I found a good quote from john paul the shampoo billionaire. On my phone as my computer smashed so can't exact quote it but went something like "your never selling your product, it should be so good it sells itself" which I'd say is something I lack.

What type of business do you see yourself in?

If it's selling "something " online, can you think a bit about what value you can bring to a customer?

If you had a bit more money - say a steady $60k per year, what would YOU buy aside from basic living expenses?

I like the pet industry as it is an extremely large market although it's hard to see big value I can deliver to people.
As for what I would buy, since my laptop just broke I'd get a new one, snowboard and car! $60k would be a lot to me, I look at it as 4 or 5 years living exp.

see some fun products on alibaba, a bit sketched out about buying stuff from china.. the idea of sending money online seems silly but ill figure it out

can buy a product for literally dimes and retail for around $5-$10, seems like a fair price.

still looking around but just wanted to share

Sales strategy is important factor
what i think if your beginner than sale the product at lowest price (Create Value for Customer) and build the trust of customers on your brand.
i know you initially face problem but day after tomorrow you become sunshine.
for business people one famous quote " Today is Bad tomorrow is worst but day after tomorrow you become shine" in MJ Philosophy you want to become action taker not action faker.

Thanks Bro

it's hard to see big value I can deliver to people.

Value is what people make of it. If you stick at something long enough, people recognize your brand. Then, the value they get is a sense of belonging.

You may have heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs? Maslow came up with a framework that says, more or less, that all value people get is in line with this scale, with the first needs, at the bottom, having to be met first:

maslow.png

So think about a product you know - say longboards. There are sure to be some high-end brands people buy to meed their "Esteem" need; then there are people who use them for competition, meeting their "Self-Actualization" needs.

Then there are some who can't ride, but buy a brand-name board to show off - that's the "Social" need.

Until a rider is confident, or possibly even afterward, they buy helmets, knee pads, etc - that's the "Security" need being provided with the value.

Finally, people who can't afford to eat probably don't buy boards - they are still in survival mode, working on their "Physiological" needs.

So the question is, what need can you meet when you sell something? If you're trying to be the cheapest, you're shooting for the bottom rung!

If you're piggybacking on Amazon's SEO, your value is convenience. That's pretty low on the chain, and the barrier to entry is very low too.

If you take the time to build recognition - even among a tiny group of people - your value is in meeting the "Social" need of a small group.

Think about it, and look at what value you might provide.

That's a good post thanks. I'm thinking a strategy for a pet brand would be as you said to go for a social "need" one brand that is a very interesting study is lulu lemon. Have went there myself to check out what they retail items for and it's beyond belief the insanity to purchase a shirt or pants for almost $200. But! I tried out one of they're free yoga events (first time ever) and seemed like a very cool experience. They've built a very successful company around having a cult like following of yoga hippie people that want to feel special. At the end they made they're soft pitch with hey come check our store! For a pet brand perhaps the best strategy would be to get involved with charities and animal hospitals. Where a % of proceeds goes to xxxx just an idea. I believe people could get behind something like that.

Now you're talking, how could you start being valuable in that way?

Value comes first, money later. It doesn't cost you to be valuable in that way.

Why not talk to 100 or 1000 dog owners or cat owners and see what their biggest frustrations are around pet ownership

I'm sure you can find some of them around

Yep, you could start on a community level. I would ask what you like to take part in personally and what you are very knowledgeable about.

Forget about money when you consider this. Don't worry about market size or anything either. Make a list of things you enjoy and are interested in and areas that you are knowledgeable.

This is a better place to start than the "market size" in my opinion.

Hey do you mind if I ask you a question? (Random street person) puzzled look... I'm doing a street survey and asking people what kind of problems they have with pet ownership?!!? Uhhh... Don't know haven't thought about it....... So that was my first one, going for a long walk tommorow so I'll post some more, saw a cat in a window and it had a limp so I knocked on the door and offered my bed for free. Hopefully it's sunny tm, today was one if the nicest days in a while.

Got feedback from a couple of people, one big problem they mentioned was a lack of garbage cans around the city to throw they're dogs crap in ( ew walking around holding dog crap ) my mind thought of creating some type of leash maybe you could attach a bag of crap to lol. Or perhaps some kind of scooper that could crush it to make it more compacted and seal proof it maybe , just random ideas. Also just gave away my bed to some person with a cat as @biophase said to just give it away

Ok so looked up amazon and saw someone already invented my "idea" almost 800 sales for a leash that has a little pouch dog crap holder. I believe the big thing here is simply getting a good product and just getting it out there... Easier said than done

Some more feedback was a lack of dog parks and the crappy weather lol, unrelated to thread just thought it was funny, yesterday we had elections in vancouver and a candidate running was preaching increasing taxes for the 1% and giving out free housing and free transit.

Asked one person and they said they have *no problems at all* what a wonderfull life that must be,.another..the amount of time they require to take care of they're pet. leads to dog sitting and walking etc which has been a profitable buisness I think for a few people in my area. Although I do not like the buisness model of babysitting a dog which could lead to potential legal nightmares etc. do like the concept of dog crap holders on a leash, already a proven seller on amazon and oddly enough it's still common to see people walking around holding a bag of crap.

Looking for jobs in AB, still in van for a few more weeks, thought of checking out instructing for snowboarding, and it's a 400 course lol! If I could get a job on a mountain again like last year would be ideal, otherwise thinking some customer service like Starbucks or somewhere I don't need to spend money on food. Been raining everyday here...super miserable, made me think of the story mj said in tmf sitting in the limo thinking is this what my life has become? Ha! Should be able to get a job easily I suppose, for now just saving up money at my current job ( construction on apartment ) my next paycheque will be oct 27th, thinking of taking my one way flight shortly after, 2 years ago I left my home ( on moms tits for 23 years ) and felt like a big loser, I arrived in vancouver from Toronto with $6k cash ready to start a chapter in my life, it was a very freeing moment having full control over my life. Fast forward a year (2016) I am a fully "scripted" member of the 99%. Paying rent for the first time in my life and having to feed myself whilst barely getting by slaving a fulltime job. Ofc around the end of the year 2016 I read tmf . Left on November 3rd which will be my 2 year of "independence" more like being a legal slave, had some fun in the process, although this has been a chapter of my life I wanted to share. Sad with my progress so far, I will get there though! Hope you enjoyed my diarrhea of a story

I saw a few posts ago you talking about dog bags.

We have a little container that holds bags for dog crap. It's shaped like a bone and has an opening so you can roll one off like a paper towel dispenser. The bags are scented so you can stick your hand in, wrap it back around your hand, pick it up, and then invert it without having that awful smell following you.

I think my wife bought it on Chewy, but a couple problems with it that you can research. It isn't constructed very well. The end popped off (which is how you would insert a new roll of bags) and now it's not really that snug. The roll doesn't stay on the prongs so it just sits in there. Also, the bags are cut like a square so when you want to tie the bag off, it's just not efficient, although it works.

Maybe that will give you some ideas to start.

The one we have has a hook on it that is part of the mold. It would be hooked into the loop of the leash so it doesn't slide down the leash.

ah, ive seen a leash on amazon that has an oversized pouch on top near middle. i believe it can be improved, and is an item that is capable of being sold by word of mouth. considering reinventing a product like that and getting production setup, have a bit of money saved up from work!
