Hello, my name is Russ from Spokane Washington and I am 26 with a wife and a small baby. I have a business as a specialist videographer/photographer in my city of 500k people. I gross about 150k per year in revenue.
My business is doing pretty good for a relatively small city but I've been seeking a way to serve people online with my skills instead of in person on site. I've had a great idea for years now and last year I read Fastlane and decided to jump right in and develop my online business while running my current video business. Since the majority of my revenue comes from real estate media, I have found a serious headache in this industry and began a journey of trying to solve it.
The business is real estate photo editing services. Most photographers outsource the editing to Vietnam or Philippines and there are many great editors, the issue lies in the fact that these editors are terrible business operators and make the entire process of working with them a nightmare. I decided to hire a team in India to code a platform to organize the photographer/editor relationship from top to bottom with task management, automated billing and solid communication. I have spent about 1 year so far developing this platform and about $16k of my savings.
It's been a huge challenge to do this since there is no blueprint on this sort of stuff, so It was simply trial and error until we finally came up with a functional system. We just launched the site to the public with a minimum viable product and now successfully make about $2k per month in revenue. Not much but it proved to me that I can definitely scale this and there is definitely a market.
I had zero experience with coding and software development but I knew I would hate myself if I never began the process a year ago. Thanks to you MJ, after reading your book I said screw it and just started moving forward and learned as I went.
I'm experimenting with google and fb ads, seo, social media and funny enough, most of my clients come from a fb group for real estate videographers around the globe. The site can be hella buggy sometimes and it's extremely frustrating. I basically want to quit everyday on this damn site but we keep experimenting with new ideas to make the site function as best and smooth as possible for our clients.
If anyone has any experience with software, I would love to hear from you and maybe get some solid feedback on what we have so far. It's called myprophotos.com. You'd have to create an account to see the dashboard and task management system.
Thank you. It's great to finally be on the forum and read other people's stories.
