What questions does a very forward thinker ask that less forward thinkers do not ask?

What questions does Elon Musk ask? How does he approach things differently from not Elon Musks?

Are you referencing "first principle thinking"?

Never heard of this before, but the first paragraph seems spot-on for what's on my mind. I'll take some time to dig through this. Thanks for sharing!

I've been thinking that I might not be as effective in some areas resulting from the questions I ask myself, and the conclusions I come to which are largely based on my personal values/belief systems/principles.

What is your favorite resource for learning to think 10 steps ahead?

What questions does a very forward thinker ask that less forward thinkers do not ask?

What questions does Elon Musk ask? How does he approach things differently from not Elon Musks?

I feel limited by the questions I ask. Like I stay 2 or 3 steps ahead at best. I want new ways to train my brain to think more forwardly. Not some quick-fix solution, but like daily questions or practices to build a new style of thinking into habit.

Any suggestions? Books, podcasts, or anything else are welcome.
This is not a set of questions, but a practice that you review daily. I just started doing this, but I like it so far.

First, print or draw a blank fishbone timeline diagram (looks like the one linked here):

Then, put a task on each small vertical line (your next task for the project is on the far left, and the future tasks are on the right).

If you can, put a date (or at least a general timeframe) for each task. This forces you to plan ahead and think more strategically (and to be more stingy with your time, which I am trying to do).

There are two approaches you can use with this method to think ahead more strategically for a project.

Approach 1: When You Know The End Goal
Write out the end goal at the far right side of the diagram. Then, work backwards, adding the steps you will take to get there.

Keep going until you are back to the present (and now you know the next step to take, and the next one after that, ... etc.).

Modify as needed if things change. Why did you need to make the change? How could it have been avoided?

Approach 2: When You Are Not Sure Of The End Goal
Write out the next 2 or 3 steps you have planned. Then, think about what could come after that. What makes the most sense?

Sometimes, you might have to go back and add/remove/reorder tasks. When you finish a task, cross it off and add another at the end. It might be good to limit yourself to 5 to 10 at first, and then build up to more as your strategic thinking improves.

I like to do a separate diagram for each project or goal of mine (e.g. one for health, one for business, one for investing, etc.) I like the visual aspect of it, and the fact that you can modify it as you get better at planning.

"Try to be useful. It is hard to be useful, very hard. To contribute more than you consume. Not to try to be a leader for the sake of being a leader. A lot of the time leaders are the people who don't want to be leaders. If you live a useful life, it's a good life."

It is hard to beat what Elon said there, it's as raw as it gets. Love it. Thanks for sharing.

Play chess. More than that; don't just play. Learn the strategy, get deeply involved in all the glorious possibilities.
Any resources or suggestions on where and how to learn?

I’ve been playing on my phone the chess.com app is great but I have no idea what I’m doing or where to even start on learning to improve.

Things I think about (in no particular order):

1) Is it really true? (e.g. Do we really NEED a website?)

2) Has someone somewhere done it without X?

3) What would we do if we weren’t allowed X? (e.g. How would you get new business without a website?)

4) Start as close to the end as possible.

5) Dump it, defer it, delegate it, do it. (The most important is dumping it.)

6) Is this something you can’t NOT do?

7) What would Richard Branson do?

8) What’s The ONE Thing that if completed would make everything else redundant or easier to do?

The website smartfares lost me as a customer today.

I want to purchase a plane ticket and it was $100 cheaper on smartfares. While going through the checkout process I was hit with so many upsells that I eventually exited and bought the plane ticket for $100 more on another site.

What got me was the part where I was supposed to select my seat. Look at the shady text above it. By choosing items 1-3 you get charged $20 and you don't even get the seat guaranteed. And then you have to pay for customer support?

2.png

These are the other upsells that I declined.

At this point it just felt like a shakedown and I just exited and went straight to the airline site where I paid $100 more, but I also got to pick my seat and had better peace of mind.

Do you have to go to the gym to train legs ? Can it be done with calistenics ? I dislike the TV plus Mirrors ambient of most gyms, and rather exercise in a park in nature. My legs are ok but I would prefer to haven them really strong. Any advice?

What a shit way to run a business. Bait and switch.

My wife and I were buying tickets a month ago and to avoid BS inflexibility, just went to the LH airlines (international flight) and paid full pop. Screw it, peace of mind was worth it.

I just bring up some points that I read from elsewhere.

I think you are referral to strategic plays rather than tactical plays.

Strategies are based on facts and research and micro-observations that you believe are correct. From all these facts and details you craft strategies that best suit to your goal and circumstances.

If the micros are wrong the macro will be screwed up too.

That’s why you can have two smart people who totally disagree on the strategy.

The most familiar strategy is the “lean start up approach to business”.

Assumptions
-Most ideas will fail
-most ideas fail because they are not market tested
-More companies and business go bust because they over-invest time and money in ideas they think can work but have no market feedback

Strategic adjustment
-develop low cost prototype to gather feedback
-Discard ideas with bad market feedback based on the mvp
-Double down investment when feedback is good.

In short avoid financial destruction before you hit your home run.

This is just one example on how to derive your own strategic insight.

A few years later after the birth of the idea of lean start up, Xiao Mi founder expanded on the strategy into a 2.0 version.

“Since start-up is a constant trial and error process, the only thing that matters is speed.

The faster you do things, fail things and restart, the higher chance you are going to make it sooner.”

On My First Million they were talking about a website that you go on and message a real person, tell them what you want, they do all the research for you and send a bunch of option, and if you buy one, you pay them a $50 fee.

A much more customer focused business model than affiliate links and insurance upsells.

It sounded amazing, one guy had an issue with a flight they booked for him being cancelled and got onto them and they rang the airline, found new flights and sorted everything for him.

I can't believe how good the guy playing Jaskier is and how incredible the production value is.

Stuff like that couldn't exist 10-20 years ago. These days, with the exploding creator economy, there will be more and more stuff like this. These are independent creators who will soon match TV-level quality of production, if they aren't already at this level.

Yep, I've been thinking the same. That's why I posted this INE:

Have only missed a handful of races in 20 years. Super rare to find people interested outside of the Autosport forum though.

@Fox I watch every practice session, qualifying, and full-length race. I also do a lot of sim racing and frequently go karting.

You probably won't find a whole lot of people interested in F1 though, especially since the majority of the members of the forum are based in the U.S. and there are currently no American F1 drivers for them to cheer for.

"mental health" is sad, fake, and gay

it was made up by pharma companies to sell you pills

ignore your feelings, get results, then you'll notice that you have the feelings that you want (then repeat)

I had to read this twice to make sure it isn't satire.

You're either completely oblivious to what true psychological suffering is really like OR you've suffered extensively yourself and are trying to cope by having the most absurd take on mental health I've ever read.

Instead of ignoring your feelings - accept and acknowledge them, and then make a conscious decision on whether you're going to allow them to affect you or not.

In the end, emotions and mental disorders are "just" chemicals in your brain going haywire. These chemicals can be brought back into a state of equilibrium naturally i.e without the use of drugs.

Whether that's done through getting more sunlight, improving your sleeping schedule, working out, deep introspection, or experiencing some sort of perceived spiritual ascension, the end result remains the same -a happier brain.

But for some, this may still not work. And for them, the risk of not taking pills outweighs the risks of taking them.

In any case, black and white thinking + unripe machismo will not do anyone any good so I suggest you rethink your stance on this.

It's not unmanly to suffer mentally. It's unmanly to not do anything about it when it's taking control of your life and affecting those around you.

Don’t take him too seriously. He’s just a dude at the gym grunting about “gay” and “health” and probably a little “mental”, who the hell knows?

The truth lies in the middle ground between you both.

Things swing too far one way and then they end up too far the other way.

I feel like everything in society right now is swinging way too hard and ending up way too far on each side.

I know way too many people taking pills because they are “depressed” or have “anxiety” but their problems would be solved by exactly what you suggested. Getting up, eating right, hitting the gym, kicking goals and looking after yourself. Turning social media off and deleting dating apps. A bit of meditation. Any one of those things would probably be enough.

Instead these people are taking pills pushed by pharma companies.

That’s not to say depression and anxiety can’t be very real and some people do need pills but there’s definitely some truth to the statement that the majority of “depression” and “anxiety” is some trendy virtue signal pushed by pharma companies and the woke agenda to weaken and feminise men.

You can understand why someone would make a statement dismissing all mental health issues when so many of them are bullshit or self inflicted and easily fixed.

Any resources or suggestions on where and how to learn?

I’ve been playing on my phone the chess.com app is great but I have no idea what I’m doing or where to even start on learning to improve.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Started learning at chess.com or some other app a couple of times. For a while, I learned a lesson each day. Maybe I should get back into that. After watching Queen's Gambit, I thought I would be an expert. For some reason, it didn't turn out that way. :D
