Has anyone ever used Good Adwords or Yahoo Overture to promote a website? I have a friend who has started up a business but has limited knowledge like myself of the topic. He has explored using both some with only small success. Is there anyone here that would be willing to point to a website that provides tips/information or someone that I could talk to on the topic? I want to learn as much as possible, as quick as possible :)

Thanks guys!

Luke

Cumulatively, I spend around $40K/mo for both. Newbies have to be careful as you can piss through $500 in 20 minutes if you're not careful.

Tips can be found at WebmasterWorld.com.

If you continue to do this I assume it's worth it?

Thanks for the advice guy. I reach John Symon's via e-mail. He responded back very quickly. He referred me to a site similar to Perry Marshall's . I am sure everyone has heard of his site. Right now, I am just going through google's learning center and getting the basics down. Later on I may decide to take a advance course on adwords to futher my knowledge on the subject.

Yea, but the ROI has continuously declined over the years as its more competitive for bids and requires more intense management/attention to keep ROI's steady, if not increasing. You can spend 40 hrs week doing conversion testing alone.

It is becoming harder and harder to profit from PPC advertising. Thousands of people are bidding on the same key words as you. A lot of them have no experience, and they are driving up the prices. It's going to get even worse in the future.

I saw the same thing happen in the infomercial industry, where prices became so high, that it was very, very hard to make money. As an example, I paid over $40,000 for a 3am spot on the Discovery channel, and $18,000 for a 4pm spot on the Golf channel. You have to sell a lot of products to make any money, and I see PPC advertising going the same way, because there is always someone willing to pay huge prices.

:iamwithstupid: Yup, its usually the newbies that inflate prices. They have no clue what they're doing and they artificially inflate prices. When they go bankrupt in their PPC forays, 2 more pop up to replace them.

There is plenty of money being spent on PPC advertising, and more money is on its way. Additionally, Google has made requirements vague and confusing recently. By itself, it can be pretty much a full time job. If you aren't tracking & measuring everything it can appear to be impossible to run a positive ROI campaign.

For beginners, check out the book "Winning Results with Google Adwords" by Andrew Goodman. Some stuff is out of date, and some stuff is just wrong, but its a good starting point.

Finally, do track everything. Just tossing out a few keywords and ads is not going to cut it. The difference between losing $500 a day and making $1000 can be pretty minor, silly things. You need to track landing pages, keywords, ad copy, and conversions. I think you can do a pretty good job with Google Analytics and Google Website Optimizer for free (I use custom & proprietary software.)

If you want to really get good at this, its probably a solid 500+ hours of work.

Thanks for the advice guys. Any websites/books that you would suggest for learning purposes? I am working my way through the google's learning center on adwords right now.

That's it...when people start online businesses they just want someone to visit and the prospect of buying a visitor at even a crazy price is just to hard to resist.

While you can make ROI on PPC advertising, don't forget that it's up to YOUR site and design once they get there. It better be good if you want them to hand over the $$$$
