Dan Pena's intention with the contract was to set up a huge stream of cash flow.
He directed about 50 million dollars in and out of a bank account in a single year.
He wasn't concerned with the 90 000 profit as much as with the effect that the cash flow had on the bank's willingness to provide him with loans and to treat him as a valuable client in general.
Banks are more concerned about your cash flow than about your profit.
Directing dozens of millions into your bank account means that the bank can lend a multiple of that to their customers and charge interest on the whole amount.
Customers like that are a banker's wet dream.
In later years he used his reputation with the banks to finance his acquisitions.
