The BELIEF that MONEY IS ONLY AN IDEA. And if it is only idea - then I can CREATE any idea I want to create about money, how to bring it into my life, and how to use it to improve the world.

That's sort of like our CFO's favorite quote...Money is Only a Word.

In the company I work for, you are expected to sneak out of work to go watch your kid act in the school play. Money is a by-product of making the machine work smoothly, and happy families make that machine run well.

I am also feeling insecure about speaking about something. Public speaking does not bother me as much as the idea that I would actually be an expert in something...

In any case, these are the topics that I have come up with and would like to know what others attending would prefer:

- Waldorf education (I am the enrollment coordinator for my kids local school and we have been in that community for 5 years)

- How to write a marketing plan (I have worked for some large companies, which made me feel like quite the expert, but now that I am starting my ebiz, I do not feel like an expert)

- 15-minute Spanish lesson (hey this could be about real estate terms...)
- 15-minute French lesson (hey I'm on a roll here:smxA:)

- What I have so far with my online biz that is showing promise but is not in the black.
Let me know. Thanks. :tiphat:

Is it a requirement to have a topic/presentation to attend? I am registered to go but didn't know you had to present something.

BeingChewsie I am not sure if it's a requirement or not. However, I think its only fair to reciprocate. I am looking forward to hearing all the 21+ unique stories that will be presented.

OK, I agree it wouldn't be fair. My boyfriend is going too and he has a presentation on corporations so he will have to fill me in on stuff from Saturday then. I'll ask him to take really good notes. I'm still going to go to PHX with him, it gives me a chance to spend some time with him without my kiddo(a rare treat!!) and I'll join him for dinner at night. So I'll still get to meet everyone. Thank you for taking the time to answer.

BeingChewsie, CactusWren, kwerner, and others:

No one is going to force you to present.

But please, please know that making these presentations is part of what makes this event so beneficial, to everyone.

Seemingly little things that come up, spark ideas and alternate lines of thought in others. Things just build, and really lead to some incredibly cool conversations and brainstorming. It's a true example of synergy-- different parts coming together to create something more powerful (or meaningful) than the separate pieces.

Having been there the past 2 years, it's easy for me to say this. I *know* it b/c I've experienced it.

And I apologize for not having the right words to convey just how amazing this is.

But it is really worth doing. :smx2:

**********

I'd really like you to consider the following:

To make a 10-15 min presentation, each attendee has to:

1. Figure out a topic (much like real life-- you have to choose your path)

2. Research this topic (either you've already done this, or you need to). Again, much like real life: Once we choose a path, we need to learn about it to move forward.

3. Figure out what to cover in 10-15 minutes. Again, like real life: To communicate effectively with others, you need to choose your words and be understood.

(a disclaimer here: I did a HORRIBLE job at #3 at last year's get together-- and NO ONE made me feel bad about this-- in the least. In fact, the only reason I knew was that my wife told me afterwards, and as I replayed things in my head, I realized how screwed up it was. My 15 min presentation dragged on for 90 minutes! Ack! :smx4:).

4. Visual Aids (some folks didn't need these, others did). As in real life, sometimes we can get our message across just by talking. And sometimes, it's a lot easier with handouts, articles, pictures, etc.

5. Be able to answer questions. This is the part that a lot of people are afraid of, and afterwards tell us it was the easiest. While this element does generate the most anxiety (because you don't know what questions will be asked!), it is also some of the BEST preparation/practice you can get for making a future business presentation (say, to a banker, or investors).

In fact, this entire process is GREAT preparation for any time you need to make a small presentation to a group of people.

With one added bonus: The fastlane folks coming to this are a *really* nice bunch. They're not going to make you feel silly, or put you on the spot, or try to look smarter than you by asking complicated questions. Please trust me on this-- in years past, the entire atmosphere has been very cordial, and supportive.

I guess that's my long-winded way of saying, we'd love for you to present something.

Think of this as rapport-building, not giving a talk.

A few important things that need to be said:

1. You don't have to be an "expert" at what you're talking about.

Far from it! As biophase points out, hearing about what a beginner is going through is good for *all* of us-- not only will you be talking about things that most experienced folks forget about, but there may be someone in the audience who can offer up some helpful feedback.

2. Something that seems positively boring to you may be really interesting to all of us.

For instance, I remember BeingChewsie talking about her E-bay store. My wife and I have been getting things together to sell on Craigslist or E-bay-- so this would be incredibly helpful for us (and we'd be picking your brain on this anyway, if you don't present on it!).

I also recall Being Chewsie talking about how she was able to radically re-order her life in a matter of months, changing her work schedule from full time to 24 hours a week. How you did that, and the choices you had to make, would make an *incredible* presentation for all of us. Many of us will be retiring early-- and getting expenses under control is a BIG part of that. You're already doing that!

A few quotes from one of our fastlane forum members:

I have a very strong need to make a difference . . .

. . . I'm just looking for a swift kick in the a$$, I suck at outside the box thinking when its about me. :bgh:

This whole forum is "success training". Look at the incredible things people are doing here! New websites are springing up by people who months ago didn't have any ideas, people are invesing in real estate who never knew they could, people are investing in 70, 80, 100+ unit apartment buildings who have never owned so much as a 3-family or their own home.

The training and mentorship are all around you on this forum.

A good number of wealth building vehicles are represented here.

Figure out where you want to go and then the right vehicle will be become clearer.

The kicker is even once that happens you still have to build the vehicle for yourself...you have to put in the sweat and time..you have to work at it.

I have found I have to work harder and more hours than I do at my rat race job partly do to the learning curve...but I'm looking at the exponential growth that I'll never get from my j-o-b.

Maybe I see it because I have been here for several months. I have seen the things people are doing and doing things myself that I never even gave thought to prior to coming here because it seemed so far outside my reality and comfort zone.

Wow, I could not have put it better myself.

THAT is the reason to come to the GT. And to share in the presenting. :)

Worldwide, depending on the month.
I picked a topic that I am struggling with. Overcoming Obstacles and Fears.

I can apply it to other areas in my life but finances I always get stopped up on.

I'm not willing to let go of the security blanket.

I really want to talk about this because having to speak on a topic and researching it creates greater awareness. Plus, I know others in the room will have discussion and examples to add.

Look at the presentation as a learning experience in self awareness. Believe me, no one will be judging you, just admiring the fact that you:

1. Made the decision to come to the meet up in the first place.
2. Had the intestinal fortitude to stand up and speak.
3. Things in your life that seem boring or trivial are fascinating and intriguing to others.

I'm looking forward to everyones presentations.

Should WildAmbitions and I plan on doing two separate talks- since we are working together on both of our ideas/businesses?

Should WildAmbitions and I plan on doing two separate talks- since we are working together on both of our ideas/businesses?

My answer would be both "It doesn't matter" and "Why not?"

Last year I talked on "Asset Protection and Income Shifting via Multiple Entity Structures."

My son talked on "Lonnie Deals". :hurray:

Now, mind you, we have neither Multiple Entity Structures nor any Lonnie Deals.
But we sounded good...:coolgleamA:

So, if you can both share something you know, all the better.

I'm like many of you who are reticent about presenting. Not because I'm afraid of public speaking, per se. But because I don't know if I have anything of interest to say. Being VERY new to the forum, I barely even know anyone, much less what interests them!!

But being the latest participant to sign up, I'm realizing that I'd better think of SOMETHING to say at Beer & Pancakes. The frustrating part for me is that I don't want to focus on the things I know because I've done them - The Past:
I'M no longer interested in MLM (even though I built a fairly successful 6-figure-income network in my 20s, as a single gal.)
I'M no longer interested in eBay (even though I built, with my husband, one of the largest menswear businesses on eBay at the time.) As a side-business, we also developed our own product and brought it to market during this time. And
I'm not at all interested in what I'm currently doing, software consulting (despite the fact that it's the most profitable of them all), because it isn't easily converted from an "S" to a "B" .
I will probably elaborate on the ebay business, which I mentioned on another thread, but I'm just not sure anyone is really interested.

I guess I'm just being selfish, because I really want to spend my time focused on The Future projects - Real Estate Investment. I guess that will be my "price of admission" to hear the good stuff that I AM interested in!! Well, if anyone has any particular interest around anything I've mentioned, please feel free to ping me.

Jill-

That's part of what makes this event so much fun.

What seems boring to you may be of *great* interest to others.

Fer instance, I've been doing RE rehabs for nearly 20 years.

Helped found a non-profit that now has an annual Expo w/25,000 attendees.

Also started a B&B & Vacation Rental business w/my wife in late 2003.

Generated millions of $$$ (in all areas). For the non profit: Made good $$, but the lion's share went to the non-profit (since we set it up that way).

Happy to share the info.

But I come to these get togethers to get *other* info.

Some things I hope to learn about this year (perhaps at the dinners or sideline conversations):

-Home schooling, esp how to incorporate business oriented lessons
-How to sell stuff on EBay and Craigslist (short term, we're just getting rid of clutter).
-Creative financing, or how to bring on outside investors
-How to radically reduce overhead/living expenses (toying w/the idea of living aboard a cruise ship w/the kids for a year, after we retire)
-Other online business ideas, esp those that require writing skills.

And that's just me.

Lots of other folks coming who will be looking at different things. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Russ. I'm an open book, if I can offer anything to anyone which they will find helpful. I just don't want to drag out the proverbial "family movies" and bore everyone to tears with details of "our last trip".

ooooh . . .

Painful memories.

I come from a family of world travelers.

Fun for my folks was going over to friends' houses and spending *hours* watching slides from Matchu Pitchu. Or Hawaii. Or Fresno.

Didn't matter where.

I just ate the potato chips, curled up in corner, and fell asleep.

LOL. Anyone remember the episode of Family Ties when Alex took little Andy Keaton to his preschool and gave them the lecture on capitalism?? When they told the kids to share, he responded, "What is this? The Karl Marx preschool?!!" LOL.

Note: No response required. This was just a funny little "aside" I thot of when I read that last post.

In the end - I don't think there are really any hard and fast "rules" about who must speak. Do what works for you - but don't be held back from a "growth" experience!

Hubby and I are each willing to speak - but will probably do it as a "team."

We could do a bit longer presentation about self storage - but there are also some other topics the second person could speak about.

What say the attendees?

Additional Possible Topics:

  • Giving Back (Microcredit, etc.)
  • Some of Our "Lessons Learned" (we record these in our Family Business Notebook)
  • Family and Money (our experience in our attempt to balance the quest for financial independence and nurturing our family / kids. I sometimes here people saying things like... sure RK has made it - but he doesn't have kids)
  • How we have structured some of our Zero Down deals - How we Raised the Funds.
  • Anything else that people who have read my story or "know" me might want to hear me talk about! We are open to suggestions.

ATW ~ These all sound great to me.

A couple of other topics I would be interested in hearing about, if someone knows anything about them, would be:
  • Loaning out hard money - especially from a self-directed IRA (or is this the Microcredit to which you referred, ATW?)
  • Real estate Development - building your own Multi-families, to pick up the extra margin (read, "cash flow") Pros and cons?

Microcredit is a way of helping others - works particularly well in 3rd world countries... Small loans to people so that they can start a business. Give a fish verses teach to fish idea.

Real estate Development - building your own Multi-families, to pick up the extra margin (read, "cash flow") Pros and cons?

We will talk about development of self storage - and how this builds equity in the property.
