Woodford is my go to for Old Fashioned's.

Woodford was my go to for Old Fashioned's but ever since I discovered Tom's Town Distillery in downtown Kansas City, I prefer their local creation the Pendergast Royal. Sorry for the poor quality of the image and bottle, but I am currently enjoying this as I wait out Irma.

Tom's Town |

I should also mention my collection has some very fine bottles and I have been quite surprised by the quality of what I get when I go to Japan. I was a purest for a long time, and even though I lived in Japan a while I believed no way they had good whiskey. Well Hibikki changed all that for me. Pick up any of their higher quality whiskeys. You won't be disappointed.

So yes, there is buried treasure in my family, and it's 6 bottles of 45-50 year-old, good-enough-to-give-as-a-Christmas-gift, Whiskey.

I've got bad news for ya. Whiskey doesn't age in glass. A bottle of 12-year singlemalt that got stashed away 50 years ago is still a bottle of 12-year whiskey. If you want a whiskey that's aged for 45 years, you've gotta leave it in the cask for that long.

For myself, I'm not that fond of the very peaty whiskeys, so this stuff is my go-to treat. Tyrconnell.jpg

Yeah, I know that now.

Someone else in this thread already rained on my parade.

Recently had Tullamore D.E.W for the first time, and for a cheap Irish it was pretty damn tasty. Highly recommended. Goes well with a Diamond Crown Julius Caesar Robusto.

Fun Fact of the Day: A shot is called that because back in the old west days an ounce pour of whiskey had about the same price as a .45cal shot so many times people would trade a shot for a drink instead of paying money.

I've always wanted to be a scotch drinker, but never could develop the taste for it. I bought a bottle of 12 year old Glen Moray several years back but never could get the hang of it. I still have most of it left, since it seems almost sacrilegious to add coke to it.
It's a shame, since there are a few good places around town that have weekly scotch tastings. Maybe one day...

I never liked scotch until I learned how to drink it. I've said it once, I'll say it again, Scotch is like wine. You have to understand it to appreciate it.

Someone who never drinks wine and can tolerate a fruity white will hate the taste of a full bodied red. But if you teach them to dissect the flavors and smells, you can really appreciate it.

The same goes for Scotch. Go to thise tastings and after a couple, you'll get it. And you'll love Scotch. Scotch isn't a drink, it's an experience.

For what it's worth, I don't like wine either :playful:

There's a tasting coming up in a few weeks that I might try to attend. I have to admit it's quite intimidating for a scotch noob when the establishment has a scotch list 28 pages long.

Here is another whiskey that I had recently that was very smooth and enjoyable:
Monkey Shoulder Whisky

Monkey Shoulder. It was surprisingly easy to drink if you are new to Whiskey and unsure if you like it. I thought it was great neat and over ice. I haven't tried it in any mixers yet.

This is my poison, Woodford Reserve, the best thing close to heaven.

View attachment 16219

Went to the liquor store today.

Saw a wall of whiskeys.

My phone died while trying to open this thread, so I let intuition guide me based on my memory of what I read here.

The "woodford reserve" sounded like something someone said, so I bought it.

I will be drinking the bottle with companions this weekend and will report back.

Nope. Just had some Woodford Reserve on my flight from Orlando to San Francisco just now. First class all the way. It is definitely a good Go To whiskey.

The Woodford was well received.

The waves of flavor were awesome and not too intense. Those swigs were thoroughly enjoyable.

In July, I made my own whiskey cocktail. I aged some new make spirits with some bitters for 4 months. DBD75E11-EDAD-4737-A6C1-7F2353E547AA.jpeg

Then in November I added some pure maple syrup to it. Let it age a little longer.

CA7B48C1-8B55-44D5-9400-B1C223EA40BD.jpeg

The other night I poured some straight from the cask, added a little bit of water and an ice cube and enjoyed a local hand rolled cigar.

Nothing like enjoying the fruits of your labors!

Who else has their own aging barrel? What have you made with it?

Thanks for digging this up @Scot.

Damn y’all are fancy. I had no idea the world of whiskey was such. Cool read.

My whiskey experience is laughable - Beam, Canadian Mist and JD#7.

I did have a glass of scotch with my mentor this summer. I endured for gratitude’s sake, but ain’t gonna lie - I thought I killed my mouth.

The best - The guys at Four Roses brought a sample barrel to a golf tournament I sponsored. No name or info...but the best I ever had.

The most memorable - JW Dant. I heard my grandfather drank it in his day. I would have liked to have one with him. I stop by a local watering hole and have one for him every year or so.

The go to's:
Four Roses single barrel
Woodford Reserve
Basil Haydens

In my glass right now - Rock Hill Farms, Single barrel

To be honest, before I went to Scotland and actually was taught how to taste and enjoy Scotch, I hated the stuff.

I compare Scotch to a really full bodied red wine. If you don’t really know what you’re looking for, it just tastes bad.

Woodford Reserve

Woodford is my go to for Old Fashioned’s.

I'm a fan of heavily peated scotch. I also love Aberfeldy... the first time I tasted it, I was like the people in the old peppermint patty commercials, transported to another place. Except it wasn't the Alps, it was a sunny meadow strewn with heather.

@Scot I haven't started distilling or barrel-aging at the house, but I've done some fun experiments. I've had very good success making mead in mason jars. Delightful stuff. I like to make a fizzy mead that's not to sweet but not absolutely dry. I've also made passable wine from starfruit and local wild yeast.

Another good thing is making your own bitters. Just take a high-proof rum or other drinkable alcohol (works with wines too), and stuff it full of herbs for a few months. My particular favorite is mugwort, which I used to grow in the yard. A friend was house-sitting and got into the mugwart bitters... he claims to this day it enabled him to walk on the ceiling :wideyed:

This is one this I still haven’t been able to enjoy yet. Peated Scotch’s just kill my mouth. Pallet just isn’t refined enough yet I guess haha

Admittedly, I saw possible opportunity when you guys said that whiskey doesn't age in a glass bottle, and saw the aging barrel that @Scot was using. ::Lightbulb:: Why not wooden whiskey bottles? A quick search revealed a few - very expensive, $50USD/bottle. I also saw people inserting charred sticks in their glass bottles, but the reviews claimed they didn't work. Perhaps some proportion dynamics at play, the amount of whiskey in a barrel vs. the interior surface area of the barrel itself.

Interesting -

Any of the Islay malts would suit you then. Bowmore seems very smoky/peaty to me.

Back in July I spent several hours enjoying a tour of the Penderyn Welsh distillery (and yet another tasting session afterwards).

Good malt can get to become an expensive hobby
