How I built my own electric dream-guitar (if you can't buy it - build it!)

This post is more on a personal note – but there is sort of a motivational message here... I hope you can enjoy this post and get reminded of the old saying; If you want something in life bad enough - go and get it! Make it happen!

This - is me and my Evil Axe - a guitar I decided to build myself - simply because it didn't exist and I wanted to own one. :)

The Making of an Evil Axe (Watch the Video)

The guitar build was first started in 2007, but delayed several times due to....life. In 2011, the new body was cut after the first one had cracked due to non-dry wood (ugh). Inlay grooves were routed VERY carefully by hand so that the mirror inlay pieces would be flush with the body surface.

Lots and LOTS of sanding and touchups went into the body before it could be primed and painted. The headstock has skull-shaped machine head tuners, and for hardware I also used matching chrome skulls. The pickups are black EMG 81/85s. The Evil Axe has been modified with the 18 volt mod to give your amp that extra kick in the nuts...

About the design
Ever since I my early teens, I was fascinated with rock or metal bands with a great sound, catchy songs, and an attitude. One of the bands that caught my interest early on was the notorious, but very underrated band W.A.S.P.
If you were a kid or teenager in the 80's, and you saw or heard W.A.S.P. for the first time - you were blown away. They were one of the first bands to become both become commercially successful (given frequent MTV-airtime) - while at the same time getting away with releasing their famous F-word hit single AND putting on an outrageous stage show while on tour. They were actually also one of the first metal bands to be banned from showing up in several countries, lol. No one had seen something so shocking since Kiss in the early 70's.

So anyway, Blackie Lawless was (and still is) the brainchild behind W.A.S.P. He not only is a great and much underrated songwriter - but he has probably the greatest voice in the history of heavy metal.

But Blackie's voice wasn't the only incredibly unique thing he had. He also had an insanely awesome looking bass guitar - which can be seen in the videos for Wild Child and Blind in Texas. I had never seen anything like it, and quickly found out that this was a custom piece made for Blackie - and I would NEVER be able to buy one. Not just that, I didn't want a bass guitar. I just wanted a regular guitar that closely resembled his. :)

Some specs for the guitar geeks:

- Norwegian birch wood solid body
- Bolt on, BC Rich Warlock neck w/Widow headstock
- Mirror inlays cut by Jeff at Kamn Guitars
- EMG 81/86 pickups
- Plastikote automotive paint and laquer, Color of Evil (Black #1001)
- Ernie Ball Power Slinky 11-48 strings

Dude, I love it! Aside from the BC Rich necks, which I am not a fan of (not because of aesthetics, but they just feel "slow" compared to my Ibanez"). That is totally sick though, and I have thought about doing something similar, just don't have the time or tools to do such a thing right now. Being a metal/neoclassical player myself, I'd definitely like to give it a good thrashing. :icon_super:

Very cool, I love it when people literally make their dreams

My current business spawned when I made some non existing items for my RC car and people started asking if they could buy them.

Wow, that is amazing!

I'm more of a blues kind of guy so it's not something I'd want for myself, but the craftsmanship of this guitar is mind blowing.

OMFG. That is awesome! I bought a book 2 months ago which is called "make your own electric guitar". I want to make something unique too. Very cool.

Thanks guys.
Yeah this project actually has made me want to make more. Woodworking and guitar building is a really nice hobby if you already enjoy guitars and rock music.

I have a couple of more guitars now on the drawing board that I want to get started on next winter or summer. :)

This must have been ALOT of work. Even after all of the design work you put into it, getting the action and intonation set properly was probably a pain in the a$$!

And I'm also a fan of Satan's People (weren't all 80's teenagers?)

Cool axe!

I've also got this stress relief project on my (messy) desk...

...and because this is an apartment build, everything is made without any power tools.
I'll sign that statement of yours too - if you really want, you can.

Thanks, yes it was a lot of work but I loved every minute of it (well, except for when the wood cracked and I had to start over, lol).

poro78;
Nice job! Looks like one helluva smooth and thin neck-through!

Thanks!
Though it's not a neck-through, the neck is just blended into body quite nicely. ;)

This one is actually going to my friend (I'm actually a lefty, I can't even play this one ), who bought all the woods and parts. We made a deal that he pays the stuff and I'll get some building practice - I'm just a beginner, who made one guitar which was playable and quite ok... well ok enough for my friend to demand I make him one too (and he's a musician). :D
I'm planning to get the body work done in couple of weeks and after that I'll get the body stained and finished and wind some pickups while waiting it to cure.

Do you take custom orders yet?

You're not the first one to ask me that actually. I might at some point make a few upon request but at the moment I'm pretty swamped with other projects. I'll get in touch with you when the time comes. ;)

Yeah, it looks like that because my friend wanted to have better access to those upper frets, now there's no "heel" blocking his hand.

LOVE this. Inspiring man, inspiring

I have a video series in preproduction called "Journey To Epicness" all about this (If you can't buy it - build it). Filling your life with EPIC stuff and learning EPIC skills.

I've always wanted to do more craftsmanship. I love the idea of custom built stuff.
Have you seen Adam Savage's TED on his journey to recreate the Maltese Falcon?

Thanks. And yeah I did see that. There are some whacky guitars out there. I've also seen one that looked like a...well...*ahem* you can probably guess. :) Lol

Old thread, but damn, @Eskil!! You did a killer job on that axe! I loved WASP back in the day. Do you know if Blackie ever saw it?
