won't.

3. I made that amount of money almost from a single gig. Let's not beat around the bush. You're asking how long it will take you to make that amount of money. None of us can answer that for you. You need to earn $834 per month to hit $10k in a year. If you're good at selling yourself on live phone calls, then you'll hit that in no time if you really want it. If you have no idea what you're doing, and you don't train yourself to sell or won't get on phone calls then you can expect to earn that amount in 2-5 years.

But if we're just going with the undefined "one" well, it can be done in a month.

Do you have any writing experience at all? Have you read any books on the subject? What is your work experience? Did you enjoy your English classes in school?

You are absolutely right. I have not considered it that way yet, because I only carry the idea around with me for a few days, but it makes complete sense.

That sounds like mindset is the most important thing to make it as a freelance copywriter. Now the question is, what is the right mindest? I already read something about mindset in your 15 days to freedom thread, but I haven´t finished it yet. Do you have some further tips (I am at Day 7 at the moment)?

I enjoyed the english classes in school, but I thought of starting out in my mother tongue as a copywriter.
I have writing experience, actually I am writing blog posts for a couple of different online shop blogs that the company I am working at is running and I am also doing most of the writing related to public relations (like press releases and so on). What I haven´t done yet, is writing sales letters, maybe some headlines here and there, but that´s about it. To get better, I am working through the 15 days to freedom thread from @Lex DeVille.
