I heard this in a podcast once and it has stuck with me.

If you live everyday to its fullest what would you really do? Drink all you want, do drugs, have sex with women, spend money like crazy? If you really did this would you feel good about yourself after you did this 10 days in a row? After 2 months of this when you look back at your life, are you happy with how you spend that time?

When you are training for a marathon daily, you aren't thinking, "wow this is the best day ever" 1 hour into your training run in the rain. In fact, you are miserable. But yet you do this 2 straight months to train. When you complete the marathon, when you look back at your life, are you happy with how you spend that time?

Think about the ball player who spends hours in the gym practicing. Is he living life to its fullest in the sense that most people think? Probably not, but I say that he is. He's practicing to become the best at his sport, that work he puts in with give him ultimate joy when he wins the championship or MVP next year.

Living life to its fullest doesn't mean that you just do what is fun at the moment. It's about doing things that make you feel fulfilled when you look backwards.

Just like in building a business, it's hard work and sometimes miserable, living day to day with some pain and suffering increases the happiness and joy at the end of the race.

@MJ DeMarco featured post?

I read and copy pasted this text several times already.

@Vigilante Sorry, brother.

Bad news never has good timing.

But it can be a good reminder to focus on what matters most, and let the trivial go.

I've lost several family members in the past year, and, while both were pretty shocking, it did bring together the family, as a whole. I have a particularly large family, and so there are many different ideals and opinions which has created tension among everyone over the past years.

Suddenly having a couple of those members pass makes you realize pretty quick what makes a difference, and what makes a void.

It sounds like your friend made quite the difference, and I hope he's honored and remembered for it.

"Work boots, one blue suit. Size too small don't wear it at all... unless somebody kicks, gets hitched. That's a bitch. Makes me itch." - Trace Adkins

I have to go buy a shirt and tie today. I gave all that shit away a few years ago.

When I went to my mentors funeral a few years back, I wore a shirt and tie. It was a final gesture of respect, as he was always overdressed for any occasion and always kicked my a$$ for underdressing every occasion.

I was searching online for some news about him, and came across a Facebook post that google had indexed from a church where he did the steel girders for. They posted a picture of the steel girders, and a memorial tribute. That building will outlast him by 150 years or more.

Work on EPIC STUFF. LEGACY STUFF. LEAVE FOOTPRINTS.

I think the idea of the quote is, if you're madly in love with becoming a great basketball player and you're working 90 hours a week as an investment banker, you aren't living your life like it's your last day.

But if I play basketball all day and never work, I'll never earn money.

Really sorry to hear that. Life is really strange, we do not choose to be born and we do not choose to leave this earth. What we DO choose, is to do whatever makes us happier, day by day. Hopefully when we get on the Fastlane we think of others and not only ourselves. My condolences.

Unless basketball is your work.

I mean that if you really live like if it is your last day on earth, you don't work, you don't eat healthy and don't do many other useful and necessary things. Why working if you're gonna die tomorrow?

Last Thursday, I did a speech in Toastmasters during a speech contest and I told the audience they will die one day and asked them to visualize their own funeral:

What will they say about you?
Will you have regrets about what you have (not) done in your life?
Did you realize it was gonna end so sudden?

It felt like the temperature in the room dropped with 10 degrees. I was surprised how little people actually realize this.

Oh, and I lost the contest. People don't want to hear their life will end someday, but rather some more of that motivational-uplifting-you-can-do-it-stuff.

I'm sorry for your loss, Vig.
Nah, I'll give you first price!
But considering that it was Toastmasters....toastmasters toast in celebrations, you know.

My condolences, @Vigilante. I have lost beloved people too (a relative to cancer), and I know that is no easy avenue to walk down.
Understand that even in the darkness, we will be with you.
My heart goes out to you.
Thank you for reminding us of the importance of providing value and a legacy. It's the most Fastlane /UNSCRIPTED thing, next to the importance of execution.

Even if I don't know you in person I feel sorry for you.
But thank you for sharing this story with us, to remind us of what is really important in life.

Last month my grandpa was in the hospital as well to have a surgery (he's been fighting cancer for several years now). But this time they sent him home for the last time, with the message that they cannot help him anymore and that he most probably will only have one and a half years left to live.
Now this is a message that really wakes you up!
His first reaction to this message was "It's okay, I had a good life. I'm ready to die."

So ask yourself: How would you react?

A work mate of mine HATED his job. He worked more than 90 hours a week on little money just to survive. He was always short of money and it seemed never stopped working.
Two years ago at the young age of 56 he died suddenly of a heart attack on the drive home from work. Poor guy never even made it home that day.
Scared me into changing my whole life I just couldn't face working in the job I hated after that.

So sorry to hear this Vigilante ..my condolences .
Just two days ago one of the most famous film personality in India passed away (Sridevi ). She was just 54 years and very successful . I was in shock on how death spare no one ...... powerful, weak, famous, rich, poor just no one. It is really important to have thought of you being mortal every time when you are making choice .
Remind me of one very good video on Sadguru's success rule (not a fan but point 3 is so important ):

people think that true change happens over times. a little by little

this is true for body building, that kind of process

but decisions are never made over times

this is always an event like this

when you say " enough is enough "

to catch a funeral of a guy that had no idea that morning when he walked out the door that it would be the last time he'd see his wife, his three year old, and his one year old.

As a dad of a 3 year old and a 1 year old, this hits too close to home.

I was thinking about this post all day today.

so what will change in your life ?

most people go to seminars, they listen to the emotional speech ( tony robbins or whoever)

then they go back home and nothing changes

they have just been dancing monkeys ( hooray ! ) on stage for a few hours

people.jpg

most people won't change

that's why most people's lives are forgotten by history.

Had a good friend of Mines wife die today of cancer. It's so horrible things like this happen to such good people and so god dam young 30 years old. There's a fundraiser going for him as he is a new Zealand citizen and alot of the medical costs are not covered in Australia. We are all in this together ladies and gentlemen, try and be as kind as you can to one another. I have never been one to deal with death well I didn't know her well but I shed some tears. Life can be cruel and unforgiving, if there is a God he is a c*nt.
