Market research question...

To make a long story short, I put together a quick survey on Google Forms on video marketing and posted it in a few LinkedIn groups (I won't be stopping there since I plan on doing the same in FB Groups).

It's only been a couple hours but no bites, which I'm sure is common. But if a week passes and I get nothing but "crickets", what could possibly be the issue that would warrant no responses?

Thanks!

Share it exactly as you posted it in the LinkedIn groups, while giving as much
information about what kind of groups they were and why they should care
about video marketing.

Also, did people click on it and didn't finish it or did they completely ignore it?

As of this morning, I had one click so far from LinkedIn. No response recorded so it's hard to tell if someone didn't finish it or ignore it.

Give me your money. [[ No Response ]] Why is no one giving me their money?
Give me your time. [[ No Response ]] Why is no one giving me their time?

Do you perceive any difference between the two?

Vigilante, do you mean why would anyone care about video marketing? Asking for clarification. Thanks.

MJ, I'll probably get this wrong but let me take a stab at this...

If I tell people to give me money, they won't. Why? Because I can't just say "hello" one minute and propose marriage the next.

If I tell people to give me their time and no one responds, then my approach to asking them for their time is off, I suppose.

Makes sense, right?

Nope.
You lack a clear sense of time value.

Jon, it's safe to say that you're right. OK...so where do I go from there?

I know I'm asking ridiculously stupid questions, but I really do appreciate the advice/criticism/etc. thus far.

If you don't do this, how is anyone supposed to answer your question?

Crap...I missed that. Today has been like an unorganized sock drawer...my fault. They were in LinkedIn groups focusing on social media marketing and small business.

Anyway, here's how I posted it:

Hey folks, who here has done video marketing or is considering it? If you "raised your hand", I'd love to hear from you. Below is a quick survey I put together about video marketing for building your brand or business. Even if you do it yourself, it's an awesome power you can have in your corner for brand building. Check it out here: [Omitted Link For Sake Of Demonstration]

Thanks!

Imagine you are online. Some random posts some random survey somewhere. Even here, at the Fast Lane Forum.

Do you CARE? Why would I ever take my time to answer it? Whats in it for ME?

Do you go out on the internet and simply look for random surveys to take?

Of course I don't go on the Internet to look for random surveys.

If I did come across one, then yes, I would ask myself those questions.

Thanks for the clarification.

You are spamming

If I am indeed spamming, then I'm sure it was unintentional. I'm not one of those folks who posts stuff a hundred times a minute, I can assure you.

Updated version:

Hey folks, who here has done video marketing or is considering it? If you "raised your hand", I'd love to get your take on this. I have analyzed all the top social media gurus and brands. These are what I think are the most powerful techniques and tools they use daily to build an engaged audience...

(insert actual work and value)

If you enjoyed this I would love to get your take on what you agree with, disagree with or maybe even something I missed.

I even ask this when someone I've done business with asks me to do a survey.

+1, they already got the money, why would I also give them my time? It doesn't help that it's usually big companies that do it, or tech giants who have it as an automated form.

Here's a bit of a derail:
the other day, I got a message from Facebook on my email account saying that someone was trying to register using my email account. There's a guy who has the same name as I do and I'd gotten the odd message addressed to him in the past, sometimes with sensitive information like job proposals. I always reply politely that there has been a mix up - maybe he doesn't have a dot between his name and surname, I don't know.

Anyway, I thought that since FB is so important to people today, I should let them know that there's a mix up and they have an eager customer who wants to register but can't. I logged in to do only that. After several weeks I got a reply along the lines of: thanks for your message, we're committed to being awesome but we can't always answer everyone, so thanks. Beneath it was a smiley face form allowing me to rate my "experience". I rated it meh. There was, like, no response - I couldn't be mad or happy. It was all utterly pointless. As soon as I clicked it, a text box appeared asking me to describe how they could make the experience better in the future. Well, F*ck you Mark, I'm not filling that.

You're asking someone to give up a piece of their life and demonstrated no reason why they should.

Make it worth their effort.

People don't give up their email addresses unless they expect something in return (a free report, a gift, a chance to win something, learn something explosive, etc.)

The same thing goes for time.

You've essentially focused on what you want (fill out my survey!!) and not why someone should even bother.

I agree, MJ. I should build an email list and nurture it before I even offer something of actual value..

I did read somewhere that in order to put together a great lead magnet, I had to do some kind of research to find a common problem...then provide what I had of value for free in exchange for an email. Somewhere down the line, I must have screwed something up or read it wrong.

This is still missing the point. You will need to offer something of actual value BEFORE people want to give you their email address. It's not different than a survey response; you're still asking for something, only this case it's their email address instead of their time to fill out a survey. MJ gave you a few examples: a free report, gift, etc. that you can use to acquire email addresses or survey responses.

I had to do some kind of research to find a common problem...then provide what I had of value for free in exchange for an email.

Solving a problem = adding value. See examples above.

My advice: stop focusing on you. Start focusing on others.

Why should anyone click on a link you post somewhere? And even if they do out of curiosity, why should they take their time to do some kind of survey?

It may sound hard, but people usually don't care about what you want. What you'd like them to do.
They care about what they want and what they want to do.
They won't ask "what's in for him if I do that now?", they'll ask themselves "what's in for me?"

Read TMF if you haven't yet and you'll get the idea of NEED.
Read How To Win Friends And Influence People to get an idea of how people think.

Look at what people are actually buying. (research point 1)

Then look at why they're buying it. (research point 2)

Then look at what they are not liking about it. (research point 3)

Boom, you've found a demand. Now you just gotta figure out what kind of people are buying that thing, where they are (easy: the answer is Facebook, Google, Amazon, or Instagram 99% of the time), create the offer (the hard part), present it in a valuable way (also the hard part), and then see response (easy: you either get results or you don't).

No results? Scrap it (easy). Results, but not great ones? Tweak it (hard). Great results? Scale it (easy, then hard).

There's your market research. Now why are we bothering with surveys when we can get people to answer with their wallets?
